Resonance of Fate also standard definition TV friendly photo

After playing Resonance of Fate, I have no idea why you'd play such a beautiful game on a standard definition television. People did it with Dead Rising, and they all had beef with the text size. For most, it was unreadable in SD.

If you saw my TGS preview of this lovely gun-heavy, acrobatic RPG, you'll know that it has plenty of selling points. But there are actually a few that the marketing guys missed, and the game's chief programmer made it a point to list them out in a recent blog post at the game's official site.

The standard def guys will be glad to hear that the font has been adjusted to be readable on your television. That was nice of them. In the demo, it was quite small, so that could have definitely been an issue.

Here's some of the other bulletpoints:

  • Both PS3 and Xbox 360 versions support (but not require) HD installs
  • All music in 5.1 surround, recorded in concert hall
  • no disc swapping
  • save anywhere, even in battle
  • battles have a retry feature

I love that Sega and tri-Ace are cleaning up an already awesome game to make it even better.

Saving in battle? That could potentially be a way to massively screw over your file, but the ability to retry the battle negates that to some degree. Every game should be standard definition friendly, that's what made me completely give up on Sacred 2, before I got my HDTV.

No disc swapping on the 360, I wonder how that fares for the games length considering its an RPG.

How about a release date? Ballpark? Close to FFXIII or far?

How many games that came out in the last few years shipped on two discs?

I meant to add this to my "list of games to look out for" a while back when someone linked me a video. JRPGs aren't usually my thing, but I'll be damned if this doesn't look awesome.

Well I can imagine the reason people play it on a standard definition TV is because that's all they have. I'll never understand why more developers don't add a standard definition option. All they have to do is lower the resolution. But I guess that's harder to do than it sounds...or they are just lazy.

I don't care what you say, you are an idiot if you buy a 360 or PS3 before an HDTV. It's like buying an expensive computer and using a TV set as a monitor. It's just plain stupid. Sure you might be able to play a few games decently, but most games you wont be able to read the text and you will get your ass kicked in multiplayer because your view is distorted due to lack of pixel depth. I bought a nice HDTV then picked up my PS3 later that year.

@ninjikiran
Tales of Vesperia was pretty long, and it's only on a single disc.

Yeah what happened there? Im still playing Vesparia and reaching the 40 hour mark yet in previous RPGs I have had to change disk after about 15. The only thing that comes to mind is the lack of actual cut scenes and even the ones included are only about 30 seconds long but I can't imagine they would take that much space up.. would they?

You are confusing intelligence with disposable income.
Straight up ignoring the fact that not everyone can afford an HDTV that can buy the console is ridiculous.

Quite frankly that screen-shot makes me want burn whatever that thing is...

@Mrsatan: Theres one huge flaw in your analogy. You can buy a crappy but functional monitor for peanuts. You cant do that with an HD setup and surround sound.

Battles with retry sounds like taking the J out of JRPG. I like.

I think this will be a first day buy for me, and luckily I will be playing this beautiful game in HD. But it was great of them to consider people without HDTVs. After all Standard definition, is still the standard.

If I had this game, or any real interest therein, I would be grateful for its legibility on our crappy old SDTV. Commentors: gaming on SDTVs works perfectly well, thanks very much. So stop asking the "how can you?" question, it's totally irrelevant, not to mention warped in favour of your own assumptions about how current-gen consoles "should" be played. Hint: if there's a lead for it, it should work with it. There is no right or wrong.
