RetroforceGO!: Episode 19: Zelda: The early years photo

So, basically, the show last night went well and we talked about Zelda till the wee hours of the night. Chad regaled us with wild tales of Poe hunting, while Topher gave us the entomological background of tektites and leevers. I easily explained why I'm called Dyson "The Smasher of Pots" Grigsby by displaying my favorite rupee hunting method, and Colette cheered us all on while wearing her daring, but cute as a button, Link pajamas.

And, of course, none of this is what you'll be hearing today.

Highlights!

  • RFGO! is like family, yo
  • Never cheapen "The Five"
  • Tetris Splash gets our first Retroforce-NO!
  • Rev NOT talks about how you're all NOT cheapening gaming through save-states
  • ZELDA!!ZELDA!!ZELDA!!ZELDA!!ZELDA!!
  • (Psst, Toph. I think you meant to say Minish Cap)

And there you have it, another show brought to you by the fine folks here at RFGO! As always, check us out on the podcast page for some one-on-one listening time, or just make the leap into this millennium by subscribing to us via iTunes.

(I chose Japanese, but I'm sure that's no big shocker ;)

Japanese ad was so much better, but that's technically for Link to the Past, not the original.

@madninja: Chad is the keeper of the dolphins, and I have learned that it is best not to question him.

The Japanese commercial is definitely awesome because of the ridiculous dance, but the American spot is the first commercial use of nerdcore rap... it's so hard to choose...

Perhaps this should be a Debate to the Death?

BTW, in the American commercial, I love how the Zelda title screen says, "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA SOLD SEPARATELY" as if that text would actually be in the game. I also love that the game they put into the NES is a gray cartridge, when we ALL know that Zelda was gold. :)

Gah!

There's 24 masks in Majora's Mask, excluding the Fierce Deity Mask. When you use the Fierce Deity Mask you turn into Fierce Deity Link also known as Oni Link. The blue haired kid's name is Kafei and he's found in the laundry area until the end of his quest on Day 3 where he can be found near the thieves hideout so you can finish the Anju/Kafei quest (or the longest side quest in Majora's Mask).

Majora's Mask is my favorite game (yeah I know "HE MUST BE INSANE!"), so I just had to clarify that... because I love this podcast. This also finally forced me to join here even though I've been reading for a year or two now. Back to being a lurker!

@Reaprar:

So you must've played it on the Gamecube collection, like I did :) That totally sucks what happened to you, I hate when saves get corrupted. Give it another shot some day!

My brother is hogging the PC, I'll listen to this soon enough.

I have just listened why Posiden did not release the final dolphin and I understand. I have thirty minutes left and I thought I thought I was the only person who gave up on Majora's Mask. Now I need to beat it but I want to play PH so bad and beat Metroid Prime 3.

I agree with MarioHammer...Majora's Mask is the most win stuffed into a Zelda game. Plus save states are for pussies. Nübs. If you beat a game with save states you didn't beat the game. Kid's these days are weak and drink skim milk.

^_^

Oh, BTW, since you guys were talking about beating the original without a sword-- did you know you could beat the childhood in Ocarina of Time without the sword?

When Mido's all blocking your way in the beginning, pull up slowly on the left side of the cartridge. When you pull it up enough, you'll disappear and run through him. Then just put the cartridge back in before you leave through the log.

It was a pain getting more Deku Sticks sometimes, but it was pretty sweet.

-Try playing around with the different control setups available in Sin & Punishment. I like Type 3.
-Lost Levels was also included in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on Game Boy Color, albeit missing some of the secret levels.
-Tael is the other fairy in Majora's Mask, not Navi. (Remember the "Tatl/Tael" pun.)
-Link's upward/downward stab from Zelda II is an invaluable addition to Smash Bros. / Soul Calibur II. I've never beaten it without a Game Genie (for the final stretch of the game,) and I used my friend's strategy guide.
-Blue/Red Candle labeling was reversed :P
-The Water Temple actually got nerfed in Master Quest. You get the longshot very early. The other dungeons were much harder, though. Of course, trying to make the Water Temple any harder was doomed to failure. I love the twisted corridor in the Forest Temple.

