RetroforceGO! episode 61: Beat 'em ups photo

Happy Friday, listeners! This week we punched transvestites in the face and ate pizzas that magically fell from broken mailboxes. If you've ever played a beat 'em up, you know what I'm talking about. Highlights include:

  • Awesome chiptune intro by Torzelan!
  • Dodge these super balls
  • PSN coverage? On my RFGO?!?
  • I'll have what she's having
  • The final Rev Rant, and the dawn of a new segment
  • You should check out Dad 'n Me
  • Coming soon: Chocobo refrigerators
  • 2P Mode C
  • I don't actually have a purse.
  • Punching people is fun!
  • Oil drums: Now with turkey dinner
This episode also marks the end of the Rev Rant as we know it. Why? Because it's Anthony's segment and he can do what he wants with it. We're pretty sure you'll like his new thing, though. You can check out the first installment of it, as well as the rest of the show right here. Have a great week, and don't forget to punch someone!

So is Dyson on permanent vacation? Not that you aren't amazing, Snr. Concelmo, but I do miss the dulcet tones of his voice.

Gotta say, I found fallacy in the GOW arguement. The claim is because the GOW series isn't straight brawling and it does become involved with a ton of attack variants, invalidates GOW as a brawler? Almost a valid arguement but didn't you BUY new attacks and combos in River City Rampage? Likewise you guys are willingly accepting God Hand as a brawler, but GOW is too far out?

I don't really think Brawlers are dead, they are just evolving into something that no longer resembles Captain Commando.

End of the Rev Rant? Seriously? That's kind of the best part... : (

How did I not mention Odin Sphere on the Beat Em Up episode!!??? Damn it. I'll say this again for no reason whatsoever: Anyone who complains about the block button being mapped to the attack button does not understand the game: There is absolutely no reason to try to block in that game. Odin Sphere is about damage avoidance and resource management...

Completely irrelevant, I know.

I get the feeling it won't be emulatable in Rom form. You'll have to find some other way to back up your copy. *cough*

That'd be hard to find since Mega Man 9 isn't an NES game besides looking like one.

Distinct lack of "PEW PEW PEW" when you talked about Megaman 9. I expect a free second helping of "PEW PEW PEW" with next weeks podcast.

Also, Dad 'n Me ish pwn.

Oh, and to the Reverend's gamer dictionary thing:

Didn't expect that one of you mentions "Sailor Moon R". I played this game about a month ago but wasn't very fascinated about it. It was kind of fun but more for its weirdness (exspecially the enemy character design) than for the actual gameplay.

New gamer dictionary idea, I'd call that either an Internal Macro or an 'Organic Macro' as its a preset sequence of buttons that changes and expands in your memory as you get further.

Just one correction regarding Guardian Heroes, which is also my favorite beat'em up right next to the first Streets of Rage (more due to great childhood memories): the Story mode only supports two players, while the Versus mode supports up to six players within a limited arena. It's a shame, but it's due to technical limitations, there are still terrible slowdowns on story mode with one or two players.

Also, I always called the God of War/Dynasty Warriors games "button mashers" but comparing those games with Battletoads, they're actually fall into a beat'em up category, since they all offer the same gameplay variations.

Oh and Okami is different, it's a mix of Zelda and Final Fantasy-esque "random" battles.

Pssst, Anthony. "Muscle Memory" might be the phrase you're looking for ;)

Also, Colette? A warning next time for when you play orgasms on the podcast? I love me sum orgasms, but I don't listen to podcasts without headphones, and I'm spending the weekend at my parent's for their anniversary.

Imagine me in my room, with he door closed, with orgasms playing...

...actually, it's pretty funny now that I think of it. Nevermind :D

"Oh and Okami is different, it's a mix of Zelda and Final Fantasy-esque "random" battles."

You mean it's like Zelda without the fun.
Okami started off good and just instantly goes downhill after that. Once you realize that there are no dungeon puzzles to solve, it's just the "inbetween" stuff in Zelda with constant, boring, real-time battle sequences. No matter what art style you have in the game, it's not going to hide the fact that it's boring and monotonous. And oh god don't even THINK about trying to play the Wii version... >_>

You and I must complete opposites. Okami is my second favorite game of all time. No opinion on the Wii version, though, haven't played it.

Wait, are we trying to come up with a term for the pure muscle memory (Phoenix Gamma) of restarting, or for the concept of restarting in order to perfect your performance, as in messing up your chain in Ikaruga?

If it is the latter, I propose: "Re-perfecting"

After listening - I recalled my addiction to Captain America and the Avengers in the arcades. Nothing was better than having one person drive while hitting the fire button 'track and field style' during the flying portions of the game. ESPECIALLY fighting the Sentinel or Master Mold (depending on who you ask).
