RetroforceGO! episode 68: Sonic the Hedgehog with Jim Sterling photo

Happy Fr ... oh wait, it's Wednesday. Well that sucks. How about a new episode of RetroforceGO! to cheer you up?  We had Jim Sterling join us to talk about Sonic the Hedgehog. It was grand. Highlights include:

  • I <3 metal
  • Jim carves another notch in his bedpost
  • Space Invaders is awesome, so ... don't buy it.
  • NXE invented Penicillin
  • Jim Sterling: Professor of Sonicology
  • Sonic was good
  • Sonic was bad
  • Sonic is good again ... maybe
Check us out on iTunes to get an early dose, or be lame and get the new episode right here. We'll catch you next week, when we'll be recording early again so you can spend your Thursday stuffing yourself with turkey.

His willingness to defend Dynasty Warriors and love for all things Sega not withstanding, Jim Sterling is no susbtitute for Dyson Grigsby.

Haven't finished listning, but.. Sonic CD was re-released as part of the Sonic Gems Collection on the Gamecube.

Here is a link to the remix album with that orchestral remix of Sky Sancturary Zone and the whole soundtrack from Sonic 3 & Knuckles(because yes, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are essentially one game)

YES perfect timing! The dtoid podcasts turn long boring walks into long awesome walks.

And as his name was mentioned earlier; when oh when will you return Dyson :( RfGO! is amazing without you, but even better with. Quite a lot actually, borderline mindmelting as it is.

In Sonic Adventure 1, Robotnick also referred to himself as Robotnick, not Eggman. Sega didn't make him call himself Eggman until Adventure 2.

If you managed to play through to Shadow's story in Sonic '06(tough I know), he actually had a decent story in it where he didn't use guns and didn't fight aliens. He was basically just a mercenary for GUN in '06.

Jim, if you watched all the story scenes in Sonic '06, how come you didn't mention that in the "final story", the game basically retcons itself out of existence(so none of the events in the game actually happened).

Anyhow, finished listening to the episode.

Jim, you did not disappoint me in this episode(though I honestly didn't expect you to). Also, will you be comparing the PS3/360 versions of Sonic Unleashed to the Wii/PS2 version?

Yeah, Sonic CD was rereleased on the gamecube in the gems collection. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

Although the gems collection was really bad so I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it. Sure CD was good but all the odd choices to put on the disc with it pulled it down. It's like putting dogshit on a plate next to some steak. The steak could be the best damn steak you ever ate but the fact that it is served with a pile of shit will ruin your experience of it.

Sonic CD was brought back twice in more crappy ways.

They brought out a crappy poorly emulated PC version around 1995 to 1996 3 years after it first came out. It came free with a new CD drive I bought at the time to or you could just buy it sega was doing it whole sega PC lineup then that died off with the dreamcast later.

the version in "sonic gems collection" is a crappy emulation of the crappy emulated PC version of sonic cd.

Water is screwed over there is more slow down, looks uglyer sound effects are not right, and the worst offender it is missing the secret content and does not seem to control as responsive.

the port of sonic the fighters on the disc with it is not that great either you can pick up the real arcade machine mainboard for a steal these days.

OH ya and the CD audio sounds like bad compressed low bit rate mp3 and hell of al ot worse on a good sound system on the gamecube.

Modern Sonic games are the best. They come closer than any other form of media in expressing the human condition. They are true art.

THe PC version does not work anymore anyway.

Windows up direct x changes killed that off and the fan boy made patches do not work either.

Oh ya so unless you got a PC from 1996 running windows 95 or 98 you are screwed.

I could help him run the sega cd version with good emulation...

I draw the line at sending him one of my sega CD's or mega cd's though,

I have to say, the first Sonic game has to be my favorite just 'cause of that classic flavor and the memories of my siblings and me renting a genesis just to play it.
