RetroforceGO! recording episode 28 tonight: celebrating 20 years of Mega Man photo

In the year 200X, a super robot named Retroforce was created. Dr. Dyson created Retroforce in order to preserve the memories of a time when Mega Man didn't suck. Tonight, this super robot springs into action once again, with a special episode to usher in the 20th anniversary of the franchise.

Back before Capcom started producing 17 Mega Man games a week, the series was one of our favorites. It was full of awesome enemy characters, clever level design, and badass music that still rivals some modern-day chiptune. It was also tough as hell, and that's always worth some points on the RFGO scoreboard.

We know you guys remember the little blue bomber from before his games had "Alpha hyper ultra drive XX super Z" bolted onto their titles, so hit the comments to tell us about your favorites and leave us your questions for the show. PEW! PEW! PEW!

Protip: I have never played a Mega-Man game. Go figure.

Mega Man 2 for sure. Perfect difficulty (for me), so fun, so good music and so interesting graphics. Also the last game before bosses became weird, hehe.

Though Mega Man X was great too for all the same reasons.

Looking forward to the show!

Megaman 2 blew my mind as a child. I haven't been the same since; it's like barney on the simpsons after his first sip of beer.

Question for you guys which is better, Classic Megaman or Mega Man X?

Also do you think the alleged announcement could be a 2d Megaman game?

Neither have I, Casualweaponry.

Anyway, this is a question for the fellas (and lass); which Megaman would you say to be best, and which one would you recommend to start with (for example, in order to apprecriate the Megaman that was the best, or one that didn't get enough love (but you thought needed more attention).

Since I haven't played a Mega-Man game before, this is your chance to really make a difference in a gamer's life.

The music that plays on Crash Man's stage is hands down the best video game music I've ever heard

The weird thing is, I'm like 32 years old. I grew up during the NES era and still managed to miss it.

However, the way Capcom has been spitting out Mega Man games, why should there be a special countdown for one? I think we may be seeing a Capcom announcement of Mega Man in Smash Bros. But I'd always thought we would see a character like Ryu or Chun Li in Smash Bros. though.

My roommate's a Mega Man fanatic and has played (and beaten) all but a few. I myself have only played so many (beaten very few to the end) and so far I really liked Mega Man 2 (of course) as well as Mega Man X and X2 though my roommate prefers X3 (which I've yet to play).

As for questions, I have 3:
Q1: Do you guys think the Gameboy Mega Man Collection will ever see the light of day?
Q2: What's up with all the Man's? Why isn't there any women robot masters or at least a severe lack of? I'd be willing to bet you could make a woman robot just as tough as some of the others. (Besides the Zero or EXE series)
Q3: Besides the first three Mega Man X's, what do you make of the X series? Do you think it's going downhill, etc? (I had no problem with X4 though my roommate doesn't seem to like it much.)

Queston(s) fo you guys(4 I think).

Do you think we'll ever see...
1-A concrete bridge(in game form mind you) between the storyline of the Original series and the X series?
2-How about the X series and Zero Series?
3-Any series and Legends series?
4-Capcom of America ever refer to Megaman as Rockman?
(okay, that last one wath a joke one)

Hey, look at me asking questions you probably already planned on covering in the show.

What boss do you guys think is the most awesome? And which one was the lamest?

To me, Bubble Man was Yaris-level lameness. I mean honestly...bubbles? I've never seen bubbles and thought "Oh shit, I better avoid those or I'll get hurt"

And I always thought Cutsman was the best, way before HORSE the band made a song about his awesomeness.

Also since I know how much the Retoforce crew loves Mario paint theres a slew of Mario paint music maker playing nearly every classic mega man song as well as older classic such as FF tunes.

I look forward to the show, Topher and Co.

And as a guy whose played every Mega Man game in the order they were released, I can say that Mega Man 2 is still my favorite. Some folks make a convincing argument that Mega Man 3 is actually the best out of the NES games, because it has the most levels, it's the longest, and it has the dog. But the series' creator, Keiji Inafune himself says he sort of thinks Mega Man 3 could have been better.

I whole heartedly agree with him. MM3 has it all on paper, but the follow through just lacks "heart".

But as for the question as to which Mega Man game is the best, that may not be something that has a universal answer. It's like asking "Which Harrison Ford movie is the best?" Though it's a fair question, it's just too subjective to answer.

But I can say that Mega Man X7 may be inarguably be the least well liked game in the series. That or the later Battle Network games, which are practically synonymous with the term "milking the franchise".

Sigh, this reminds me of last week when I was going to say that I hadn't gotten the chance to play any of the original or X series of Mega Man games.(Comment system failed me)

Thank you guys for mentioning me two weeks ago in the thanksgiving-esque episode. The only real thing I have to say is that even though I haven't played most of the games (only exception is Mega Man and Bass for the GBA) the music is great. I mean I've known the "enter the stage" theme for as long as I can remember. And who can forget Dr. Wily's Stage in Mega Man 2? That's some classic stuff.

I'm debating picking up the anniversary collection and the X collection, and if I ever get a PSP, I'd probably pick up Powered Up and Maverick Hunter and NOTemulate the other games on it.

