RetroforceGO! recording episode 27 tonight: The pristine glory of the SNES photo

As our own Mr. Destructoid has said countless times before, "BEST. SYSTEM. EVAR!!" Tonight we take a look back at one of the most solid gaming platforms ever known to mankind. Sure, it had a few stinkers in its library, but for the most part it was an outstanding console, and remains so to this day.

The games were classic, the region locking was a cinch to get around, and the Japanese Super Famicom controller is still the only one in existence that I've got nothing bad to say about. Best system ever? Regardless of whether that question can ever be answered, many gamers (including some members of the RFGO! cast,) still hail it as their all-time favorite.

And you? We know you've got a favorite SNES game, and probably a few that you cringe at the mere mention of. Accessories? You know it. Hit the comments and tell us all about your Super Scope, mouse, Super Game Boy, and all your purple-est SNES memories.

TMNT Turtles in Time was one of my favorite games, and the second one i got for the system. The sound bytes and graphics were perfect

I cried when my father made me sell my SNES (and original fat GameBoy) when we first opened the videogame store.

But yeah, the SNES was one of best systems ever created. The controller felt right, the crazy amount of games that spanned every gaming category, I can go on and on.

FLAWLESS VICTORY!

The SNES was a juggernaut of awesome; It has one of the best libraries of all consoles and it was 2D. Chrono Trigger, Cybernator, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Ogre Battle, the Street Fighter games, Yoshi's Island and my all-time favorite game, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Life was really good back then.

And Super Gameboy was the absolute best peripheral.

My love for the SNES knows no bounds. I just wish someone would make an optical mouse for it -- playing the fly game in Mario Paint would be so much better.

Ah the SNES, first console i owned back in the day, the first thing i think about is how many god damn batteries that super scope ate.
But after moving passed the mountain of AA's it has to be said that super R-Type was the greatest game crafted by the hands of man.

one time my dad and older brother got into a huge argument while playing super soccer because my brother picked Brazil and my dad picked the US. My dad lost and said things like "HOW DARE YOU GO AGAINST YOUR COUNTRY!!." He was serious.

man those were the days.

Man, both me ad my grandmother play the hell out of the Super we got for my 3rd or 4th birthday, it still semi works (as in graphical glitches and crashing), but we got another from a friend and right now we can't play it because out neighbor borrowed the cords and our Mario World.

Countless hours sapped by Zombies ate my neighbors (yeah, it was SneS AND Gen, but the SNES was both the better version AND a seminal game ANYWAY), Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Spanky's Quest, Goof Troop (there were a few good Licenced games too!), Tetris Attack, Arkanoid: Doh it Again, Mario Paint, Pocky & ROcky, Yoshi's Cookie (yeah, I said Yoshi's Cookie, wanna make somethin of it?) Donkey Kong Country 1-3, etc. Heck I'm even still buying games for it (link to the past, Earthbound, etc.)..

Too much awesome for one console, but somehow it kept it all there. And you know what helped? the fact that it had a great rival in sega. I know, I know, Blah blah blah fanboyism, but i'll be damned if they both didn't have awesome libraries, and when it was all said and done no matter if you were Nintendo or Sega you won. And the reason for that is because they both had outstanding lifetimes. However, when looked back upon, you canot deny the SNES was the winner, the better system, and the king. But give a little credit to SEGA to hang in there like it did and keep it awesome the whole way through.

The SNES is still the only console my mother will play. In fact, she's probably played more hours of Dr. Mario/Tetris than I did on every other game I owned for the SNES.

First game I ever played = Super Mario World
First game I ever played through = Turtles in Time
I kind of have a thing for my SNES. Chrono Trigger + Earthbound + E.V.O.: Search For Eden + Super Mario World + Yoshi's Island + Donkey Kong Country series + Link to the Past = GREATEST. SYSTEM. EVER.

I wanna know what your most addictive SNES game is?

For me it was Uniracers. Wasn't the best game on the system, but i could not stop playing it... Also Tetris Attack FTW

I guess I’ll just have to wait for the Sega Genesis episode; I never had an SNES. I certainly played it plenty of times, of course — many of my friends had the console (in fact, I have a friend at college right now who lives one floor down, and he has one with Super Mario Land, Super Mario Kart, Super Street Fighter II, and a few other games). Man, I remember being so confused at first because there were four face buttons when I was used to the NES and its A & B buttons. And whoa...shoulder buttons?! A great controller, indeed...I never liked how the Genesis controller fit in my hands when compared to the SNES pad. My favorite controller would still have to go to the DualShock 2 (not the upcoming third one, of course; I don’t like those trigger-like-but-not-quite-there R2 and L2 buttons). It’s the most ergonomic one of them all, and all the buttons are accessible (as far as I’m concerned, the 360 controller makes your index fingers rest on the triggers, so you have to move them up significantly to get to the bumpers). Just my opinion, of course.

@AgentMOO: OMG Turtles in Time!!!

@Hamza: Wow. My nerd scale is off the charts. You are awesome.

