Nintendo of Japan has confirmed that it will be releasing the Super Mario Collection Special Pack for the Wii in Japan this year on October 21.
The Special Pack is said to be basically be the Super Mario All-Stars collection released on the Super Nintendo back in the early-90s. The collection contained visually updated versions of classic Super Mario Bros. titles, including Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.
Sweetening the deal, this package is said to come with a special booklet and a soundtrack CD. The booklet, "Super Mario History 1985-2010," will reportedly feature never-before-seen development images and information. The soundtrack is a similar deal, and will contain select music from the Super Mario Bros. series of games, all the way up through Super Mario Galaxy 2.
No word on a North American release, but let me make my feelings on this clear, Nintendo: I WANT THIS NOW.

In short, I'd totally buy this but I'm not getting my hopes up of it releasing here.
@Rogue
Shut up.
I imagine it could include Super Mario 64, Sunshine ,and... something else I dunno.
Bring this baby to NA, Nintendo!!!!!!
If they throw in both the cardinal SNES outings (as I said), you could have a good retail collection that would be worth the $40-$50.
Also, I think would be cool (a la R-Type Dimensions, Monkey Island Special Edition, etc.) if you can switch between Classic (8-bit) and updated (16-bit) style. Little touches like NES flicker as a menu option (like in Mega Man 9 & 10) also give it some charm.
I personally have SMB1-3 for the NES (and play them regularly) and I did get SMB3 for virtual console (prior to me dusting off my wife's old NES and getting SMB3 [and other games] from a dude on Craiglist), but I would put down $50 for a good, robust collection.
If a collection is done right (good bonus features, good recreations/emulation of old ones), having a nice retail disc is worth my time. I have the Sonic Mega Collection for the Gamecube, which (albeit with some long-winded unlocks) includes the cardinal Sonic games + additional game unlockables [Knuckles lock-ons + Flicky & Ristar]. On an SD screen, it looks as good, or slightly better than my Genesis [looks basically the same on HD... e.g. Virtual Console probably looks a little sharper at 480p]. The experience of using the GC controller is perfectly appropriate (especially since most of the games only use one button with the d-pad) and the bonus images and stuff are pretty decently done for late 2002.
I got this back around 2005 as one of my first purchases for the Gamecube. I kind of got out of console gaming for a while, but my best friends [a married couple we went to college with] got my wife into the Gamecube, so she bought one for "herself". Mind you, at the time (and still), I already had an old Genesis model 2 (with Sega CD and 32x) with 6-in-1 (with Sonic 1), Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, and Sonic 3D Blast (plus Sonic CD... which so needs to be released elsewhere, btw). In a sense, the only things I got out of the package (which sure, by 2005 was $20 new) was Ristar and Flicky, but it is really nice to have well-made collection.
So in the end, Nintendo will have my $40-$50 if they give me more than the original SNES "Lost Levels" with additional music and images... what would be a dream version would be as follows:
Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.: Lost Levels
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario 64 [super bonus]
Super Mario Sunshine [super-duper bonus, but the original does play on the Wii]
+ Bonus material
In that way, they can charge a new retail premium (and you know Nintendo first-party products don't drop price new for quite some time), you can play every cardinal game on the Wii. A Mario fan would be compelled to get this Super Mario Collection + Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 and get a complete Mario fix.
Well, that was a rant.
@Rogue257
This isn't your kids gaming site, real men don't post first.
Are you aware that they also released the Sonic Gems Collection on the Gamecube which has SonicCD on it?
2. Calling something a collection usually implies it is complete.
It is 2010. Put in Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2, both graphical versions of the games already in it, and the unique 2D Game Boy/ Game Boy Advance titles. That would be worth $50.
3. If you're going to sell these on a physical medium again, they should at least be use the physical medium enough to require it. Seriously Nintendo, reup the graphics again to the point in which WiiWare or Virtual Console couldn't handle it or stop being so environmentally evil.
Are the people getting excited over this the same people who never played these Mario games (if they exist)? I don't get it.
If it's the former, then I have no clue why so many of you want this collection in the U.S.. We're talking about something that should be a Virtual Console release. If it's the latter, then I'm somewhat interested, but only if it includes World and World 2.
Why would Nintendo wait this long to release this???
Ahhhrgh!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooOOOooooOOOOOOooOOOOOOoOoOoOoOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I have all the games anyway, but that's not the point. Plus bonus stuff?
YES PLZ.
