RetroforceGO! Episode 48: The retro renaissance? photo

With all the "everything old is new again" mentality floating around the gaming world, the crew of RFGO! decided to weigh in on the current state of retro. Are companies just cashing in on the seemingly hot trend of retro? Or are the retro revivals on the horizon a signal that you can't keep a good franchise down? Maybe it's a little bit of both, who knows? That's why the gang decided to throw in our own two cents on the subject for this week's show.

Highlights!

  • Dyson returns from the awesome apocalypse
  • Happy birthday Topher!
  • Listen to my stories
  • All awesome, all the time
  • The power of four is back!
  • New picture trend is win
  • No joke. Design my next tattoo
Since I'm once again writing this in the most hasty manner, I'm just going to leave you with the download page, and well wishes. Til next week, folks!

I like Retronauts, but they don't hold a candle to you guys.

Also I said this in your blog Dyson, but I don't get the appeal to GTA either. You're not the only one at all.

I was playing the PSone version of Lunar and I know that it's a remake, but I would love ANOTHER remake because that game is SO DAMN GOOD :D

I'm totally with Topher on the "don't remake it if it's still fun" thing. I can' enjoy shit like Pacman or Space Invaders, and Space Invaders Extreme totally made it fun again.

But...am I so wrong for wanting a remake of Zelda 1? It doesn't need anything new...just diagonal movement. That an a Zelda II that doesn't knock my head half-way up my own ass.

Holy shit Colette! Did you know Conspiracy Games was supposed to bring the Sega Ages remakes to the US a few years ago, but never happened? I remember following the news on RPGamer a few years ago. I'm so mad. They were supposed to redo Phantasy Star IV too and it NEVER FUCKING HAPPENED!!! Boo!

I think in terms of "remakes/revivals" I don't need much, but I would like to look at these "remakes" as "Director's cuts" if you will. In that case I would WANT to see Super Metroid, ALTTP, Chrono Trigger, etc.

I've read in interviews that due to storage limitations only about 25% of the dialogue from FFIV made it into the game. While I don't think the remaining 75% made it into the DS version, but I'm interested in seeing how much more flushed out the characters would be when there is less of a technological hinderance. I'm sure FFIV isn't the only game out there like that. Also this interview came from people that originally worked on the game. It makes me hopeful that it will be good (fangirlism aside).

You guys talk about updating graphics, but what about audio? I think a lot of these games would be amazing with some re-orchestrations and audio makeovers.

Dyson, I liked the Prime games, but I would take a 2D Metroid over a 3D Metroid ANY DAY for what that's worth. I also want a 2.5D Castlevania game on a console. The excuses they're making is bullshit.

@Topher regarding series that get fucked with: You mean everything Sega has done *cough* Phantasy Star *cough* Shining Force *cough* Sonic?

Seriously developers, like they say: take more risks. It's sad that most of my most anticipated titles are are on portables and small download, not the big "generic" titles. Stupid kids.

Also, sorry for posting a picture that derailed the beginning of part 2 and started the Dyson/Topher Blood Feud.

On the webpage for Norway's biggest national newspaper recently:
A fox mother came to some family's house, screaming for aid to rescue her children who's been trapped in a hole near the edge of a road.
Apparently the fox mother's been visiting the family for years for food, so she's basicly tame now.

So, here's some picture of the cute fox babies, wich should satisfy your need Colette. :)

Wild Whacker is my new best friend. And not in the Chad Concelmo "new best friend" way, where he gets a new one every twenty minutes ;)

AN Challenger, that poem of mine is far, far older than Symphony of the Night. Even older than the N64! I'd actually have to sit down and rewrite it from memory, as I've never actually written it down on paper before, it's always been verbal.

Brian, Rev is actually a non-entity. Not in the way that implies that he is a non-person, but in that his mere presence will negate The Power of Four's ability to coexist, while simultaneously ripping a hole in the fabric of the universe and depositing our useless bodies in a merlinesque crystal cage.

I believe it is more commonly referred to as Paraguay.

Fox babies are cute!

SWPM, His Majesty and I thank you again!

Sloshball is invite only, but I know I guy who can make things happen ...

