I can honestly say, ladies and gentleman, that the response to yesterday's post that Topher made about this week's show was surprising. I knew that a lot of you listened to the show, but to see a total of 82 responses to a post about a show that has yet to even air, certainly impressed the hell out of us. Then again, the subject of the show may have had a lot to do with it ... nah, it was because you love us so much, isn't it? Isn't it?!
Well, at least that's what I'm going to tell myself.
Highlights!
- This is the FBI. What can you tell us about a Mr. Dolphin A. McDolphinsons?
- No XBLA game this week? I guess you can play with the update :P
- Well, at least it wasn't Carcassonne II: Carcassonne Harder
- This Wednesday, Topher will be here. Feel free to buy him beer
- Chad List Goooooooooooooooooo!!!!
- RFGO! -- We survived the Console Wars
- Mode 7 gives Topher Highway Hypnosis
- (As far as I'm concerned, Baltimore is in some fantasy land.)
- Do you all want another show?
Lookity! Much like the SNES was, this week's show is chock full of goodness. So much so, in fact, that we leave it up to you to determine if we need another episode. In the meantime, go over here to find you RFGO! sauce. When you're done listening to that, come right back here to give us the yeah or nay. But remember, though, like Indiana Jones; you must choose wisely.
(Special thanks to Bob Bobson for the awesome Mario Bee-sprite!)
viva la nintendo!
I know, it´s hard to believe, but what would you think if I told you Sega translated Phantasy Star too 15 years ago, when RPGs were a very obscure genre here...
I got into RFGO last week, so this has been like a crack addict waiting for crack. Or something.
Also, I use the US controller for my PAL SNES! Does that make me fancy? I like the concave buttons!
I didn't get into RPGs on the SNES, which makes me really sad now because they're all 100 bucks on eBay and shit if I want to play them legit. I did rent and beat Super Mario RPG, though, which was the first RPG I ever played. I had no idea what the hell RPG stood for at the time.
One of the things that can't be overstated is how much better the SNES sounded than the Genesis. Seriously, aside from Sonic and a few other select Genesis games I haven't heard anything musically that even approaches what was done on the SNES. Donkey Kong Country had a faaaaaaaantastic soundtrack. So did Star AFox, and Mega Man X, and Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island even though it's only like 5 songs, and Super Metroid (which I played for the first time on VC,) and.....
I think Mega Man X might have my favorite SNES soundtrack.
I love how the limitations of the hardware seemed to unify the look and feel and sound of a lot of the games on the system, and that feel was particular to the SNES. Now if a game comes out with Redbook audio fully orchestrated and voice acting and bloom lighting etc. it would be hard to tell from a video whether it was running on an Xbox 360 or a PS3, or a PC, or even the Wii.
Awesome show, guys. As usual. And please make a second SNES show. I'd love to hear it because there is still so much ground to cover.
TOTALLY! :) :) :)
Hint books? That´s so 90´s :)
1. Actraiser
2. Star Fox
3. Mega Man X
4. Family Dog
Because, as you may or may not know:
Nah, but seriously, I was really hoping for some talk about Earthbound, I think it really deserves some time to be talked about, or even going on about the whole localization fiasco.
You make me very sad RFGO, very sad.
I can understand not liking Eternal Champions, It certainly was not the epic fighting game Sega wanted it to be, but there were FAR worse released during the fighting game craze of the 90's. I was a fighting game junkie, and have fond (albeit frustrating) memories of Eternal Champions, and the superior Sega CD version (Challenge from the Dark Side, bitches!)
I'm curious, where any of the Retroforce crew avid fighting game junkies during their heyday? I totally see parallels between the fighting game craze and the current FPS dominance.
I know there was some Mortal Kombat hate bouncing around, but during the fighting game craze MK was as relevant as any other fighter, and MK2 is still a damn good fighting game. Don't get me wrong- Street Fighter is my co-pilot, but back in the day MK2 had much more competition at the arcades on any given day then any other game.
@joeleeriepa- Dyson and I are both big 2D fighter junkies.
We are 2d fighting junkies, for sure. We did do an RPG episode that had a WHOLE LOT of Earthbound love, if I'm not mistaken. Hamsa's email is ctz@destructoid.com. I love how New Challenger is still wining contests. Jasongame, I shit you not, I've been looking for that very same controller for years. I remember the picture that you're talking about, but can't find it anywhere on the 'net. All I find are cheap knockoffs :P Thank you Torzelan!
And of course, we'll do another show!
(Did I miss anything, guys? Terranigma? What's that? Oh, okay, I get it. Next time, for sure.)
The only RPG I will ever love, repeat, and orgasm over.
<3
Amyway.....
@CTZ
YES! Super Mario RPG!
A New Challenger - funny you should mention that, Mega Man X certainly (as is standard when it comes to the series) had amazing music and I was thinking about it all day yesterday and today, and plan to make (start, atleast) a cover/reinterpretation of one of the tracks when I get home from work.
Finally, curse time, or the lack of it. I'm already down to 3-5 hours of sleep / night (it's not working out all that well no, but like some one else mentioned it atleast doesn't "turn me into a monster") and still have no chance to play all the new interesting RPG's; no less revisit old ones. It would be great to hear more about Terranigma, because though I never played it myself, I saw most of it played by my stepfather. BUT, that was such a long time ago that I remember nothing, except the graphics and most importantly that there was this one scene - I remember no circumstances, not the characters involved, the plot or the music (which must have been great) - where I had one of those epic emotional moments of gaming a'la Chad's "The Memory Card". I just can't remember what it was and it's driving me nuts, but is a definite proof that Terranigma, whatever it was about, was awesome. How was fighting even done in that game? Secret of Mana style? That's how I remember the game anyway; as SoM-like. But it could be only because of the graphics, I just don't remember.
If you have SNES carts that has been vandalized by some fucker writing his name in marker on it, dip a cotton swab in some rubbing alcohol and gently swab the name. This takes some time, but works pretty well. You may need to do this several times before the name is gone. I generally do it once or twice and try again another day so that the plastic does not get discolored. I've learned some interesting things over the years thanks to my collecting fetish.
I would love to see (hear?) another 2D fighting game episode of Retroforce. As always, there's so much to talk about that the first episode barely scratched the surface (In a good way!)
Shoot, I deleted it. Sorry. :(
I can resurrect it, though ... I may post it next week! :)
Alright, so I wasn't the only person who played 'On The Ball'! That game was great. That and Uniracers. I rented it a bunch of times when it was originally out, and then found it in an EB or something a few years ago, and it hasn't left my SNES since! It had the best music, which would be stuck in my head for days.
Also, when you guys were talking about games not feeling so awesome anymore (the feeling of an epic adventure at the end), I had this thought:
Sometimes I think we all believe the older games to be really epic because when we first experienced them, we had not yet played that many games and had less experience. So everything felt like a big deal. Whereas now, hundreds of games later, things seem like less of a big deal, because we're older and more cynical and jaded or whatever.
That and kids get excited over everything and we were no different. I'm not saying they weren't awesome, I'm just saying, if you were at the age NOW that you were THEN, the games of today might seem more impressive to you.
By the way, the opening of this episode, with the digitised voices thing, had me in stitches :D
LOVE LIVE EPYX!
:)
Again, as I said in Topher’s original post, I never had an SNES; I had a Genesis instead. But I certainly wouldn’t mind another episode...it doesn’t really matter what topic the RFGO! gang is covering; I’ll listen in anyway!
There is just so much. Oh, and I'll ask again, a Dreamcast episode, please!
