Capcom has today revealed that two PlayStation 2 titles are kissing their online services goodbye. Both Monster Hunter and Resident Evil: Outbreak will no longer have any supporting servers as the external company providing them is pulling out of PS2 online service.
Resident Evil: Outbreak was an online co-op game in which teams of players pooled their resources to escape the zombie threat in Raccoon City, while Monster Hunter gave you the task of, well, hunting monsters. You won't be able to enjoy the multiplayer features of either game from December 31st onwards.
Capcom itself stated that it wanted to be able to continue supporting these two games, despite how old they were. "We’ve tried to extend the contract, move it someplace else, etc. It’s not happening," admitted Capcom in its blog. "The hosting partner (who I guess remains nameless here) is just quitting the business entirely and doesn’t want to mess around with the time/money involved in porting anything. Thanks to everyone who has kept these games fun online for so many years."
Who here is affected by this, if anyone? While hard to imagine people still enjoying online games on the PS2 (which never had that big an online following anyway), you can bet that there are people out there, somewhere, due to be bitterly disappointed by this. It's a shame, but what can you do? Business is business, and as per usual, it's the Monster Hunter players who get crapped on.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
It's hard to imagine people enjoying Resident Evil: Outbreak.
This, right here, is why I'll pay for Xbox Live.
It may be a pain in the ass to part with $50 a year, but my obscure game from whenever
socom and timesplitters future perfect were spectacular!!!1!!
Resident Evil: Outbreak, still have both versions, but haven't loaded them in years, and never mastered either of them, just way too confusing. Someone should of hacked that game to add voice chat, then it would of been a lot more fun. Can't wait for that new Valve zombie co-op game. (Left 4 Dead? I think? ____ 4 ____ something)
Sadly, we will probably never see another thanks to the fun, but oh so gunpornish RE4.

At least I could respawn as a zombie, track that idiot kid down, and take revenge for the irritation he caused.
