Resident Evil is Capcom's biggest selling series photo

Here’s a shocker: people like Resident Evil. According to Capcom global sales data -- recently compiled beautifully by Kotaku -- the Resident Evil series has outsold the Mega Man series by around 12 million units. While RE has reached a certain pop culture status, it’s important to remember that Mega Man has had (roughly) a staggering 124 individual releases on numerous platforms over the years. RE has had 56. (Whoa.)

Below is a snippet of Kotaku’s table with all Capcom series sales data through the 2009 fiscal year. The first number is the amount of games sold. The numbers in parentheses are the total amounts of individual releases according to Capcom (which counts ports to other platforms as well):

  • Resident Evil - 40 million (56)
  • Mega Man - 28 million (124)
  • Street Fighter - 27 million (62)
  • Devil May Cry - 10 million (11)
  • Monster Hunter - 8.5 million (11)
  • Onimusha - 7.8 million (12)
  • Dino Crisis - 4.4 million (13)

Just so you know, Dino Crisis beat out Final Fight, Ace Attorney and Breath of Fire. Discuss this travesty.

I'm kind of surprised to see Onimusha on there as well.

Final Fight! Ace Attorney! Breath of Fire!

How could you lose out to Devil May Cry?!

Resident Evil 5 would have been even better if you would play as Brad Nicholson. Would add some realism to the instant-kill punches. Oh, and the now famous boulder punching scene.

Because DMC 3 is highly regarded as the greatest action game of all time, and two different versions of the game were developed just to meet consumer demand. Without it, DMC wouldn't be as high on the list.

I love Dino Crisis so you can just shut your mouth, I mean come on it's Resident Evil with dinosaurs instead of zombies, who wouldn't love that?

Resident Evil is the best selling franchise because people LOVE killing white, hispanic, and blacks zombies.

It's more like sarcasm than a rhetorical question, right?

Regardless, shoot me in the face. Now.

@Naim
My only guess is Genma Onimusha sold very well for the Xbox, and tons of American fans were like "OMG SAMURAI THIS IS THE SHIT".

@Magnalon: GO is the only Xbox title I own. ._.; Of course, this was in the bargain bin at Target so...

What does it mean about individual releases? Like, US, EUR, and JPN releases of RE5 counts as three?

DMC3 one of the greatest action games of all-time? Seriously?

DMC was great, 2 was atrocious. 3 was just in between.

Having never played Dino Crisis, I can only assume that involves dinosaurs and some kind of crisis.

Oh you've played it, it just had zombies in it instead of dinosaurs. It was RE with Claire Redfield knockoff main character and replace zombies with velocaraptors and Nemesis with T-Rex.

Dino Crisis was fucking awesome, man, and it deserves it's place in that list, just below the -really- great games.

There is no way I would get the amount of re-playability I got from DC in Final Fight, Ace Attorney or Breathe of Fire; ok well maybe Breathe of Fire, but BoF doesn't have dinosaurs!

Probably because they're pretty old franchises from the SNES era, if you'll notice the oldest game there is Dino Crisis from the PS1 era.

And Phoenix Wright is pretty niche.

I want a new Dino Crisis, the in-space one could have worked but the horrendous camera really killed it, GIVE US ANOTHER DINO CRISIS CAPCOM, hell make it like RE5, that would FUCKING KICK ASS.

@Skribble: It's got DRAGONS! Dragons are way cooler than dinosaurs! But props for mentioning BoF. Fuck the rest of you.

Considering how many of those games have had sequels of late and popularity it makes a lot of sense.

RE is on its fifth game, without couting Outbreak series (2 games) or the Gun Survivor series (4 games).

Street Fighter is the only other game series Capcom create, that's had a good constant couple of different versions over the years.

I think Megaman is really up their because of the Zero GBA/DS games.

I'd like to see another Onimusha game, but perhaps 3 and 4 didn't sell as well, since it was PS2 only.

Dino Crisis can burn. Fighting dumb dinosaurs does not make a good game. We know this because this is exactly why the Turok series is crap. It would be interesting to see a new Dino Crisis game in MT Framework 2, but dinosaurs a predictable enemies. First game was okay and it went downhill from there.

Megaman is on there because there are at least 760 megaman games.

Dino Crisis is a shocker since there are only 3 games in the entire series and 3 was a flop, so 1 and 2 must have been gangbusters.

"Megaman is on there because there are at least 760 megaman games. "

I call bs. Why do you think they've made so many games? The series was really popular for a long time. Some of the GBA versions still sell like hotcakes.

I argue that, if Mega Man was given the same attention as the RE series by Capcom, it could still be a blockbuster series. The last normal Mega Man game was 8. For the PSX and Saturn. And it was rushed and low budget. The last normal X game was X8. For the PS2. And it was rushed and low budget. Then of course there's MM9... which was made with NES graphics. Still cool, but you see where I'm going with this....

Good lord, I can guarantee that half those Megaman sales were because of those shit-tastastic Battle Network games.

Right on. The original NES games sold millions. It's not "just" because of the GBA/DS titles.

Dino Crisis was in the right place at the right time. I'm not going to say it didn't deserve to sell well, but it does seem tragic that the series has more sales than Phoenix Wright, which has had four games (or more, since this is global) so far.

@ Cowboy TTop

You are forgetting Resident Evil 0 & Resident Evil Code Veronica.

Also, there should be distinction between the original RE and the REmake & include it as well.
