Retailer listing reveals first details on Rock Band 2 cymbal add-ons photo
     wii

Anyone who picked up the new Rock Band 2 drum peripheral may be wondering what they're going to do with those ports on the back of the kit. The answer: you're going to attach cymbals to it. But what do they look like? How do they work? Where do babies come from?

An online GameStop listing has the first (yet small) image of the official cymbal add-ons, produced by Mad Catz, along with the first solid information on the set. For $29.99, you'll be able to pick up two velocity sensitive cymbals that can be used as a crash, a ride, or hi-hat.

The kit comes with "easy-to-install" mounting brackets that should let you position the cymbals as you see fit. Below is a quick run down the features, taken directly from the online listing:

  • Crash, ride and hi-hat cymbals.
  • Velocity-sensitive for precise drumming
  • Adjustable height
  • Easy-to-install clamps for quick setup.
  • 2 x Cymbals
  • 1 x Double Clamp
  • 1 x Single Clamp
  • 2 x Colored Wing Nuts
  • User Guide

So here's my question -- the new drum kit is expandable for up to three cymbals. If I want to actually have three cymbals on my kit, do I need to buy two packages of two cymbals? And then what exactly are we supposed to do with the extra cymbal?

Either way, these add-ons shouldn't be add-ons they should be... include-ons?

It's interesting, but do you really need them if they aren't adding any different notes?

I'd certainly like to pick these up with the new drums once the bundle is out in October, but why are there only two? I have no idea what you'd do with an extra one.

Also, I forgot to ask this in one of the other Rock Band posts you made today, but does the game have any option to recognize that you have cymbals in and give you any notation of when you should use the cymbals instead of drums? I'm really hoping it's an option, and that it's not just left to the user to figure out.

@Necros:

I think the cymbals plug into a designated spot that doubles as an existing color, so like... I guess a cymbal on the right would substitute for blue or whatever.

I actually had the same question

"Either way, these add-ons shouldn't be add-ons they should be... include-ons?"

So you would rather be forced to buy it, then to chose to? Interesting take.

Cant say I agree.

Wow, with the time and money people spend on these games they could learn to play real instruments!! Seems like a bunch of wasted plastic thats just gonna get junked in the near future(read 1-3 years).

Some kids I know started out with Rock Band, and eventually learned how to play the actual instrument. So I wouldn't really call it a waste of time.

I'm no musician, and to lazy to look it up, but isn't all that's missing is another cymbal and the big round drum (whatever it's called). If the right program, happily masquerading as a game, teaching one to play the drums were brought out, the nay-sayers would have to shut up (and play the game?).

@ baeK

Do you consider game like Call of Duty 4 a waste, when you can just as easily enlist?

What about GTA? Why dont we get out there and REALLY steal some cars?

Come on man, smarten up and stop trying to be an elitist. Let me guess, you are a real musician? We are all very impressed. Oooooooooooh.

@ nicojay: You mean the bass drum? That's what the foot petal is used for. And drums sets can vary wide and far depending on the drummer, but the basic set up is usually four elevated drums (floor tom, two rack toms, snare), the larger bass drum, and three cymbals (crash, ride, and hi-hat). Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

@ mxyzptlk

Yep, that's a usual drum set up, or even less. I only use one rack tom. All personal choice.

Thanks Mxyzptlk. Does anyone think a learn to drum program/game would catch on or is rock band enough for most.

Do the right thing!

Wait for next years Rock Band 3 with cymbals included with the kit itself.

Plus they will probably change the gameplay for the next game too.

Will it ever have a pedal for hihat?

These looked better than the GH4 cymbals but then I find out they're not included and made by mad catz. I am weary.

I really would like to hear that these don't suck. Because if they're even half-decent I'm grabbing them and the RB2 kit.

If the eat it, I'll spend the money on blow and keep my RB1 drums.

Mad Catz usually makes pretty decent stuff as long as they're not controllers. Looking forward to hearing some impressions of these when they finally come out. Also, a possible (but still stupid) solution to having three cymbals is to split the cost of a second set with a friend who is also planning on getting the cymbals. That way, you both get three.

Hopefully an update can include cymbal functionality, like a special icon to get points or necessitating a cymbal if detected?

And the third slot I imagine will be a high-hat and will use the extra slot with a pedal. Hopefully.

Is this going to enhance my gaming experience or just be tacked on?
