RetroforceGO!: Episode 12: Sequels we're sick of photo

Happy Monday, my little Retroforcers. Is your week starting off as well as you had hoped? Considering that it’s Monday, I doubt it.

Hopefully, this latest installment of RetroforceGO! will alleviate the animosity that a hard day in the salt mines can engender. In other, more normal words: work sucks, here’s a new show.

Highlights!

  • Almost the BEST WEEK EVAR!!
  • Who replaced regular Chad with Evil Chad?
  • Like heroin, Top Ten lists are so passé
  • Colette has something to say about hedgehogs
  • Sorry Chad, the pen has spoken. WRONG!!
  • Gaming is not a sport (Ask Rev about that)
  • Jim Sterling is going to hate me forever
  • Lets just assume that there is a CONTEST every week, mmkay?
So that’s it in a nutshell, folks. Hope this new Sunday/Monday format isn’t too painful on you guys. If it is, well, sorry, it’s completely my fault and you can yell at me here. But in the meantime, enjoy this week’s show and prepare yourselves for next week’s. I have a feeling that it will be the most epic BEST WEEK EVAR!!, ever.

OK, so I'm still listening, but Crackdown over GTA? Seriously? Crackdown was a horrible game. You can just download the demo and you'd get the experience of the entire game for free. Granted the time limit is capped, but still, the game is so short you might as well just play the demo a few times.

@Kif- 1 word. Multiplayer. :)

Multiplayer lost it's charm just as quickly for me. Me and my friend shot each other with rockets, had fights at the top of the Agency, and completed all the missions in now less than 30 minutes. We played it once and never touched it again. There is no multiplayer. If there was more to do than 2 player rocket tag and races, I'd agree. but it's not multiplayer. It's just watered down co-op which pretends to be multiplayer.

Out of a sense of good sportsmanship, I will refrain from entering the sound effects contest. Somebody step up to the plate though! Those were great choices.

On a completely unrelated note, on the topic of new games that are still hardcore, I really enjoyed the Maximo games as an extension of the Ghosts N' Goblins series. They were so deliciously difficult. I think it had been fifteen years since I last gave the middle finger to my screen and yelled, "Land on the damn cliff already!" I was also totally surprised by Devil May Cry 3. This comes from someone whose bread is buttered with 8-bit and 16-bit games. That game was extremely tough and a complete blast to actually succeed at. My fingers have never moved so fast, not even during the final levels of Ninja Gaiden or Zombies Ate My Neighbors.

There are still hard games around though. Dead Rising was a pretty hard game actually, since it did drop you in the deep end right at the beginning. I died a few times before my stats were high enough to keep going. I don't like it nowadays. You don't collect health, or even things which could cure you that resemble health (Herbs, first aid kits). No, just hide like a pussy until your health comes back and you'll be fine. No restricted save points, just save anywhere, you'll be good.

Kif:
I restarted Earthbound, and I've gotten reasonably far in it, but scheduling horseshit (namely, school and BioShock) will probably prevent me from finishing it in the near future.

Given the game's sense of humor, though, I have to wonder: how is Mother 3 supposed to make anyone CRY? Based on what I've now seen, the series seems pretty damn surreal and nonsensical. Not so much with the tragedy.

Well fine, I'll post what I think I know

Pac-Man/Puck-Man (Pac-Man)
???
Simon Belmont (Castlevania)
Mario/Jump Man (Donkey Kong)

It's really bugging the hell out of me I can't get the second one. It's obviously an old arcade sound effect, but I can't recall what for.

Colette was wrong about Onimusha not being on the Xbox. They took Onimusha, shined up the graphics a little, put in the usual zomg new weapons/attacks, and released it on the Xbox as Genma Onimusha in 2002. I picked it up at EB a few months ago for like 4 bucks.

And the best part is, it's freaking backwards compatible.

Phew! Just got home from Real Job.

Wedge, you have three out of four, so no hints for you! Although, I'm pretty sure that someone else here knows exactly what number two is ...
And by the way, you should listen before posting, we covered XBLA just fine ;)

Kif, I haven't started EB yet, I actually forgot that we said we'd give it another go. I will, though, but this is Dyson's Games to be Replayed list:

Phantasy Star 1, 2, 3, 4; Secret of Evermore; Super Metroid (in under 2 hours); Goonies 2; Bionic Commando; Stinger; BioShock; Final Fantasy 3-SNES version.

