RetroforceGO! episode 70: The modern RPG (Retro Limbo #2) photo

Happy Friday, listeners! We missed you guys last week, and we're back with a new episode for you. This time we yacked it up about the modern RPG and how the games of the mid-90's turned the genre into what it is today, for better or for worse.

  • I'm still sick, and it sounds like it. Sorry.
  • Gravy Sweat. Ew.
  • I'm still calling him RobotFart
  • PlayStation Home should go home
  • Grinding: too much ice cream makes us puke
  • Look out world, here comes Chad Concelmo
  • The good, the bad and the ugly of the modern RPG
  • Screw you, Japan
Get the show early by subscribing to us on iTunes, or check it out right here. It's a long one this time, because we missed a week, and also because we launched into a long rant on how much we hate PlayStation Home. Enjoy, and we'll catch you again next week!

Yay, I get to be first! Maybe... I can't think of too many retro limbo RPGs. I don't know of any N64 ones and I can only think of Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast. I guess there's a lot on Playstation 1! I played FF7 and Chrono Trigger recently and coming from new eyes, I really did not enjoy the look and feel of FF7 but I am loving Chrono Trigger and have got quite far in it and am motivated to finish it. Looking forward to listen to the show to pick up on some games that I should check out!

Senisan, getting kicked in the nuts is free, too, and that sucks.

I have to admit. I finally got to play Home last night and had an enjoyable time. I was shocked!

(Don't hate me, Topher.) :)

I was on the beta for Home and I've heard it's still the same. I can't actually get on it at the moment. The beta was very boring, nothing really to do except walk around and put down your bubble machine then pick it up again. I do like the apartment by the sea though, it might be a good place to meet up to play a game. I don't really have a positive or negative thing to say about it, maybe that's the worst thing of all! :P

Home is so easy to walk around and piss people off on... I did that for like 40 minutes in the bowling alley while playing pool.

But not as fun as secound life when all I have to do in stand in the wrong spot to do it.

I had trouble listening to the podcast, but if retro-limbo means old school for the worse, the Persona 3 is archaic. Massively devoid of content outside of the dungeon, and inside the dungeon you have a horribly simplistic, anemically designed piece of garbage that you have to go to over and over for the whole game. Most over-rated game of last year.

Believe it or not, outside of Earthbound and Super Mario RPG, I didn't get into RPGs until about three or four years ago. Now that I've finally "broken the seal", retro RPGs are practically all I play. Listening to your RPG episodes get me so excited about the cool games I've missed that I can go back and try.

I like that half this episode was devoted to Lost Odyssey. That's such a great game. Dexter and I played through that game at the exact same time on XBox LIve. I'd be playing at midnight and I'd look on my friends list and go, "Wow! Dexter and I both just hit level 60 at the same time!" But then Dexter scolded me for not finishing all the side quests. :(

I can't wait for the next RPG episode, I'll make sure to re-ask my questions(seeing as most of them were about characters). Just a few post-show comments(written as I listened):

-I agree with you guys on Playstation Home, but I think it has potential still.

-Elder Scrolls: Arena, look it up before you call that style RPG game "new". It's been around for a while.

-@Chad:

I think you may have gotten Grandia 2 mixed up with another game. Grandia 2 was an amazing 3D JRPG on the Dreamcast(that was later ported to the PS2 w/o the(surprisingly good)voice acting). If you can track it down, GET IT, it's AMAAAAZZIIIIINGGG.

Super long post ahoy!

Frankly, I think the complicated synthesis and item creation aspects comes from a hidden and dark dark place.

MMOs have gained popularity, and THEY have the most convoluted ways to do simple shit. But wait, what's this? MMOs have roots in PC gaming where that kind of excessively complex construction is very, very, very common. In fact, even the Ultima series had this problem. And it's not like SNES RPGs were immune either. In fact.. Secret of Evermore's alchemy system was a pain in the ass. As was the cooking system in the original Star Ocean.

I mean, normally I hate to say "things weren't that good back then" but I didn't see THAT huge of a leap forward for RPGs in terms of complexity unless you're aiming for the really complex ones. Example? What was hard and convoluted about Dragon Quest VIII or Rogue Galaxy? Have you guys even PLAYED Okage? The main difference is in the old days the really complex RPGs were stuck on PCs. But they were still there.

Also, SHAME! Grandia 2 was a Dreamcast game. The original Grandia was the Playstation title.

HIIIII COLETTE! OMG YOU ROCK and I LOVE YOU!

So glad you made time for my question! You dont understand how happy I was hearing that you understand my Aeris love :P.

And I completely agree with you how everything she did made her feel so real....from the way she flirted with Cloud at the Gold Saucer, to the way she felt that only she could save the planet and went by herself to the Forgotten City (as to try and keep the rest of the party safe).

And to Topher, I'm currently playing Persona 3, so I'm actually really excited now to get to meet Fuuka now.

Great show as always, and I cant wait until part 2 :D :D

I love Persona 3! I was totally fed up with RPGs until FFXII and Persona 3 came along and got rid of the random encounter system and added other things to do.

Wait, Persona 3 is in this episode? It's not a retro limbo game, it only came out last year :I

Just joined the site here - HELLO!

Last week I was sick and stayed home from work. One of my friends recomended your podcast and let me say that you totally got a new fan ^_^ Your shows (think I'm like 15 shows in deep), tea and a runthrough of Magic Knight Rayearth (for SS) was pretty much the highlights of my week. It's pretty dark and cold in Denmark (where I'm from btw) this time of the year, so with you guys keeping me company while playing an ol'school action rpg, it kind of felt like childhood for while - THANKS!

BIGG Lunar and Grandia fan here to!

I enjoyed the show! Love the rpg discussions :) I made it a couple hours into Lost Odyssey and somehow got sidetracked away from it. After listening to the show I am excited to get back to it :)

I was laughing so much during chad's rap and I thought it would be an awesome idea to remix it.
Well I blatantly have more spare time than any man should rightfully have so I thought "meh" why not.

I've just finished it so if someone clever can tell me how to upload the mp3 that would be awesome.

Great podcast. Colette's sound level is a little high tho. I can't hear the rest of the crew when I set the volume so that Colette's voice isn't demolishing my ears. Love what she has to say tho, I just wish the sound wasn't clipping when she talks.

Another one: Stella Wong = Wet so long. (dyslexic, but doesn't it somehow make sense?)

Nobody ever mentions Baiten Kaitos for gamecube. Does anyone out there have any thoughts or feelings about this game? Or was it just that under the radar?
Personally, I loved it, but I've never even seen a review on it. So, I'm just really curious.

Also sorry I don't have any little icons yet, your website apparently hates me and won't let me add anything.
