RetroforceGO! Episode 41: Part one of the Hardware Series: Controllers photo

Is it me, or is it St. Patty's day? I'd heard that the church had moved the holiday to another day because of Lent, is this true? If so, as an Irish man this means that we get two days of celebration. Now I don't meant that we as a whole would go against the wishes of the church, far from it, but we sure aren't going to pass up drinking on the 17th of March now, are we?

So, while everyone is celebrating the 17th or of March and not St Patty's day today, we here at a RFGO! would like to contribute some retro podcast for your listening pleasure. To make it even more interesting, try taking a drink every time Chad says the word "like." You'll mostly likely be unconscious before you get to the Rev Rant ;)

Highlights!

  • The dark days are over
  • Hindsight is 20/20
  • Almost as bad as Yaris?
  • Too much forking, not enough knifing
  • Probation period is a stint in the bucket
  • I guess you need more batteries if you have IRL friends
  • I just cast things away, apparently
  • What's your dream controller?

Drunk yet? Well then you're slacking, people! We've got a Monday to go out and celebrate, so y'all better hop to it. In the meantime, get you fix right here, and let us know what you think of the Hardware Series in the comments.

I am really not a fan of the Classic Controller. The D-pad on that thing is so "smoosh-y" that it's murder (thank goodness I got the SNES and NES controller adapters from Retrousb.com, and the N64 adapter from ralphnet.net!). And, as I'm finding out from playing Brawl for long periods of time, it starts really irritating the palm of my hand after some time passes. And trying to use the analog stick in place of actual c-buttons on N64 games=fail. It is so inaccurate for games like StarFox and Ocarina of Time.

Oh, and longer=better. I've never ever ever never thought to myself, "Jeez, is this over yet?!" On the contrary, I've often thought to myself, "aw man, it's over already!"

On this, you're longest episode to date, I would have loved for it to go on longer!

Haxan, Dyson did pare down about 30-45 minutes of break bs-ing, my bad audio, and other various nuggets not fit for the listening audience. I completely agree though, the long shows are the ones that stick in my memory the most. I've always told Dyson that we don't care how long they talk, just that they keep talking. As the unofficial archivist of the show, here's some examples of long shows that are full of win:

RFGo! 11 - Forgotten Franchises (95:36) - The notorious Muppet Vietnam episode.
RFGo! 13 - Unpleasant Burrito Experiences (86:44) - PAX talkin' and my first time in the bucket.
RFGo! 14 - Everything's Coming Up Metroid (89:42) - First show that prompted an immediate follow up (and the only one to screw up the numbering system by doing the whole ".5" thing). This is also where the Dolphometer is created by Colette.
RFGo! 20 - Zelda Pt. 2 (117:01) - Only Chad likes Twilight Princess.
RFGo! 30 - New Years Retrolutions (102:32) - Topher nominates the Fall Dashboard Update as the #10 best XBLA game of 2007.

Most of the shows beyond this point are all nearly an hour and a half in length.

RFGo! 32 - Shmups! (107:03) - Professor Topher takes us all to school.
RFGo! 35 - Anything but the Super Bowl (110:25) - 2nd fan-made intro (Athiestium get's 1st honors on episode 7) and PUPPY BOWL!

Other personal favorites:
#3 - The Flipper intro still makes me laugh every time I hear it.
#15 - Angelsdontburn becomes the 2nd community member to snag a guest spot on the show.
#16 - The Robot-in-Chief, Niero himself, guest hosts.
#26 - Retrofeast is quite possibly the funniest fucking episode ever. Double Dribble voice FTMFW! Also, plane crash episode.
#29 - Colette gets a double-ended dildo that plays the dungeon theme from Zelda. Best Christmas present EVER!

Folks, if you haven't gone back and listened or re-listened to Retroforce, you really owe it to yourself to do so. There are so many great moments you've missed out on or forgotten. Once again, thanks to all the folks that help make the show possible, it's AMAZING!

Best Controllers:

Saturn > Dreamcast > Genesis 3-Button

By the way, the Nyko charges for the Wii Remote are great. Nyko's definitely been making up for Nintendo's stupidity in the controller department. I really need to get a wireless Nunchuk.

Oh, I had the Super Advantage joystick. I got it, along with Street Fighter II, for my birthday one year. It was almost a very disappointing time, as we no longer had our NES, and my mom accidentally bought the NES Advantage and Mario is Missing (WTF?). Thankfully, the returned both and got what I wanted.

My favorite SNES controller is probably the Capcom Soldier Pad, which is actually available for 3DO (and maybe other consoles), as well.

Oops...*she* returned them both.

By the way, regarding wrapping controller cords, I don't wrap the cords around the controllers. I just gather up the cord as you would an extension cord. No stress on any part of the cord.

As for the Jaguar controller, it's actually pretty comfortable, although the buttons feel like complete ass. They're too spongy.

