Dyson
Happy Monday everybody, and welcome to the final episode in our Zelda discussion. This week's show happens to be one of the longest shows we've ever recorded and, honestly, it should have been broken up in into two more separate episodes for a grand total of three Zelda shows. Well, it wasn't, so I graciously present you with this whoppingly large two hour podcast about the little guy in a green cap and tunic (not Tingle!).
Highlights!
- Hamsa and Husky are full of win and awesome
- Topher reviews the 1200 ($!15) Point Puzzles and Yaris Car Commercial games
- Chad sings Bolero of Fire, melts the heart of Satan in the process
- Dyson correction: I haven't beaten Majora's Mask (forgot, sorry)
- If you loved Twilight Princess, this is the show for you
- If you hated Twilight Princess, this is the show for you
If you'll notice, the last two highlights have to do with the love/hate relationship that some of us had with
Zelda: TP. Mostly we hated it, but Chad really loved it (and, yes Tristero, he did an amaazing job defending it), but we don't really fight about it at all, we just state our points of view. If y'all care to listen, check it out on our
podcast page.

1. The Four Sword
2. Labrynna
3. Jabun
4. Seven
2) Oracle of ages Takes place in Labrynna
3) The Pearl is given to you by Jabun.
4) The Number is eight.
Oracle of Ages had the Harp Of Ages. When you beat both Oracle games you fight a not-fully-resurrected Ganon. It wasn't a bad fight. I forget exactly what the ending is like, even though I just played it in August.
I thought the Oracle dungeons were okay, the Ages ones were better. You can tell Oracle of Seasons started out as a port of the original Legend of Zelda; the first dungeon has the same map, the same boss, and the entrance is a tree on an island. If nothing else the Oracle games are noteworthy for another opportunity to play around with the Roc's feather. Jumping!
You can actually use the bug-catching net in A Link To The Past to reflect Agahnim's shots.
Dammit, I need Phantom Hourglass. Might have to take advantage of Toys R Us this week.
The big thing about the introduction of the new art style in Wind Waker was it followed that Gamecube trailer with Ganondorf fighting Link in a realistic style. That, and the first blurry images were leaked without much explanation of what exactly the game was trying to do. It was a bombshell. Thankfully all those fears and bitching were totally misguided.
The song you hummed was the one that warps you to the Temple of Time, the Prelude of Light.
Now, no more comments about that :)
All of those ocarina songs were great.
Ah, yes! I knew I was humming the wrong song all of these years. Regardless, they're all great! :)
Goddammit, he beat me to it again.
One glass = A Rupee.
The Gamecube controls never gave me a problem, personally, though I know what you mean about them not seeming as good as Wind Waker. You've never played a 3-D Sonic game if you're calling TP's controls crappy, though.
I agree with the story being generic and hardly memorable at all. It never had much of a point. It's odd, because there were a few individual characters that were charming, most notably Midna, but it never coalesced into an adventure that you really cared about. There didn't seem to be much motivation for Link or the bad guys.
All that said, the dungeons were a blast, and some of the new items were fantastic. Chad mentioned the dragon boss as a highlight, and I have to agree- that was probably the single greatest moment in the game. A few of the other boss battles were great as well, including the multipart final one.
I think you hit on the main problem, though, which was the delays. That really made the final game disappointing. I enjoyed it, but at the end I felt I liked Wind Waker better, for all its flaws. TP was a prettier but less polished Ocarina Of Time, a game I already have three copies of. I really should play TP again, though, and see how I feel.
bolero of fire, schmolero of fire...it's all gravy, homie :)
i remember when i used to try to play mainstream songs on the ocarina in OoT. my favorite was the offspring's "pretty fly for a white guy." oh, the memories...
I agree with Topher 100% about Wind Waker, it's my second favorite Zelda game. I made a couple of snide comments about the whole Celda bull, but was one of the early advocates for it in my area. The only part that bothered me was the dungeon with Makar (annoying bastard) and the Triforce gathering, and that only bugged me because you had to get some random number of rupee's, it was like 386 or something.
