A new batch of Resident Evil 6 screens have stomped their squelchy way onto the Internet, accompanied by a bunch of hot game details. From revamped controls to horror elements, there's plenty for the Resi-obsessed to be digesting.
- Game is 50% complete.
- RE6 doesn't aim to return the series to its roots, despite the added horror atmosphere.
- Capcom aims for this to be the "greatest" game in the series. Duh.
- The third main character is being designed to relate to "young people." I am going to guess it's iCarly.
- The president from the trailer is not Ashley's father, BUT HE IS STILL WHITE SO THAT'S RACIST!
- Set in the fictional Chinese coastal town of Lanshiang.
- The zombies of RE6 are not spawned by the T-virus, but by something else. Despite being zombies, they can use weapons and will run or leap at players.
- A new B.O.W is the J'avo. These monsters can understand speech, work in groups, and will regenerate lost limbs. If damaged significantly, they can mutate their bodies like the Nemesis or Birkin.
- You can move and shoot in the game ... to a degree. A revamped control scheme allows you to slowly strafe from left to right while aiming. You'll also be able to evade, take cover and perform the all-important 180 degree turn.
Seems to me that Resident Evil 6 will be a game of compromises, with Capcom attempting to appeal to everybody at once. Sometimes, that can be a good thing, and other times it doesn't end well, becoming a mass of half-measures. I'm certainly excited to see how it goes, and naturally hope for the best.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Words fail me.
Hopefully the game will find a good way to balance action and horror.
...huh.
Honestly, I'm so cold on the series at this point that I could probably forgive any kind of gameplay issues if they nailed the tension of the earlier games. I remember, in RE3, running from Nemesis but not seeing him. The only way I even knew he was there was the constant "STARRRRRS", and the rockets zipping across the screen. Give me that.
50% complete and a November release is very very unsettling. we also have Raccoon City coming out in March.
Keep your thumb from using the movement stick while aiming.
There you go, command disabled!
Two different developers - Raccoon City is basically outsourced to Slant Six. RE6 is in-house.
But that takes effort.
This just invites the "watchdog" assholes to claim that videogames are evil and that they target children...
what's with the growing CoD-ization of this series and the focus on "young people"? ah, i know: a whole lotta sales
Well it's been 16 years since RE1, the 18 year olds of 1996 does not have the same taste as the 18 year olds of 2012.
@Jim Sterling
One difference though, if the game is designed to be played with move and shoot in mind, then just not using the thumb will most likely not work, you can't design a game around two different control concepts like that, Revelations tried and, at least to me, it got waaaaay to easy if you did the aim and shoot thing and the opposite reaction would be that the game got way to hard.
I can't wait for this game and I know it's going to be awesome.
I suppose you're right about what they truly mean with "young people" and I also reckon the watchdog groups will still say that videogames are evil.
But a press release like this is just perfect for them; they have nothing but time on their hands and will be happy to jump on this one. The same way Joe Camel was supposed to relate to "young people".
On topic: I hoped that they were returning to the genius Scenario system they created in RE2, but it looks like they'll be completely different stories, totally unaffected and inconsequential to one another. Which is a damn shame. But honestly, I only buy numbered RE games anyway(1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Spin offs can do one), and they've always been solid, so I'm excited for this. Also, actual zombies. A return of a true, gnarly as fuck, near indestructable B.O.W. Win.
And the part where "take cover" is something I'm a little iffy on. I don't mind cover-shooter games, but only if they do well on those mechanics like Gears did. Can only assume and hope that this cover mechanic is something that can be punished if used too much like with the screen of the tentacle grabbing Chris. I truly don't want to find myself behind cover throughout the entire game. That would probably kill the RE mood for myself.
I am really interested in Leon's campaign, though. If we are required to conserve ammo, having 28 Days Later styled zombies can definitely be a great zombie experience. I just really hope it doesn't degrade into another ridiculous third person shooter (with non-zombies that shoot back) with more ammo than anyone can carry.
Guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering all the 12 year olds playing Halo and Call of Duty....
A company featuring the word "Slant" is working on a Japanese-owned IP. DAT'S RACIST. Looking forward to this, though now I'm curious to what the zombies are.
This series ended with Code Veronica, to me.
I'm guessing Pedobear.
Oh well, I don't care about it as long as they don't over do it. I don't want a crazy whiny teenager following me everywhere complaining that s/he can't upload pictures to the internet because of the lame zombies.
Also I want Claire back, I need my fix of redhead with a shotgun and tight jeans.
Also this series becoming more like a third person shooter than a Resident Evil game anymore is a little worrying.
Hopefully this is a lot better than 5. More like 4, but with deeper horror aspects attached to it.
They need to just bring back Billy from RE:Zero.
"Seems to me that Resident Evil 6 will be a game of compromises..."
Except, surely, given the way Capcom does things, it'll actually come out to only really cater to one side, and everyone will complain either way.
I can't believe the series hasn't given us the RE4 camera control with a reasonable premise yet. The closest thing we got was Lost in Nightmares, but even that features entirely too much superman-Wesker (any is too much).
There's no reason Capcom couldn't make another survival horror game. It's as if dude bro shooters have permeated every genre to the point that most anything that isn't a dude bro shooting fest is thought to be unmarketable.
Capcom just wants to appeal to everyone these days I guess. EVEN THE RACISTS
>Chris Redfield shoved an Asian guy in the trailer. RACISM.
That's wrong. You can ONLY be racist against black people. Thanks video games!
What is this I don't even
I personally don't want Capcom to make a character to appeal to younger audiences, and I'm part of that audience. I relate to (to a point) Leon, not some whiny 20 year old.
Anyways, finally some degree of moving and shooting, thank Christ. You know, so we can do what we've been doing in every other game for 10 years.
Agreed, however, maybe that Asian dude had a LITTLE bit of black in his genetics. After-all, Chris wouldn't be there shooting them if they didn't have at least a trace in their blood. As seen here:
