RetroforceGO! episode 93: Final Fantasy IV (and vaginas!) photo

Happy Friday, listeners. There was a bit of trouble getting the show uploaded this week, but thanks to the vigilance of Geraldo Beedog, all has turned out well. Thank you, sir. This week we were joined by one of our very favorite listeners, Naia-the-gamer, as we discussed Final Fantasy IV. That's Final Fantasy II if you played it on the SNES, because Square's favorite thing to do is confuse us with its haphazard numbering protocol.

Subject matter aside, this week's episode is special because it features lots of girls. You won't find that over at Podtoid. No sir. I'm talking about vaginas, folks -- as I often like to do -- and we're surrounded by 'em this week. So many in fact, that today's header image is crafted by our own Stella Wong, circa 1992. Lovely, isn't it? This week's girly highlights include:

  • Vaginas everywhere!
  • The Dragoon jump. 'Nuff said.
  • Spoilers. We've got 'em.
  • A big party is a happy party.
  • Chad demands ice cream.
You can check out the new episode right here, or subscribe to us on iTunes to get the show as early as possible. That is, unless you're some kind of cheauvanist pig who doesn't like girls.

How can ya'll beat the first episode in 5 hours? It took me almost 12 hours with all the grinding. Now, Rydia's tale on the other hand took me just over 5 hours, and that was even with my manic grinding. That was disappointing.

I know you guys only did it as an aside, but one of my pet peeves with this game is that everybody on the internet, particularly on certain OTHER podcasts (cough*1Up*cough) seem to think that, unless we clarify that Final Fantasy IV was once released as Final Fantasy II eighteen years ago, people across the nation will be utterly confused and incapable of discerning which game you're talking about.

Square's done a magnificent job of re-introducing the correct numbering sequence. Anyone who needs to know which games is which already knows. It's been eighteen years, and the game has been re-released three times since then. The only people who don't know are people who don't play Final Fantasy.

If anything, we should be making the clarification whenever we talk about the Super Nintendo versions, because those are the ones that are wrong. Otherwise, let's just use the titles for the games with which they are intended to correspond and not use parenthetical names for games that already have the correct title. Let's just say Final Fantasy II when we mean the one with Firion, and Final Fantasy IV when we mean the one with Cecil.

And the same rule should apply to Final Fantasy III and VI.

I'm going to be really annoyed in twenty years, after this game has been re-released a half dozen more times, if we're still having to clarify the titles based on the Super Nintendo versions.

@TVs Mr Neil

Keep preaching the good word, brother.

I, too, have been slightly irritated that many bloggers/reviewers think only they have a real grasp that the numbering system was narfed two decades ago and it's up to them to make sure we plebeians understand it.

*gets to name banter*
I actually wholly associate the numbers (visually as the Roman numerals) with their game. Even just the sound of the numbers 'match' to the games to me. Heck, I usually just forego "FINAL FANTASY" or "Eff Eff". Also, it took a bit to get used to saying "SehSihl" (still goin' "Reedeeah" over something closer to "Riddeeah"), though just a weekish ago I said that around my folks and they're all like "'Seesihl'?". *sigh*

Not sure if it's this one that goes into it most, but it's another crap-happened-but-games-helped story.

Prolly like Rydia most, but I've sided onto Porom (mostly on the GFAQs boards). As for Baigan (romaji shows it's "beigan", so it's like "bacon"), playing FFIV ADVANCE kinda negates that surprise, since they don't have character portraits. *goes back to listening; on the female roles thing (cue PaladinCecil's defense of Rosa)*

It says II and III respectively on the carts that I own. That I bought in America. Back before most gamers my age even knew that the numbers were wrong. Technically, I have never played FF IV or VI, since I have never re-bought the ones that have been re-released, and the only time I ever play these games are in their original US SNES form.

So don't front like it's some big deal, because 80% of the US gaming public didn't even know that the numbers were off until they announced that VII would resume the correct numbering pattern. Saying FF II for the SNES is just as valid a statement as saying FF IV for the Super Famicom.

So I listened to the whole episode and loved every second of it. The closing music started to play and I thought to myself "Oh WTF, how did they not mention the damn Spoon? That's my favorite thing ever"

As the closing music progressed, it was then my friends, that Mr Topher Cantler saved the day.

Also Naia, I will gush at you when I see you tonight about how amazing you were. :D

@zero atma - haha, I hear ya. However, I could have gotten through the episodes as quick as the quickest. I just can't do that and keep a true RPGer conscience :P

Final Fantasy, for me, is all about grinding. I remember playing Final Fantasy III (using the US naming convention) on the SNES as a wee lad, and leveling up my characters, getting them to level max level of 99 for hours fighting those goddamn dinosaurs over and over and over again.

Great episode, my second favorite so far (really, really loved that Earthbound one). Naia was a great guest. I just wish Topher wasn't MIA for most of the discussion. Ah well.

I'm actually going to be playing through FFIV Advance soon, since I missed it when it first came out. Yes, I love the DS version and really need to get around to beating that a couple more times, but I want to do all the bonus stuff in the GBA one too. Anyways, this was a great way to get me pumped for playing it again.
