We argued about it, we pushed each other around -- heck, Colette even lost some hair from Dyson’s swift, almost ninja-like blows -- but we finally did it: the Retroforce gang compiled a list of the ten best retro franchises that need a major comeback.
And we are talking franchises here, folks, not any of those pansy games that didn’t have the cojones to produce any sequels.
From Battletoads to Maniac Mansion, we will discuss the best franchises left in the dust tonight and which ones really need to reappear on a console or handheld near you. What games made the final cut? Will any of your old favorites be discussed? Are you still knocking stuff off your desks in excitement?
Feel free to leave us any comments before we record or drop a few of your favorite old franchises you would love to see mentioned (you never know, if we see something good the list can still be changed …er … unless you mention Aero the Acrobat … yeah, if you mention that the list will not be changed … sorry).
Check back tomorrow to download the full show and don’t forget: you have to listen to win!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
LAZING BLAZERS.
Then again, Aero the Acrobat was pretty sweet. Right? Right?
And they should really make Gizmo a free DLC character for Viva Pinata! When you'd drop him into the water or feed him at night... ohh give it to me now!
also, a Bubble Bath Babes revival would be tits (no pun intended.)
Jet Set Radio is another unsung hero, with great rhythm & beats, it caught onto various fans that enjoyed something different. And if it ever made a comeback, it would be in a big way.
P.N. 03 - Capcom's one trick pony. A bit like Space Channel 5, but less vibrant in color, and higher in difficulty. Just grazing the screen with a lady like Vanessa, and gracefully escaping mecha-esque battles like no other. Putting it lightly, Mega Man in female form. There i said it. If they were to return to this entry, it would be an interesting venture, who knows what they could explore.
Panzer Dragoon - Orta was a neat idea, with tough controls, and critical timing in order to survive. Its design brought back the rpg-action genre alive and well.
Gunvalkyrie - (might say its PD's lil sister.. insanely tough, but went MIA along with JSR)
Tydizon makes me feel ashamed for forgetting the Streets of Rage series.
as far as a PC adventure game revival, i would definitely cast my vote for Full Throttle. Polecats ftw.
1941, 1942, 1943, or a related title.
Captain Commando.
But fuck yeah, Final Fight/Streets of Rage 2D ftw!
Suikoden (everything after 2 was garbage)
Sunset Riders (i know it didn't have a sequel..but any game where you sleep with prostitutes to get power-ups should be mentioned)
Before the ESRB and BBFC were put in place, was there any difference in packaging from region to region for handheld games?
I ask because I'm trying to collect all the Metroid games, and the only complete copy of Metroid II that I can find is from and online UK store.
If you're able to answer this, thanks in advance!
Streets of Rage: Remake is definitely worth checking out. it takes the best from all three games and mashes it together for our enjoyment.
if you're a SEGA or a NINTENDO or even a MICROSOFT, and you notice that gamers are developing their own fangames, isn't that a sign that perhaps they should consider reviving?
this could work both ways. it could either give us a great game, or a not so great game. (sorry chad)
I want team/ resource/ research management over multiple missions spanning the globe and multiple months!!!!!!!!
Needs moar goddamn 2D platformers. I'm sick of this 3D stuff, since it's (for the most part) unimaginative and boring. Bring me some original 2D Sonic on the XBLA and 2D Mario on Wiiware. game.
*Just wants an excuse for another Ristar game to be made.
GRIM FANDANGO 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously though I'd have to say the Donkey Kong Country games developed by Rare. Rare knew how to make some kick ass platformers back in the '90s, I spent many of my formative years in a basement playing those games.
You know, besides the franchises everybody knows like SMB, Metroid and the like.
The fact that the mentioned Ristar makes me want to hug you and then push you away and awkwardly talk about sports.
I love that game. :)
Or a DS Baldur's Gate would be cool, cos then I might actually finish one. None of that Playstation nonsense mind, I'm talking 2D and turnbased.
Come to think of it, an MMO Carmen Sandiago. But then, I have had a fair bit to drink.
Chrono Trigger
Kid Icarus
The fact that you mentioned all the Sierra "Quest" games makes me just want to hug you (no unnecessary sports talk needed).
I used to want to name my children Sierra, Graham, Rosella, and Roger.
In fact, I think I still will. :)
*hug*
...
So, how about those Denver Broncos?
...
Yeah, I know jack about american sports, big surprise!
is another example of a good revival.
well, you get the point.
Kif- New Crash Bandicoot game coming this year
kwaselo-New Earthbound game currently being tranlated by fans.
Chad- Please share your thoughts on the one LucasArts SCUMM system game that really deserved a sequel never got one. Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. Pure awesoem.
Other games that deserve a second life, Metal Warriors for the SNES, Vib Ribbon for the PS1, Archon for the C64, and of course Bionic Commando for the NES.
I have never met a person who doesn't hunger for a worthy sequel to Bionic Commando for the NES. Not one person on planet Earth.
I remember memorizing the hoverbike level so I could hit the warp every time. So much frustration, yet so rewarding in the end.
I thought the games we mentioned had to have sequels. ;)
No game deserves a sequel like Grim Fandango.
If we're going through that route, I'd like to mention almost every game Treasure has ever done.
I'm still holding out for a Alien Solider 2, Guardian Heroes 2, Radiant Silvergun 2, and Ikaruga 2.
Ristar
Double Dragons
Ghosts 'N Goblins (Maximo games don't count)
There NEEDS to be an official revival of Seiken Densetsu 3; One of the best of the, now laughable, Secret of Mana series... NEVER released to the states!
While we're on the topic, Sqeenix should hand the franchise over to someone who can actually DO something with it, other than make each pending release suck.
Oh, and moar Kunio-kun games, or I'll punch somebody's grandmother.
You keep settin' them up, and I keep knocking them down!
Duck Tales 2 is awesome. But Guardian Heroes Advance smells.
Adventure Island
Lost Vikings (I know there was one 4 years ago, but that was just a GBA port of the original so it doesn't count)
Suck on those, Tron
