Resident Evil 5: What's the bloody problem? photo

While my colleagues have been jetting around the world, playing preview versions of Resident Evil 5 and generally having a great time, I had to wait until today before getting my first hands-on experience with Capcom's latest not-zombie adventure. Technically, I could have done it sooner but I'm a lazy, lazy man and making a Japanese account is too much like hard work.

Nevertheless, after hearing people complain about the "new controls" and how disappointing the game is, I started to fear that one of this year's most highly regarded upcoming titles was going to suffer the fate of other franchises that have made the console jump recently.

Having spent all morning popping heads and stabbing Ganados in the heart, I find myself asking the question, what's the bloody problem?

First of all, I don't quite understand where the "new controls" part comes into play. The game has no new controls. It has controls that were introduced to the world in 2005. Resident Evil 4 was hailed as one of the greatest action games ever made, and quite rightly so. It's true that we've not had a game that handles quite like RE4 in those three years, but the fact remains that there is no new and terrible control scheme in Resident Evil 5, unless my Xbox downloaded a completely different demo from everyone else's.

I still maintain it's an excellent control scheme as well. The accuracy of the laser sight and the deliberately slow turning movements help to keep up the tension while ensuring that you have a fighting chance. Sure, Chris and Sheva handle "like tanks," but if you know how to run and do 180-degree turns properly, there's no reason why you should struggle getting around the map.

When playing the demo, it felt like playing Resident Evil 4 again, just with better graphics and even creepier enemies. That was definitely a good feeling, since RE4 is one of my favorite games. I don't get how a follow-up to one of the best action games made, that handles the exact same way, can suddenly be deemed "new" and "bad." Am I really missing something crucial here? I don't think I am.

It has been compared unfavorably to Resident Evil 4 Wii, and I can at least partially understand that bit. Yes, RE4 Wii's controls worked incredibly well, perhaps one of the best uses of the Wii remote yet. However, are we seriously marking down videogames because different games on different systems have control schemes we prefer? I happen to think that Resident Evil 4 Wii had a fundamentally better control scheme than a lot of games -- Metal Gear Solid 4, Gears of War 2, Drake's frigging Fortune. That doesn't mean those games are bad or unplayable.

I guarantee you as well that if Resident Evil 5 ever comes to the Wii, it'll be the worse for it as well. Online play would be a joke, and if you want a preview of the graphics, there are plenty of Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop screenshots on the 'net. Gameplay controls are incredibly important, but these ones work very well. Just because they're not motion-spurred doesn't mean they suck. It strikes me as a rather snobbish attitude to take, considering nobody said RE4 sucked when it was still on the GameCube and PS2.

Another point I am seeing is that Resident Evil 5 is not "scary." Now, I grant you that the game is not psychologically scary, like old-school survival horror. This game isn't survival horror; it's pure action all the way. However, again I must ask if we were playing the same game. Being trapped in a house and surrounded by a bunch of crazy villagers with axes and wine bottles and massive axes and chainsaws and bags on their heads ... that's pretty fucking terrifying, if you ask me. Okay, it's not disturbed terror -- it's popcorn terror. It's fun terror. But it's still incredibly tense in a Left 4 Dead "Holy shit they're everywhere" vibe.

As one of the harshest reviewers on Destructoid, I have no problem seeing a game get critically mauled if it deserves it. However, when I can't even begin to understand where the criticism is coming from, I can't help but feel the need to ask what the bloody Hell is up. There's nothing new and terrible in Resident Evil 5, as far as I can see. It's just an improved and upscaled Resident Evil 4. The controls are almost entirely the same, with the only big changes I noticed being D-pad equipment changes which, in my opinion, make the controls even more convenient.

The full game might take a sudden dramatic turn and stink to high Heaven. I don't know for certain if this game will be great or not. The demo's given me a pretty fair idea, however. What it hasn't given me is any sort of clue as to why people have decided to hate it.

So seriously, when does this demo punch me in the balls and steal my wallet?

I enjoyed what I saw of the demo. The graphics are bloody impressive. The controls are excellent, though I did have an issue with a glitch where for some strange reason I couldn't reload O.o but other than that, it's fantastic.

It's been known, pretty much since this game was announced, that it would control exactly the same as RE4. There was no public outcry. There may have been the occasional sigh of disappointment, but really nothing more. So why now, when the game is about to be released, is everyone acting like this is some big fucking surprise? People just have to bitch and moan about something -- I mean, seriously, how else would they be able to keep inflating the old flesh balloon?

the only thing that is disapipinting about re5 to me is that while the textures (like the hud and other things) look better on the ps3 than the 360, but it does look more fluid and has less clipping on the 360 though.

Well the controls do suck. They've sucked since the beginning. It's like a bad nightmare where you can't run fast enough. That doesn't make a good game, that doesn't create tension, it creates frustration.

Why not make a racing game where your turning ability is really disabled...does that make it more challenging? Is that why we call people with disabilities challenged? Should we be hoping we were them so our lives were more entertaining?