Link's Awakening is my favorite Zelda game. I loved the story and the sense of humor. The dungeons are fantastic as well-- number 7, the tower, is freaking amazing. The game has so many secrets, too. And there were all those cameos, including Dr. (Will) Wright cameo as Mr. Write, complete with the Sim City music!

The music was great too; Ballad of the Windfish still brings a tear to my eye ;_;

Ganon's Tower in A Link To The Past was a total bitch the first time, and it's still no cakewalk. The best part is fighting the first three bosses over again and totally fucking their shit up with your gold sword and silver arrows. It's like fighting the robot masters in Mega Man for a second time, ecxcept not kind of annoying.

Now that I listened to the full thing I like it besides a couple of errors about Majora's Mask (Which is a game I'm overprotective of as it's my favorite) and a couple of "what was it called"'s through out I enjoyed reminiscing about the earlier years of the series. I had just watched Gametrailers Zelda Retrospective today as well.

I think I'm too obsessed with knowing stupid little trivial things about games. Like the little nit-picking about MM, and memorizing the map to most of them. When Topher was talking about the graveyard in A Link to the Past I drew it up in my head and couldn't remember it until you guys deciphered it was actually the Lost Woods. Oh and that's not Dampe, those are the Lumber jack brothers that live near there. Unless I'm missing something.

Overall I liked this a lot and can't wait for the next one so you guy's can talk about my second favorite Zelda title, Wind Waker. Yeah I love the black sheep.

Nope, I'd confused the graveyard for the one in Minish Cap. When I finished Minish Cap, I immediately went back and played Link to the Past again right after it, so I can't keep track sometimes.

@RFGO (or dtoider):
I forgot to ask...
Besides the main Legend of Zelda theme (Overworld) that we all know and love, which other piece of music sticks out in your head when you think of the franchise? (perhaps you can elaborate more in next weeks podcast?...)

When I think of the Legend of Zelda, I always find myself humming either the Hyrule Temple theme (Zelda II and SSBM) or the Lost Woods theme (OoT). Actually, from 1998 to 1999 my brain was marinated in OoT, so any theme from that game is ( o Y o )'s.

Welcome out into the light, mariohammer! Actually, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker were directed by the same guy, Eiji Aonuma. Maybe that's where the love comes in?

ANC: I think that the tower dungeon, 7, is the one I've been stuck on this whole time. For some reason, I want to beat these games without help. Except for the Master Quest, though, that shit is too much.

NSNick, no I didn't know that. Can this be replicated in the GC version, or is it specific to the cart Zelda?

Topcow, thanks! And Reaprar, we are watching you.

@Dyson:

The Tower is indeed a bitch.... at least the first several times. On my last playthrough I breezed through it for some reason despite not having played the game for a while. But the first time it was beautiful and hard. Such a neat dungeon. Keep at it, and have fun with the revenge of Turtle Rock right after.

I believe it's only the cart version, short of using GameShark or what have you. I remember hearing about it shortly after beating OoT for the first time, so I tried it, and it worked. And also didn't fuck my cart up. :P

I just finished listening, thanks for answering my question! A few notes:

1. I didn't include Topher because I know he lives way the hell on the other side of the country. If he wants to fly out here to play Four Swords Adventures, he's welcome to.
2. I didn't tell Colette that I live down here in Pasadena because I just moved here a month ago. I'm telling you guys now!

I wanna come play Four Swords! I live in LA too!

I moved here a year and a half ago, but still don't know a lot of people.

I have a question for part two next week: With Nintendo saying that TP is the last Zelda "as we know it" I wonder what you guys think they will do with the Zelda series? Do you guys think it's a good thing or a bad thing?

By the way, I LOVE this podcast. It's one of my favorites and how I discovered Destructoid :)