By the way, Toph, thanks for the shout-out on last week’s episode...it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

That system brings back so many great memories for me! I had the mario paint set with the mouse.

My favorite game back in the day was defiantly Super Street Fighter II, with Super Mario world a close second. Killer Instinct was a favorite as well, plus it came with a soundtrack!

I also remember playing some interesting games as well, Stunt Racer FX was a fun one, and also Uniracers!

Oh wow I also have great memories of playing NCAA Basketball with my Dad, and being amazed with the graphics and the 3 count them 3 types of dunks you could use!!

Now Super Metroid is my game of choice when I want to play some SNES.

Overall the SNES brings back memories of some of the happiest years of my youth!!

Oh god I almost forgot Super Mario Kart, I used to whoop ass in that game!

I didn't own one until I was 19. I know, blasphemy, right? It gets worse -- I had a Genesis. Ouch. But still, I love this system. I played it for countless hours at friend's houses etc.

I know you'll all answer the most basic questions, favorite games, favorite moments, favorite accessory, etc. So I suppose I'll offer up a more random question that still remains on topic:

Comparing the length of games of the SNES generation and the games of today, what do you think about the size difference? Should we get more out of games today, or did games of the past perhaps offer more replay-ability that is lost today? How has the capacity differences cartridge to DVD affected the gamer?

Oh wow I just remembered so much more! The Super Game Boy was wonderful!

Anyone remember the cleaning cartridge?? It was that darker grey catridge that looked like a game but wasnt a game, it just cleaned it. It made absolutely no sense to me at the time, as blowing into the game as well as the system was the superior cleaning method. I wish I could find one of those cleaning carts now!

That US SNES sure is an ugly beast compared to the European version.

What an amazing console - the best control pad ever, Mario games that were good, Mods 7 awesomeness and an amazing library of titles.

Shame Nintendo don't make consoles for gamers anymore.

Playing the Illusion of Gaia is my favorite SNES memory, as that was the first game to evoke any kind of emotional response from me.

Hamlet jumps into the fire to save everyone else!

Also, playing SF 2 at home was pretty incredible.

I, too, was a Genesis kid. You won't find me saying anything bad about the Genesis -- I loved every minute I had with it -- but I do wish I'd been able to play the SNES more than I did.

I've used my computer's imagination to play a few of the SNES greats like Chrono Trigger, but it's not the same. I should have been there....

Oh yeah, my question. I’m not asking your opinion here; I actually don’t know why this is, so I’m wondering if the four of you can offer any insight.

What was the deal with multi-platform games in the 16-bit era? Like, people above have mentioned that Zombies Ate My Neighbors, for example, was better on the SNES. And Disney’s Aladdin on the SNES and Genesis were pretty much two different games altogether. Was it the same thing as the new-gen systems (i.e., developers knew one console better than the other, or one was easier to program for than the other?) Was it because of release dates, or maybe different demands/requirements from Sega and Nintendo, respectively, or something else? Any ideas?

Good to see some Earthbound love in here. Earthbound is my most favourite game ever on any console in the known universe. It's about the only game I know inside-out and backwards, and it's the only game I've beaten more than 20 times. It's such an incredible game on an incredible system.

Mode7 was the fucking SHIT! Nobody really knew what it did (other than make things spin around and look like a half-downloaded de-interlaced GIF file), but it was awesome! And the FX Chip? Oh, that laid the smackdown on Blast Processing right fuckin' quick, didn't it?

So many great games, a control pad that was damn-near perfect, and hours upon hours of fun make it the best system ever released in the history of forever.

I love my SNES.

Super Mario World was one of the best gaming experiences ever. Then there's was Tetris Attack in 1996, my favorite game concept ever. I have spent countless hours on all tetris attack style games. Oh then there's Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, and of course Earthbound. Oh and Chuckrock. Bubsy! ZELDA!!! Oh I love all things Super Nintendo... Megaman X is my favorite non-nintendo game that I played back in the day (didn't play Earthbound or Chrono Trigger back in the day and still haven't played them (I know I am lame but I need to find a new SNES because I sold mine)) Any suggestions on where to get one? Nintendo doesn't make consoles for gamers? Would you please stop talkin' shit? IMO Nintendo is one of the few companies who know what gaming really is about (the other ones being Rare, Retro Studios, Vanillaware and Treasure) and some of their late games feel so retro it almost makes your brain explode.

My favorite SNES game is, without a doubt, Terranigma. It was also the last game I played on a SNES before my brother sold the system with all of his games. But it was in my opinion a masterpiece.
The graphics were nice, the music was awesome and the action-oriented RPG gameplay was almost like Secret of Mana but with less weapons to choose from (only a spear) and much faster. I remember the different combos you could do with the spear.
And even though the story becomes a bit weak when you reach the ending, overall it was awesome. But my favorite part of the game was the option to evolve the different towns of the game.
It's sad that the game was (as far as I know) never released in the US. But when it is available on Virtual Console: Download it. I heartly recommend this game.
