RetroforceGO! Episode 87: Earthbound with Aaron Linde photo

Happy Friday, listeners! This week, Chad and Stella both make their welcome return to the show, and are joined by none other than Aaron Linde of Real Men Play Gradius fame. He used to write for the site, you know. And he was goddamned good at it. Other things that are goddamned good include Earthbound, green tea frozen yogurt, and possibly this episode of RFGO, whose highlights include:

  • Tower Tower Tower
  • LINDEH
  • Duke Togo face
  • Jesus Christ, it's an antlion, get in the car
  • Rape and abortion!
  • Dear Nintendo of America: YOU SUCK
  • No, really, there's an antlion. You should probably run
  • Aaron wreaks havoc on the set of Jeopardy
It was a good episode. A long episode. An episode you can get on iTunes, or right over here. Enjoy, and we'll catch you next week.

I still think it would have been funny if you guys just didn't ever do an Earthbound episode.

I find it interesting that Linde is quick to spoil any game on Podtoid, but restrained himself for Earthbound. Just sayin'

Great show though, I should get around to these games sometime

This is definitely one of my favorite Retroforce podcasts ever!

Thanks for discussing my question, and Chad, as far as I see it, you are Rip Taylor. Much love!

Cataract, the Rip Taylor voice makes a glorious return?! Fuck this, I'm leaving work early to listen.

I just checked out Linde's article for the first time, and that was a fucking excellent read.

How spoilerific is this episode? I haven't played Earthbound, but I'm looking. I may even hit up that fancy new trading thread Dyson started. I may just listen to the first half of this episode for now...

@IsayIsay: Yep! I'm uneven when it comes to my spoiler considerations. Alex is in the process of playing a game. But if it's two years outside of a game's release and you don't own it nor have any intentions on picking it up and you don't plan on ever actually getting to playing a game but you're still like HEY SPOILERS WUT then balls to you, skip forward.

@ Linde

I have no qualms with spoilers. I'd say every game I have on my queue still to play has been spoiled for me in one way or another, but I'm still going to play them regardless. It's just becoming clearer and clearer that you hate Samit is all.

I can't listen to this yet; haven't even started Earthbound so far. I'm a european, y'know and I just started Mother 3. when I'm done with that and the whole pile of games that I have unfinished I'll get to it.

We touched a few points near the end but nothing to go into super detail. We were trying not to spoil it for Dyson but I there was a lot of good points covered about Earthbound! Please play it!

Just finished listening, it was fantastic.

While I was listening, I came up with so many other, better questions to ask. I've since forgotten most of them.

Hahaha, capital letters! Recently I played through Persona 3 and I used my real name for the main character, but I wasn't paying attention and entered my first and last names backwards. I almost started over, but the two or so hours at the beginning where you have almost no agency and can't save convinced me not to, so I spent the whole game with a weirdly ordered name. I hate when I screw that stuff up.

I finally played Earthbound last year by borrowing a friend's cart. If it never hits the Virtual Console it'll be a real shame. I'm hoping it shows up at Goodwill before I finally break down and pay eBay price. I think my favorite moment was the coffee break.

This was a really fun one guys. Good job as always. Also Topher, when you told Linde to tell you those '3 words' I totally thought, "Where's my sandwich?" first.

There is an American who has done what Shigesato Itoi has done, in terms of being a well-known author who decided to make a game and successfully did so in reflecting their style. Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is a fantastic game, though very very different.

That episode was awesome. It made me bust out my SNES, blow into every open port in the off-chance that would get it to start working, and threw EarthBound in. And it worked! It actually worked! Nostalgia is just flowing over!

I have to say that this was the first RPG in a long time I didn't need to go to an FAQ to figure out what the hell to do next. I'm surprised anyone would have trouble finding their way through it. for the record, I didn't play it when it came out, just went through it about 6 months ago.