I just don't understand the approach to this. It's nice looking...the movement and formula are old news and they were flawed back then, but were outshined by the 'coolness' of the game.

Sorry Jim...this game will be JUST ok. But that's about it. It's a frustrating game that could have been so much more if the controls were a little more fluid and less constricting.

Then don't play the game, its that simple. Also if you downloaded the demo for a game that you don't like the controls in the entire series, then why did you download it in the first place? So you could bitch about it, thats all.
Why the hell can't people understand what they are playing? Its a Resident Evil game and treat it as such and accept how it controls and learn them. Sure there not perfect by any means, but if you know what you're getting into then you can get them to work for you. And if you too damn focused on that aspect of the game that you don't want to learn then thats your problem and just don't play it.

Well after playing through the demo, its what I remember a RE5 game to be. I never played RE4, I know I know I'll get around to it...probably not though, but this was pretty much what I expected. The last RE game I played was Code Veronica and while different, RE5 wasn't far from what I remember, aside from the more action pased feel to it. Yea part of me would like to be able to move and shoot, but that was never Resident Evil's thing, so I didn't expect any different. I don't understand it either Jim. All the hoopla over this, maybe people expected it to be more like L4D, or Dead Space, and its not, and if you expected it to be I don't know what I can say to help you.

I will say this though, the game is beautiful, anyone else chub a little when you first saw Sheva?...no?...just me then?

I'm completely new to Resident Evil, so I was a bit disgusted by the controls, but that's fine. I'm sure I would think nothing of it if I got the full game and spent some time in it. What I can't live with is how the game is fucking boring. I'm not saying this because it's not scary - I absolutely hate scary and only allow FEAR 2 to be - I'm saying this because I felt like taking a nap in the middle of playing.

the controls aren't really bad...they just tried to literally translate the RE4 control mapping to the 360 and it kinda...doesn't work as well. Mainly cause there's no Giante A button to use and a small little B beside it to run.

still will be awesome though.

I prefered the old style, zombies were alot more fun and I just like zombies period. Just talking about setting, the way the game played wasn't bad either since you didn't have to manually aim.

Thougb asing the game on its own merits, I agree it is an action style game all the way. Personally though I dislike it, being stationary while aiming isn't tense, it is just annoying and a bad gameplay decision. The rest of the game seems solid and the co-op gameplay is awesome but that one naggle which happens to rule the way the game plays is what keeps me from wanting it.

Ok, fanboys on the left: There are other games you can play. If you don't like the control scheme, play something else. Not every game will be to your taste. That does not make them bad.

Fanboys on the right: The RE control scheme has always been clunky to me. The RE control scheme does not make the game. RE4 Wii proved this. It proved that you can control in a fast and fluid way and still have the atmosphere.

There is no point of pride in saying: I love this game because the control scheme feels clunky and archaic. I will likely not play this game because the Wii version ruined putting up with these controls for me. I'd rather just play RE4 wii again. (Note: I put down RE4 on gamecube b/c I was never really good at the controls, and therefore, it made for a frustrating experience for me. Note 2: if there are alternate controls, I will try them out before passing judgement.)

The idea that no run and gun is some kind of gold standard is retarded. The protagonists of RE are special ops. If the government did not train special ops forces to run and gun, the government would be retarded.

Saying the control scheme feels good for you is one thing. Pretending the design decision makes sense in context with the story and characters is a pretty bizarre argument to make. It really doesn't.

SH 2 not having run and gun makes sense with the story; the guy is not good at fighting. Government operatives not having it is sloppy design, frankly. There are other ways to constrict and scare the player. It's just a lack of imagination on the designer's part that we end up with a weird relic from the ps1 design days that didn't even make sense then.

Jim, are you that much of an idiot? Even the most basic military training allows people to fire on the move. Police can do it, SWAT can do it, marines can do it, the elites of the RE world should be able to do it.

It's not a lack of imagination; it's the realization that a (large) fanbase of gamers are used to and actually like the tank controls of RE and don't want to play an FPS with zombies—that's L4D. And Dead Space? It looks like the game Doom 3 should have been, nothing more.

Games are not survival horror because they have zombies or mutants in them; the genre was established by three games that all had tank-like movement and a mostly helpless-feeling protagonist. That it continues that tradition is not wrong or lazy. In fact, I have a friend who will not play RE4 because it is too actiony for him.

RE is not now and never will be an FPS or 3PS. That's it.