The complaints about Minish Cap being short as hell are true in my opinion as that was the only hit against it. If it had been longer and maybe a bit harder I would have absolutely loved it. That seems to be a recent trend in Zelda games of late though, they're all really short. Phantom Hourglass appears to be short as well though I've only beaten the first dungeon and I'm loving it.
I think both the overworld and the dungeons are necessary parts of the Zelda series, I like the openness of the overworld and I like the idea that if the more you dig the more things open up for you and the more places you can go and whatnot. However, without the dungeons to pull it all together it seems empty. I liked Dyson's analogy to chapters, the dungeons felt like you progressed something as a bit of the story unraveled each time you completed a chapter in most cases and the exploration of the overworld with the new item was like a break between chapters when you set the book down and just wanna go have fun.
Another awesome podcast and I certainly love the lengthier ones as I have no life and this is one of the few things I look forward to each week.
...damn my late work schedule keeping me from listening immediately...
...I want the prizes.
When you guys were complaining about TP's water temple, I couldn't even remember it for about 5 minutes, like I blocked it out or something. When I did remember it, I recalled it had a weird mirror image quality to it, one side a reflection of the other, but I don't remember it being that hard. I might have thought it was a good challenge, I don't know.
I was hoping Chad would be able to defend TP's story a bit better, though, as it stands out (to me) as one of the more deep stories of Zelda games, mostly because it wasn't just Gannon and Zelda, there was the whole Midna, Zant, Twilight thing. Was it really that hard to grasp? I'll try to summarize it:
Hyrule is threatened when Zant, upstart ruler of the Twilight Realm, attacks it and attempts to cover it in twilight. Link joins forces with Midna, deposed former ruler of the Twilight World, to try to defeat Zant, with a little help from an imprisoned Zelda and the Master Sword.
After collecting the Shadow armour to stop the infestation of twilight-ness and assembling the Mirror to get to and defeat Zant, it is revealed that a banished Gannon was behind Zant's bid for power. Gannon is subsequently defeated, of course. End.
Also, in 'A Link to the Past' you turn into a bunny in the dark world for some reason. Why do you need an explanation as to why you turn into a wolf in this game's version of the dark world? (For the record, wasn't it that most humans turned to ghosts, whereas Link didn't get ghosted because he had the triforce of courage hidden within him?)
"There are 3 pieces of the Fused Shadow, and 4 pieces of the mirror. But you only collect 3 pieces of the mirror (you get 1 automatically), so I guess 7 is technically correct. I was just thinking about the ones you collect."
I assure you that we'll make it even more confusing next week!
ANC, contact us in the usual manner ;)
(Hi Lauren!)
I still don't remember the water temple =/, anyway i agree with the story in general, when i think about it TP's story it does feel more deep, however, while i was playing it, i don't think it hooked me, surprised or something, when i found out about ganon i was "oh.. ganon", not sure what was missing though.
And in link to the past i think you displayed what was in your inside or something like that when you went to the dark world, so different people turned into different things, in link's case, it was a bunny.
The bottom line is: Don't Give Up, Robots!
J/K. I just wanted to thank the cast + the Rev. for the BEST retroforceGO i've heard yet! Not only did I exclaim to myself "EXACTLY!" when Collete explained her distaste for the art work in Twilight Princess. But I was actually second guessing my distaste for the game after hearing Chad's argument! Will I try it again, who knows!
I'm giving the show my best review ever...
5 Dolphins playing guitars made of unicorn bones on a pile of Zelda 2 carts!!!!!!
Don't let the Water Temple and everything previous taint your views of this game.
For me, the dungeons are brilliantly designed, and (most) of the boss fights had very satisfying, epic feels to them. That is, after you get past the water temple, just do that, and it gets exponentially better.
2 Hookshots?? I mean, come on! I've never posted anything before, but people hating on TP, I just had to say something.
Also, Rupee.
:-)
