(Man, that is one sexy picture.)
So anyway, how's everyone been doing? Good? I hope so so. I also hope that most of you have spending a lot of time with the new Super Mario Galaxy. Although, if you have yet to become enraptured by the House of N's latest plumber outing, then I highly suggest that you either: A, go out and buy a copy right now, or B, admit to yourself that you don't like fun. Either choice is fine with us, but we certainly hope that you make the choice that involves having fun -- something we do here on the show quite a bit. Speaking of the show ...
Highlights!
- Super Dodge Ball is sill a classic, Volleyball, not so much
- Chad rains on my Blue's Journey parade :(
- XBLA celebrates its 100th game with Screwjumper! Hold on ... really?
- Shrek+Bump mapping = Marketing genius!
- Are you a "Grrl Gamer?" Then take special note of Rev's latest rant
- Please direct all hate mail for said rant to retroforce@destructoid.com :)
- Chad's portrait is watching you
- Sorry Peach and Daisy, but it's Rosalina FTW!
Please be warned that, due to the awesomeness that is Mario, this week's episode runs a little long. Like, an hour and forty-five minutes long. Hopefully it will be just the thing to get you through the never ending drama that you'll have to endure when you go see your crazy families this weekend. As for me, I intend to spend the holiday as I always do, punching out hobos down at the soup kitchen. See you there!
(I think the show may be located right about HERE.)

The length of the show should make up for that week we didn't get any RFGO love.
Also, kick ass image.

I dunno. I see the angle (in paraphrase/summary) "how can I respect you if you dress sexy and then want to talk about equality". In a modern rational world, why should expression/highlighting of sexuality discount rational discourse? Sure, it'd feel ridiculous talking world politics with a Hilary Clinton in a Princess Leia costume, but if nothing's stoping me from putting on a Kratos costume, you can't really fault HER for that.
I guess my beef is with the ideal society of equality being everyone distilling themselves down to Orwellian uniformity and declaring, then, a state and system of societal equality . . .

I don't know I really agree with Rev. Being female myself it's annoying not only at the attention 'sexy' girl gamers get by flaunting their selves every two minutes but opportunities too. A lot of these 'grrl gamers' end up getting a lot of attention and invited to trade shows, write for websites etc etc jus because they are pretty.
I'd rather listen to her talk about video games than see them show me a picture of themselves posting in front of a sign or showing off their latest t-shirt!? I mean wtf? Pointless.
11/20/2007 20:40
That's the point -- you DON'T put on a Kratos costume and flaunt it around every eight seconds. Or at least, the vast majority of male gamers don't. As Atheistium said, most of the grrl gamers inextricably link flaunting their boobies with personal gain and demanding to be taken seriously -- something which, if most male gamers did it, would seem opportunistic and hypocritical.
I could name names, but you can't tell me that all (or even most) of the hot gamer grrls who are successful in the industry are particularly good writers or commentators, or even that they have anything significant to say other than the constant contradictory cries of "respect me!"

Dyson, you are friends with Daren, from GFW?
Also great episode guys, to bad no Colette. Galaxy is awesome!!!

I feel you there.
I guess my experience is from a different angle than what you're talking about. The women I know in the games industry (which I guess shouldn't be confused with Grrl Gamers) don't happen to have a displayed need to sexualize their persona as a gamer. They unquestionably "game" and they got the job on their merits as an applicant. I know it, I was there. Given that entrance into things gaming, I wouldn't find fault in the occasional cosplay, Occasional being the key, I think.
Rant In, Rant Out. Great show guys!

I've beaten Mario Galaxy and my fiancee and I are working together to get the rest of the stars... as of this typing we're at 94....wait... 95....nope 96. I have to say I totally agree with you guys on a lot of points you made with Galaxy. The level design is mind blowing in this game. I still stand by my 2.5D comment ^_^
However, I found in later stages that the faults of the camera perspective rear its ugly head and make some of the later stages unnecessarily annoying. Chad, you may disagree with me, I recalled you guys mentioned you're not too far in the game.
I hadn't thought too much about swimming mechanics in Nintendo games until you mentioned it in the podcast. Nintendo can't do swimming levels in 3D right.... you're totally right!
Isn't the music in this game awesome? I think it's Koji Kondo's best work. Also kudos to the other guy who did music on it too (I forgot his name but saw it in the credits).
Finally, don't feel bad about hating on Mario 64. I was never a fan of it either. Although I will fully admit it was because of the move to 3D and the analog stick on the N64 controller. In fact I actually liked Mario Sunshine better. I looked at Sunshine as kind of a side story versus is full fledged sequel; think of it as Mario Goes on Vacation.
Okay, finally part 2. I liked NSMB for the DS but I felt like it was still a pale imitation of the older games. I would still like to see a sequel to it and give the guys another chance...
My ideal Mario sequel would have some new powerups and some old (like the tanooki suit and hammer suit) and bring the koopa kids back. Fuck Bowser jr.
Okay I wrote a mini novella. Sorry about that. You guys are my favorite podcast. I've never agreed with any gaming journalists more than you guys.

But I think the thing that folks like us really missed in those games, and something that Galaxy has brought back, is the focus on playing the game. No longer do you have to control the camera or some backpack. In 2-D Mario games, you didn't have to micro manage the system -- you just played the game. Galaxy is a return to that, and I'm very happy for it, too.