The Saturn 3D controller, as was mentioned during the podcast, was very similar to the Dreamcast controller. Why Sega didn't put six buttons on the face of the Dreamcast controller, I'll never know. Anyway, the Saturn 3D controller was awesome for games like PowerSlave and Quake.

Hahahaha...nice to hear some Dreamcast controller love. I agree. Fucking. Greatest. D-pad. Ever. Its feel is perfect, but its placement is even better. It's really the only controller, in my opinion, that allows you to use both the analog stick and d-pad for important functions in a game. MDK2, for instance, allowed you to use the d-pad so effectively for item management on the fly.

As for the controller shell, honestly, it's very comfortable, but I think that its design really doesn't encourage readjusting your hand placement as you can with other controllers, so it causes more hand cramping.

Ah, regarding using the analog and d-pad at the same time, the Xbox and Xbox 360 controllers are quite usable that way, but those controllers were obviously very much inspired by the Dreamcast controller.

As for the Wii Remote, in my opinion, it's probably one of the worst controllers as far as design goes. Motion control really isn't all there yet, as the sheer number of times that I've messed up in games due to unresponsive motion controls really just pisses me off. The very notion that you can "expand" a controller by attaching other things is just ridiculous. It's like Nintendo realized that the Wii Remote would be inadequate. Also, why in God's name do you need to tether an attachment to a cordless controller with a cord? God, that blows. And I hate whipping myself in the face with the Nunchuk cord while playing.

About the N64 and GameCube D-pads...
1) Mischief Makers (aka Yuke Yuke!! Trouble Makers in Japan) used the D-pad exclusively, and the analog stick was NEVER used, and it was GREAT. The N64 controller was fairly comfortable in that position, which made me annoyed that more games didn't utilize it.
2) X-Men: Next Dimension (a horrible game, but I got it as a gift) used the D-pad in the GameCube version, and the analog stick did weird shit and wasn't very useful. And I'm sorry Topher, but that D-pad was the most useless piece of garbage I've used. Left was up, right was up, down was occasionally up. It was IMPOSSIBLE to accurately play with it.

A little back ,you guys thanked me for mentioning the Hori 360 controller. However, I mentioned a 3rd-party controller that is IMO BETTER.

This thing seriously has one of the best Dpads around, and the triggers are better than the 1st party 360. I can't remember if the bumpers are any good, though (I ordered mine but it's not here yet... haven't played it since my old job)

I can't exactly afford to buy you one Topher but I BEG you to get one because you'll never bitch about a controller again. They make a bigger version out there somewhere, too.

some dude ebaying here

2+ hours of retro awesomeness! sweet. I hated controllers with turbo when I was growing up. I knew alot of kids that said they were awesome at particular games, but completely fell apart if you made them stop abusing their precious turbo.

Gotta agree with Chad about be able to lounge around with the wiimote.

Ever tried the Neo-Geo/Neo-Geo Pocket controller with the micro-thumbstick thing? Too much travel for shooters, but it's (unsurprisingly) badass for fighters.

As for the 360 pad, I've been trying to play *whisper* Live For You *whisper* this last week, and I'm finding that the face buttons have a bit too much travel for something requiring that kind of timing - I'm having to start pressing the buttons early to score, but because the bumpers are a touch more sensitive I find I'm hitting them too early. Bah.

Whilst I'm on the subject of Live For You and retro controllers, I leave you with this...

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this...
But this is for Topher.
If the wii classic controller is a little bit slippery or odd to hold onto, they do sell grips for it. Just something to think over. p.s. mofu mofu made my friday

@Topher
I admit I will download and play that game :).

@Chad
I agree Chad, turbo is cheating >.>.

I also always hated having to play against guys that had a controller with turbo one. My friends older brothers were jerks <.<.

Classic controller feels weird on some games, maybe there should be different versions?

@Dyson
I haven't heard people call systems a "playstation", lucky me I guess even my family and friends are old school and call everything a "Nintendo" :P.

Also, turbo cheater ;).

@Colette
Whereeee aaaareeeee youuuuuuuu!?!?!?!

Hey, when you guys do the inevitably peripherals show, be sure to cover all the cool controllers you can only get from Japan.

Here are some of my favorites:

-The Hori Gamecube Digital Pad-
An SNES-style pad, great for Gameboy Player, Megaman Collection, Sonic Mega Collection, the Zelda 4-in-1 disc, and even Virtual Console!

-The ASCII Grip-
There actually was a PS1 version of this sold in America, but if you want the Saturn or SNES equivelant, you have to get it imported. Best RPG controller ever.

-The Capcom Soldier Pad-
Arcade-style control pad for SNES fighting games, particularly Street Fighter. Weirdly configured but awesome once you got used to it!

-The Super Gameboy Controller-
Not the most essential controller, but it was designed to resemble the bottom half of the classic Gameboy, AND it had a real slow-mo button that actually changed the speed of the game clock.