I don't like megaman. I've played all of the NES megaman games (except 6 which wasn't released in the UK) and I didn't enjoy any of them, they all felt like a bad combination of Mario and contra.
I recently tried playing one of the ridiculously titled PSP games and I found it to be worse than the 8-bit travesty's.

Also, I have a 2-part question: What makes megaman deserving of any extra special recognition and why do I not like any of the megaman games?
Cataract's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/16/2007 16:38

Oh fuck yes Megaman!!! I totally forgive you guys!

Big question coming up...

Anyway, how do you guys feel about the transition of megaman gameplay? It started out with classic megaman (Simple side-scrolling: 1-6), went to an improved system (Same general idea, with minor improvements: X series, for the most part), then to the craptastic Battle Network. In the past year (?) it went back to ZX, which seemed to be more of a return to the X series, which was good.

On to my actual question...

Do you think/hope that Inafune is going to continue to develop more of the old-school style of Megaman games, or do you think that with the release of the Star Force trio, do you think that Ifanune is going to continue to go for the battle network feel?

On the whole topic of favorite MM game (my dumb ass just saw "Megaman" and "PEW PEW PEW", and I went nuts), I can't say MM2. Personally, I think the only two reasons that it has such amazing praise is because of the music, which is understandable, but also because it was the only classic megaman game to feature two different difficulty levels: Easy and Normal. Considering that the classic Megaman games aren't considered easy, this allowed more people to embrace the series due to an easier difficulty while still featuring the same gameplay as the harder difficulties, as some games were noted for not allowing the player to see the ending unless they were playing on the hardest difficulty available. I think for these two reasons, and because Crash Man is a badass, are the only reasons that so many people take such a liking to MM2.

Personally, my favorite Megaman game would probably be Megaman 3. Megaman 3 had some of the most amazing level design in any classic MM game, and including the robots in the Wily stages that were supposedly built from the scraps of the bosses from Megaman 2 was great, and I actually hoped to see it in the next few games. I think that Inafune used MM3 to grow and see how he could expand the series more than any other game, but he seemed to stick to the winning formula of MM2 and continued to expnd from there, similar to what he's doing with the Battle Network series.

DR Mexico doesn't like puppies, rainbows, dolphins or anything else wonderful in the world :P

I'm just kidding. I don't know why you don't like Mega Man. To each his own.

I LOVED Mega Man back in the day. Mega Man 3 is actually my favorite followed by 2 being a close second. 3 edges out for me because of the story elements, which I really liked. I also found 3 to be much more challenging than 2. Of course like everyone else, I got bored with the series when Capcom whored it out. I liked the first few X games, I liked the first Battle Network game. Then when I realized every sequel was the same, I got bored.

When they released Mega Man Powered Up for the PSP I was really happy. I wished they would do Powered Up 2 and 3. Don't you? I don't even care what system: Wii, 360, PSP, DS, Capcom, just fuckin make them! If they came out exclusive on the PS3, that would be a system seller for me. For serials.

Seriously though, what went wrong with Mega Man? It couldn't be JUST the millions of games could it? Did Mega Man sometime lose his way?

This is hard for me, because my fiancee is a SUPER DUPER Mega Man Fanboy (except he hated the Battle Network series and their descendants) and he even realizes Mega Man is only a shell of what he was.

I have a question that I bet he'll like me to ask you though: Do you think we'll ever see a Mega Man game that completely connects the original Mega Man Series to the X Series (since Dr. Light made X)? My fiancee always felt that should be Mega Man 9 (then X could essentially be Mega Man 10! Perfect!). However would people actually want that? Has that ship sailed?

Mega Man and Sonic are the two characters that I loved back in the day and are shells of their formal selves now. They both make me sad.

The Mega Man games are definitely NES classics, but I think even the Retroforce team can admit, despite the enormous retrogoggles, its biggest flaw. For such an advanced android, why can't Mega Man duck? Dr. Light must have been a real genius to install locked legs on his greatest creation. Also, don't you guys think that 6 games on the NES was a little long, especially considering that most of them were more or less the same thing?

I have some strange feelings with Megaman. I love plattforming games as much as everyone in Retroforce, and in that case, Megaman Games are truly clever Plattforming games (specially the 8 bit ones). But I can dig the series too much because of the DAMN BOSSES.

I HATE THEM.

Maybe is because I suck too much or something, but it's just not fair that after all that gretaness of music, and stages and jumps, it comes a bad ass boss just to destroy your life.

But maybe I'm losing the whole point of Megaman here.

WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS OF MEGAMAN BOSSES? Are they just part of the experience? Have they made any difference?

Two questions:
1. If you played X8, what did you think?
2. Do you consider the different classic, X (and so on) Mega Man series' hero as different and really care or do you just consider them all "Mega Man, end story"?

For me;
1. I was surprised over how good it was, really handled going 3D well by not doing (almost) anything but the actual graphics 3D. Still the good old sidescrolling and everything felt familiar. Some okay music too if I remember correctly.
2. I consider them all the same. As far as I'm concerned, all the "classic" Mega Man games and all the Mega Man X games have exactly the same hero, and the same goes for all others (granted I haven't played all the battle network etc). I know they really aren't technically, but it feels way better to believe that "Mega Man" is just the one and same hero.