Nai, thanks for the compliments. Also, I did see you catch my Cblog. I'm glad I'm not alone in the opinions that I have for the GTA series. Also, Prime is what it is, people can like it or not, but it ain't what the series deserves :(

C'mon Zero, you don't think I would've grabbed Guardian Heroes if it was there ;)

Mmmm, new Golgo 13 series info (its kind of scattered) Episode 3 aired in Japan over the weekend I believe. You can torrent episodes 1 and 2 fansubs so far. 3 is probably up soon here if not already. Apparentely they are making 50 episodes...go ahead and wet yourself now and light up a smoke, I know I did.

thank you for quoting me. and just a tought, imagine a metroid or a catlevania in 2D, or with 3D characters but with a 2D gameplay but with the potential of the modern console, the fan orgasm will be massive like a room full with naked asian women with ikaruga bikinis playing taito drum master drinking pepsi chocobo special edition and eating pizza rolls with dolphin shape.

*Warning* Rant coming on, because I'm replying to a lot of what was said at once...
Colette, there is no FF1 and 2 for the DS, just for the PSP. There is FF Dawn of Souls, which is FF1 and 2 for GBA.
Also, I'm going to mention MM Powered Up (MMPU) and Maverick Hunter X (MHX) again because:
a) I am admittedly a fanboy
2) They are vastly underrated games
c) It's an apt argument

Colette mentioned the FF1 and 2 for PSP, and how they were just beautifying the sprites/graphics without changing anything. Also, there was the comment about comparing a remake/revival (I'd call it a "reinvention") to the original.
Well, MMPU is MM1, with BEAUTIFUL graphics on the PSP, luscious colorful 2.5 graphics (3D graphics on a 2D play-field), and true-to-the-original gameplay. MHX was the same way - it was Mega Man X with 2.5D graphics, better storytelling, but the same mechanics. The great thing about MMPU is that the original MM1 comes on the UMD, so you can directly compare.

We need more things like that, I considered those to be essentially fanservice not just cashwhoring. I think Rondo of Blood was like that too.

As for Iga and a 2 or 2.5D Castlevania, I agree that XBLA/PSN would be best ofr those. I actually worry about the next iterations of the portables; if they get too powerful, is there going to be a push towards 3D on them like on the PS2? Sony, from what I heard, pushed developers very hard to produce 3D games for the PS2. If that's true, will there be a push away from 2D everywhere? Will there be too much of a push towards "realistic" graphics? I still like 2D games with stylized graphics. I know there's the ongoing debate about stylized vs. realistic graphics, and I think most of us agree that what constitutes "good" graphics is highly dependent of style, and that style of graphics a) must fit the game, and b) must be done well, regardless of what the style is.

FInally, as for FF7, I've played it a few times: the first time, and periodically thereafter, every few years, and I think it becomes less interesting and less FUN each time through. I find that, as I experience the story more and more, I realize it's very poorly told. The gameplay is fine, it's just a typical JPRG; the materia makes every character generic in terms of gameplay/style, but I think the bigger point is that this "epic" story just flows poorly and is badly written. Sorry Colette! I think as the "newness" wore off with repeated playing, the glow faded and I saw things with a more critical eye I realized that it doesn't hold up the way FF4 and FF6 do.

Okay, that's it for now. Sorry for the TL/DNR-esque post.
PS. FF4DS is supposed to have new content that wouldn't fit in the SFC/SNES version, and I think it looks BEAUTIFUL!

Heh, I was about to write to you about the Transformers movie and how awesome it still is. Then I remembered the travesty that is the live-action Transformers movie which you're probably referring to. After I watched that I watched the animated one 3 times in a row, and the tears from seeing (spoiler alert :p) Optimus Prime die washed away the pain.

Oh, and to alleviate some of your fears: last I heard the original team (or at least as many as they could get I assume) are working on the new Earthworm Jim. So there's a good reason to be excited about the game. :)

Awesome episode as always.

FFIV is precious to me like VII is to Collette. I understand where she is coming from but anytime I see something about the IV remake I have to hold back tears. I don't know why but I guess I just have a different reaction to it being remade.

hate to break up the circle jerk, but did I really need to hear the play by play of your entire weekend? I know I'm being a dick, and I feel bad because I love the show. This one was hard for me though. Stories are fun, but that was painful to get through. You have friends, you get drunk, you go out on the weekends and do crazy things. We get it!

and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, That's all I can hear right now.
