Retailer lists Guitar Hero Van Halen for August release photo

With Guitar Hero: Metallica not even on shelves, rumors have already popped up that Activision are prepping another band-specific title, this time featuring hard rock band, Van Halen.

We had heard the info from a source a few months back even before the public rumor info about a Van Halen-specific game came into the spotlight. Now, a third source seems to confirm the title existence -- videogame retailer Game Crazy is now listing a title called Guitar Hero Van Halen with an "8/31/09" release.

The inclusion of Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" on Guitar Hero World Tour had more than a few people excited, many expecting additional songs from the band via downloadable content. Plans of a Guitar Hero Van Halen seems to be a good indicator as to why that hasn't happened. And considering the band has had more top 100 Billboard hits than any other rock band in history (including Aerosmith and Metallica), it also seems like an obvious money-making choice.

Until Activision confirms the title, this info still remains in that gray rumor territory; it's entirely possible the initial rumors spurred someone at Game Crazy to add the title to their system. Still, we were pretty confident in our original source, so it's looking likely. Like they say: where there's smoke there's fire, and where there's money, there's Activision.

Also, no "Running With the Devil," no sale.

[Thanks, vApathyv!]

I call placeholder date. August 31st is a Monday. Now I may be a zany Brit but aren't games released on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the US?

Also Van Halen fans are all too old and frail to play Guitar Hero. Possibly.

My god, they really are planning to crank these out this year. But wouldn't oversaturation end up hurting them in the long run?

I demand "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love".

@lvl54spacemonkey-

Usually that's true, but not all companies strive for that, and if I'm not mistaken the past two Guitar Hero's actually released on a Sunday of all days.

I'm not a fan of GH or Van Halen. So this fails for them as far as I'm concerned. Probably a good business decision though! =)

I'm a much larger fan of Rock Band than Guitar Hero. Although it might not be as hard, the guitar parts feel much more natural. I've always been against the band releases, there really is a limited appeal and once you play all the songs a few times, there isn't much more to do except trade it in or sell it.

Or, they could just release the songs as DLC for GH:WT? No, of course not, this is Activision we're talking about.

Since I don't like GH, I would be all over Rock Band: Air Supply. Since they can in fact "make all the stadiums rock" and "make you every promise that has ever been made and make all your demons be gone"

August seems kind of soon, with Metallica at the end of the month and (presumably) a full GH5 in October/November. I've been fine with one band game and one full game a year (I don't even count the handheld games), but two games that are essentially expansions to the previous year's seems like overkill. I guess I have no right to be surprised, though.

I do love Van Halen, so I'll still buy it. I jut hope all this stuff will be uploadable into Guitar Hero 5/World Tour 2. With no full Rock Band game this year, that's going to be Neversoft's big chance to catch up with all the things RB's done really well. They really need to get it right.

Also, make both David Lee Roth and Sammy Haggar playable. I want my Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love and Panama, but I also want 5150 and Best of Both Worlds. Don't screw this up, guys.

I will reserve my comments towards a third dedicated "band specific" Guitar Hero game until I see one that I like. So far Aerosmith was a joke.

AC/DC was fun, but the fact that it was essentially a live album was a slight letdown.

Metallica has the opportunity to be fun, but since GH's dev team lacked any forsight in copying RB's features, they're continuing to rely solely on catalog availability as their sole positive feature. Lord only knows I don't look to Rock Band for "boss battles" and shitty Dragonforce tracks.

Thank the heavens that Harmonix got The Beatles. I think I'd give up on all music games if it went to Neversoft instead.

I hate the whole concept of band specific guitar heroz but dammit if they don't put all the stuff that's going to be fun to play on them

There's no way that the charts they will make for any of the songs in this game will be accurate by any stretch
