Retro goggles do nothing: Dark Presence and digitized actors photo

What you see above is a screenshot of an absolutely brand-spanking-new fighting game called Dark Presence, being developed by Galloping Ghost. If it looks a tad dated, that's because Galloping Ghost has decided to use digitized actors, instead of 3D models or sprites, a technique I haven't seen since Mortal Kombat 3. And that was in 1995.

The game will feature eight different characters and over 150,000 frames of animation, which Galloping Ghost boasts is the highest number of animation frames of "any other game ever." It took over two years to greenscreen and capture all the moves in the game, and Galloping Ghost admits that it's "easy to see why other companies just go with 3D characters."

If the "Features" tab on  Dark Presence's official Web site are anything to go by, the game will feature the most realistic game reactions ever seen in a fighting game, as well as a fully fleshed-out narrative. For Galloping Ghost's sake, I really hope that's true: even if its the best game ever made, those digitized actors are going to be a hard pill to swallow. I try to be positive most of the time, but I can't see this turning out well for Galloping Ghost. Is there some sort of niche arcade market that totally digs on digitized actors that I'm not aware of?

The game should hit arcades later this year (although there's already a sequel, Conquering Light, in the works).

As a joke it's pretty good. as a game...not so much.

The reason this cannot work is that the lighting is always fixed and can never be changed, so the characters will always look out of place.

But retrogoggles really do make me want to play it, just for a laugh.

I've been waiting for someone to do a new game with digitized actors forever. I will buy, unless it's total shit.

This is one of those games you need to be high or drunk to enjoy.

For some reason, I kinda like the homage to MK. As long as it's self-aware and not too serious, lulz will be had.

I've been saying they should do this for ages. Although it seems they need better lighting equipment/costumes/models. But I'm all for this. I mean how much more real do you want your graphics to be?

Releasing this in arcades is the worse thing that they can do. Number 1 only a small amount of people get to play it because there are no arcades around anymore (crys for a second), second it is not going to make any money that way. They need to release it on the pc and see where it can go. Other than that I want to play it for the memories when MK was good.

Oh god, I remember watching this game progress through production a few years ago. I can't believe they've actually made it this far...

" DARK PRESENCE is a 2-D fighting game unlike anything you’ve seen before. Filmed in High Definition and running in 1080p (1920x1080) at 30 frames per second. DARK PRESENCE is slated to hit arcades in 2009. To promote DARK PRESENCE we will be touring and demoing the game everywhere, so contact your local arcade and have them contact us. With many features never before attempted and a frame animation count bigger than any other game ever, we hope you will see the amount of effort and detail we have put into making
DARK PRESENCE. For everyone who has emailed us over the course of production we thank you for all the kind words of support. "

If this means that it is ONLY going to be in arcades.. yeah, sorry, you've not won, sir.

it doesn't help that all of the actors look like what you'd find growing in some community collage's film department. whereas the digital background sets belong in 1993 along with Myst. these poor people probably have no idea how terrible it all looks.

Did anyone read or look at the character list for the game? Some of them look like guilty gear rip offs... One looks like Chipp if he had his hair down. One dude looks like Johnny.

Also. I'll beat on Kyla.

I cannot wait to see these extremely awesome looking characters in full 1080p.

Seriously though, this entire website looks like a mockup I would do as a web development student working on his senior project.

After looking at the screen shots, I don't believe it's real. There are pictures of two people posed in interaction, and that's just not how it works. Unless they know something we don't. *ominous music*

You know what would be absolutely brilliant? If this was a technically-capable parody. What I mean is, it plays fine, but it's actually a giant middle finger to the fighting game craze of the mid-nineties, with every character and setting being an absolute cliche. Making it digitized would be the icing on the cake.

I can only hope...

So, there's tons of super-talented CG artists out there and these guys decided to get their friends drunk enough to wear whatever they could find in the nearest dollar store in front of a greenscreen?

Don't drink kids. Unless you've starred in Dark Presence, then the only thing you should do is drink.

Can anyone explain why they spent a load of time on the character's animation and then used a crappy background, I would have thought it be easier (and possibly more effective) to just use a video of a stage set up with all the props and shizzle.

please let this game be real.

I actually feel sorry for this company and the criticism it's getting. Mainly because they do make effort to help the arcade industry. For that reason alone, I'd throw a few bones down and give it a try, even if I look at this and think it's over 15 years too late aesthetically.
