Resistance 2 will have split-screen competitive and cooperative play photo

Aside from wicked huge monsters and a kicking pace, Resistance 2 will feature split-screen play of both varieties – cooperative and competitive. In the latest post on PlayStation Blog, Insomniac community relations manager James Stevenson revealed that the game’s 8-player co-op mode will support split-screen players, as well as its massive competitive multiplayer component.

In addition to the above reveal, Stevenson noted that the bonus DVD included with the collector’s edition of the game has been switched to a Blu-Ray disc. That means high-definition video for the silly “making-of” documentaries.

It’s been a long time since I’ve considered playing online with a friend next to me on the couch. Part of it has to deal with the friend always being useless, but the other part is that not too many games offer this anymore. What do you guys think? Will you be sinking your teeth into split-screen?

[Thanks Mr. Pibb!]

Sweet, split screen action. Delicious.

Split Screen action is, I feel, VITAL to a good multiplayer console game. A game played with a friend next to you is always 100x better than a game played with anyone online. Castle Crashers is a fantastic example. Halo 3 is another, as my flatmate and I proved tonight, with some alcohol sweetening the deal.

Split Screen co-op is the main reason I played Resistance 1, and the only reason I continued playing for more than 2 minutes.

I completely agree with ajaxender. I'm to the point now where if a multiplayer game doesn't have split screen I probably won't buy it, unless its single player is the main reason I'm buying the game. I've passed up quite a few games because of the lack of split screen support because about 80% of the time I'm playing video games I've got a friend over to play with me. There's no excuse for not having a split screen component in a multiplayer game other than the developers just being too lazy to add one.

I loved the co-op in FoM and yet was disappointed at the lack of competitive split-screen, so just by this announcement along I'm sold on the game.

This game is going to be so epic. 60 players at once is going to be pure mayhem with whip cream on top.

I can not wait for this game to come out and the spli-screen online co-op action orgy is going to rock.

Most of my favourite video game moments have come from playing with friends in the same room as me. Glad they're keeping this feature but I understand why many developers don't.

I would love if more games did this. My girlfriend (an ex-Halo fiend) and I have been waiting for Left 4 Dead because I read it will offer splitscreen online co-op. Unfortunately, there aren't many FPS games available nowadays that offer the feature, so we haven't had time to get her back in FPS shape.

And honestly, it's saddening. Splitscreen play is one of the hallmarks of my game playing childhood. More games need to bring it back. Good for Insomniac.

It's mildly depressing that a game that allows more than one person to play a multiplayer game on one console is so rare.

A few years back when the console multiplayer trend shifted towards online and not splitscreen, there was always epic disappointment whenever a mate was around and putting a racing or shooter game on only to find there was no 2 player option, only online.

I'm happy to take a hit in the games visuals for the sake of laughing at or swearing revenge against a mate RIGHT NEXT TO YOU than play online and feel almost like its no different than single player AI (OK not everyone would feel that way, but I certainly do).

I was considering passing this game up, however since finding this out through beta. HOW can you pass it up? This much content for 59.99? There's nothing else out there that comes close by trillions of miles.

This rules. Not enough games these days have offline multiplayer of any kind. Now all I need is a PS3...:\

I love how splitscreen is something people celebrate these days. In my opinion, it should be expected, and not just a BONUS feature. I mean, come on. Splitscreen is the basis of all console fps multiplayer.

As someone who has ZERO nearby video game playing friends, I'm surprised that splitscreen gets so much love.

Hopefully games like Halo, Resistance 2 and Left 4 Dead will usher in a trend of splitscreen gaming. I like online, but a lot of it seems dodgy as late. Looking at you castle crashers and socom.
