RetroforceGO! Episode 42: Easter Eggs! photo

Hooray! Another year, another chance to celebrate the Raptor Jesus. It was a pretty good Easter, the Marshmallow Peeps did not end up getting Topher. He was rescued at the last minute by a shark named CTZ, who was also riding on top of an elephant when doing the saving. It was pretty epic, I swear.

Another thing that was epic was recording on Saturday instead of Sunday. The epic-ness would have been thrice fold had I finished the show and made it ready for Easter consumption, but there was a whole bunch of things that got in the way of that happening, and instead of the usual highlights I'll list the those things in no particular order instead.

Things!*

  • First and foremost, I woke up at 3 p.m.
  • It was a beautiful day, so went for a bike ride to the beach
  • Husky and I killed some Peeps, marshmallow variety
  • I went to Sizzler for the first time and made mashed potato tacos
  • I then covered the tacos with nacho cheese -- It was awesome
  • I had to get my GBA back from a friend, and it was covered in weird sticky stuff
  • Not scary sticky stuff, but more like 'I spilled a soda on it' sticky stuff
  • I watched the movie Hitman, it was pretty decent
  • I am about to have more Pizza Rolls, and then dance The Robot

That was only just a small amount of all the things that made the show late and the weekend awesome (cheesy mashed potato tacos are soooo good), so I hope you can understand the late but not really late because it's Monday anyway posting of this week's show. Oh, which you can find right here :)

*(Each of the things listed are 100% true. I really do have a weird life, and dance The Robot.)

Peeps are amazing, right? I was shocked to see this story on the local news last night: http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=88634

Long story short... they dressed a guy up in a creepy bunny costume and had him hand out free Peeps on a college campus. They are shocked to discover that people don't take candy from a stranger in a creepy bunny costume. They actually called Peeps the "fruit cake of Easter." The nerve!

OK, vexed alex hates Peeps. Am I the only one that loves them? Surely there are other Peeps lovers out there? Surely Chad is a Peep lover? What if they made dolphin-shaped Peeps? (Maybe you guys talk about this, I haven't listened yet.)

Son of a bitch, answered my own question by just following the Peep death threat link in the story. Chad *does* love Peeps! I knew I could count on him.

But seriously, dolphin Peeps anyone? We need to make that happen.

bite the head off a regular peep. Then bite the front part of the body then stick the head to the front (the muzzle). Take the other part and stick it to the top (the fin). Then stick it in the microwave for 20 seconds.

Here's some scary info about peeps:
http://www.peepresearch.org/
Those things are INDESTRUCTIBLE!!!

Also, the easter eggs in Mega Man X and Mega Man X2 were the BEST! The Dragon Punch could easily be used to kill the last boss in one or two hits! But getting Zero's sword in Mega Man X3 was even better, because you didn't need full health to use it and it killed everything in two hits max.

1) Peeps are great, but dry up too quickly. I wish they came bundled in twos or something.

2) It's Erdrick, not Eldrick from Dragon Warrior. In the later Final Fantasy remakes after the merger the tombstone says "Here lies Link."

3) I'm surprised you guys hadn't heard of Totaka's Song. I'm actually not huge into music easter eggs, but this one has such a long history of the tune... it's in Zelda, Luigi's Mansion... hmmmm...

4) There's a lot of really cool easter eggs that I didn't know about before this. I forgot about all the cool 4th wall ones.

5) I LOVED retro Katamari. I wish they would develop a full-fledged retro version for download, like PSN, XBLA, WiiWare... don't care where, they need to do it.

6) "_________ is ___________" Thanks guys, I still haven't played Bioshock. :( I know it's been a while, but the game's been out for less than a year. This isn't Phantasy Star II. I have to go find it and play it now. I think when I beat that game I will have to write a c-blog about the etiquette when it comes to spoilers. Because seriously, when is it okay to reveal them on the net?

Not that ______ is ______ tells me anything, but it's the principle of the thing!

7) I read the "what are you playing" articles and I always listen to the very end of the podcast to hear the 2 second after-show.

8) I sooooo wish I could go to Cancun and be there for your live Retroforce episode. I've heard maybe there will be a live PAX one too??? Maybe I need to make it a point to be there for that...? :D

Some of my favorite easter eggs are from Fallout 2 because I know what the references are. There are a few of them like when walking around the map, you can run into random encounters. Theres one where you find chunks of a whale and a tulip in the midst of it (Hitch-hikers guide to the universe). Another is a bridge with a guardian that asks you three questions and if you counter his last question with a question, he blows up (Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Theres a few others like the Cafe of Broken Dreams which lets you find an ally from the first game and one that lets you go back in time and become the catalyst of the first game.

Also in Zelda Ocarina of Time, if you look through the opposite window, a guard chucks a bomb at you.

OH, one more! If you put connect the original Sonic game into Sonic and Knuckles, theres a way you can get past the screen that tells you to take it out. When you do, you can play those crazy zones that is like a checker-board-planet thing where you have to touch all the blue balls and turn them red.

Great ep! I especially loved the mid-episode pizza roll *CRUNCH* :P

You spoke a bit about "breaking the 4th wall", and my favorite example of that was in Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube..they had the "insanity meter" that if it got full, would trigger strange things in the game. Two of my favorites were: one time, the game muted its own sound, and showed the volume being muted on the screen, as if I had pushed the mmute button....I seriously checked under myself to see if I hadn't sat on the remote or something.

The other example was once when I went to save, the game brought up a prompt saying "Delete this file"? I panicked (since I was pretty far in the game) and clicked cancel...the game proceeded to "delete" itself. I shouted at the screen, but then the game returned to normal and I realized I was had again :P

@Incredible Edible

From what I can remember, most Genesis games worked for that check-board-planet game....in fact, different games would give different layouts for the orbs and stuff! (if I remember that right)

@Chad
I like peeps :D.

Becoming the chicken in TP is not at cool as being attacked =(, maybe if you saw some kid or Link still attacking you while as the chicken it would've been better.

The 2d Mario in Mario RPG was amazing, although it sucked that you couldn't leave the room as that.

@Dyson
I remember the MegaMan capcom moves, they were insanely awesome. It wasn't that hard getting to a boss if you continued moving normal, the problem was that you feel incredibly powerful and just run directly into the enemies, you become mad with power. :D

I expected a lot more from the DS version of Animal Crossing after hearing so much (but never playing) the GC one.

@Topher
Excellent response about the letter :P.

Yeah, we read the games of the week Topher, it reminds me of things I should play.

Haha, great show. Pizza Rolls Rule! Soooo good.

I know not many PC games ever get mentioned :-/ but my favorite Easter Egg has always been the dancing zombies in Thief 2. I laughed so hard, so hilarious for such a serious game. Very random and hard to find too.

Hidden funny secrets in games are very cool in a retro way. Adds more fun. Some developers need to lighten up some imo.