It may take me a little time to get to EB, but I'll do it goddamnit. Oh, and there still are plenty of hard games around, but I when I think of hard games I think of ones that are hard for reasons like: 3 continues only, limited amount of players, and stuff like that.

Games like Ninja Gaiden Black are too hard for me, but I can keep continuing forever if I really need to, thereby making it an easier overall task. Don't take that as a blanket statement about all new games, though, I know that there are many exceptions to the rule.

Sorry about there not being a link, folks. I guess I just assumed that everyone knew where the podcast page was, or that y'all had subscribed to it via iTunes (it would be cool if you did, and then gave us an awesome review or at least some five star love). Thank goodness for beedog!

Thanks Suff0cating, I knew that I was right!

And thanks to Niero for his technical robotic black magic!

Love-O-gram for Mr. Hairdo!

On GTA, I can see the technological part, the whole "OMG my city is in GTA" or "OMG i can visit lots of places and do lots of stuff", but seriously, looking ahead, i guess GTA 5 will be just like 4 or SA just with a bigger area, better graphics and a few new interactive things, like i dunno, play tennis, baseball or something like that.

And does it even have an ending? if it does, does it only have one? Cause i don't see the point in a game where "you can do whatever you want" when anything you do that isn't related to the main missions will have no effect on the story.

Anyway, Dyson i forgive you for the missing link, after all it didn't affect me =) (itunes subscription ftw!)

I have to say, I don't know why the only gameplay element you guys seem to care about in GTA games is beating on hookers.. I mean, I played through all of them, and I never once killed.. or even 'hired' a hooker. Well, I might have run one over from time to time, but that's just my crappy driving skills, not some intentional prostitute-ocide.

I really don't think Crackdown has more story than GTA games, though. Crackdown was what? "There are gangs, kill them please. Oh, and at the end, you're evil. But you didn't know." Whereas, in GTA games, the story is very simplistic in that it's the main character's rise to power in the underworld or desire for revenge against someone. Of course, the story is only present in the cut scenes and main missions, so if you don't play those or are watching someone who just likes to dick around, I can see people thinking there's no story there.

It depends on who's playing. If you just dick around and drive aimlessly, there's no point or story. Isn't that the point of non-linear games? That you're allowed to stray from the story?

Oh, and I have to say, Dyson.. do you really think you could go out and do all the stuff in a GTA game? That would mean you live in a world where all the car doors are unlocked, guns lay in the streets for you to pick up and use expertly instantly, you can fly a helicopter without training, and you can get away with any crime simply by getting a token pick-up that gets the cops off of your back. So even though GTA is set in modern day cities, it's obviously just as much of a fantasy as WoW or something else.

Amethystine at 08/21/2007 14:01
Part2: Of course, the fact that it's simply a fantasy about being a criminal is fairly lame/tame in comparison to something like.. I don't know, BIOSHOCK? Also, my Limited Edition BioShock is waiting for me at EB, I should go get it. But I listened to your podcast first!

entrager wins! send you r info to the retrophone @ retroforce@gmail.com.

do i think that i could do everything that i can do in gta in real life, not really. but the main premise is the same: regular guy goes and does whatever he wants. at least in crackdown i get to be a super cop, who can do things normal people can't. regardless, i guess it just comes down to what type a person you are. i've never really felt compelled to just be a thug in real life, but i've certainly wished that i could pick up a car and whip it at some idiots head.

your delaying of the goodness of bioshock is awesome, your loyalty to the cause shall never be questioned ;)

Reverend Anthony- I'm dying to start playing Earthbound again too. Yeah, I'm one of the many hoping to see Mother 3 in the states, thought I'm sure it'll never happen. As far as people crying at the end of it, I suspect that might have a lot to do with the music, which you can buy on itunes and it's really good. P.S. Nice avatar. Is that Beat Takeshi blowing his brains out? Battle Royale? Nice one.

Jeese you guys sounded like the media pundits that are always bashing on GTA as the "hooker beating" game. I couldn't believe one of you actually said Crackdown had more story than GTA at one point. It was obvious none of you had ever really played any of the games. Their stories are one of their few high points actually, though the mission setup is a bit awkward for them.

Also that was the most moot Rev Rant ever. Games are not sports, but sports ARE games. I don't see how this elevates sports to anything more "serious" than video games. Obviously they are viewed this way by media, what with the huge retarded overpaying industry they are. However it's total bullshit, and it SHOULDN'T be that way.

And on that note... Chad is a Yankees fan? My whole world just came crumbling down. Go M's!