All right... At the risk of getting eaten alive, here goes:
The controls *bells of DOOM*
I must admit I haven't played the demo yet (still waiting for it to hit PSN), so I'm going to base my opinion on a replay of RE4.
First of all: moving and shooting at the same time (or better yet, the lack of) isn't a problem for me. Since you'll be pretty short on ammo (RE4 on harder difficulties made every shot count on the first playthrough), you don't need the run-and-gun style of gameplay. Yes, in RE4/5 you play with a skilled marksman, but still your accuracy should decline while shooting on the move. If every bullet counts, no one (in his/her right mind) would use the mobile mechanic, should it have been included.
So I agree with the RE5 fans concerning the aiming.
The controls aren't perfect though. Maybe they were when RE4 was released, but times have changed and controls need to evolve with it. I know you can instantly turn 180°, but still: couldn't the turning speed be a bit faster (maybe it is, I don't know yet, so just follow with on this one :p)? If you see someone approach from, say, your left, you have no chance to turn and shoot him if he's already within a 2 meter radius. I could (at least shoot in the general direction), you could, special ops could. Your only method to deal with it in RE4 is retreat.
And thirdly, what's up with melee? If you've already stunned your opponent (pe: shot him in the face), you could roundhouse kick him, which was extremely effective in RE4. I like the mechanic, a lot, but the standard melee attack (horizontal knife slash) isn't of any help, which is a shame. Imho, the designers should encourage you to use melee. It's a way of playing that's risky, but (should be) rewarding. In RE4 on the other hand, it's not. You can't even hold of one villager/zombie/ganados with your trusty knife (even though you had training and your opponent moves rather slow). You slash at them, but they don't react in any way (unless you hit them in the face). A bullet makes them flinch and slows them down, your knife doesn't. I'm not saying yo should be able to melee everything, but couldn't Capcom add some force to the attack? Maybe a counter mechanic (you can see the Ganados' axe swings coming hours in advance...)?

Concerning co-op, I have mixed reactions. 2 player co-op sounds amazing and I can't wait to play it. In single player (with an AI partner), I'm not too excited atm. The best RE4 parts for me, were thos where I had some room to move and pick off bad guys on after another (like the village at the start). The worst parts were those where you had to deal with partners (the useless girl whose name I can't remember, the shootout in the barn, ...).
But I might be wrong, we'll know in a few weeks/months :).

And finally, the whole "OMG it isn't scary"-aspect: I believe Jim pretty much hits it right on this one. There's no (psychological) horror whatsoever, no 'fear of the unknown', which I personally think is a bit of a shame. On the other hand, there's thins huge threat when you see a swarm of enemies closing in, banging on doors, crushing through walls, ... It feels like an unstoppable flow of pain :). A single enemy might not be as terrifying (unlike in the earlier Silent Hills), but a lot of them sure are.

All in all I'm still looking forward to this game, but it won't be a 'certain buy' as some describe it here. In it's defense, I don't consider any game a certainty at the moment (save perhaps Dawn of War II) :). RE5 will be a great game with good production values. We'll find out soon if it'll be 'great', not withstanding slight flaws in its controls.

How is everyone missing the TOTALLY ILLOGICAL argument on which this entire article is based?

Why is it a requisite that anyone must have played the prequel in order to 'understand' this game?

Dozens of people have said above that ythe only people who could diss the demo are those who haven't played 4, but I am of the opinion that a good game stands by its own merits. If a game is great, what difference does it make if you haven't played the prequel? I for one never played FF 1-6, but that didn't stop FF7 from becoming one of my favourite games, and I'm sure you could enjoy SF4 even if you never played 3 or 2. Same goes for almost any great franchise.

So basically a lot of you will excuse the poor controls because you want to like this game a lot, based on the fact that you're nostalgic about the prequel. Which is a stupid reason to like a game. Or put another way, if Resi 4 didn't exist would we all be hailing this demo as fantastic, or would we be wondering why the fuck our main character can't walk and shoot simultaneously? I think the latter.

I'm not saying it's not fun; I've played it and it's alright, basically identical to 4, which was an excellent game for it's time but hasn't aged particularly well. I for one can't willfully ignore all the progress that 3rd person shooters have made between now and Resi 4, and anyone who suggests that this is what you must do in order to 'appreciate' 5 is an idiot, frankly.

Just consider that the reason people don't like the demo is because it just isn't all that great.... no great conspiracy here guys. It's just not as good as people had hoped.

Hmmm... I gotta say, the Resident Evil games have been my bread and butter as far as gaming as long as they've been around. I LOVE RE games. Period. I've bought multiple systems just to play a new RE game.

BUT.

I am not excited for this game though I really want to be. In fact, when I bought my 360, it was with thoughts of RE5 dancing in my head... but after playing this demo, I'm really not excited about it.

First of all, ever since I heard about the focus on co-op play, I've been disappointed. You're right, guys, this is not L4D or Gears of War, or Army of Two... it's Resident Evil, what used to be the best single player survival horror game. Now I've got to find some jackhole to play with online or deal with the so-so computer AI. Goody.

And I have to agree with the people who have said that RE5 isn't really bringing anything new to the table... it really feels like RE4 with a new skin and while I absolutely adored RE4, played it over and over, it's been 4 years. Come on.

I dunno, there's going to have to be some earth shattering reviews about this game for me to even consider picking this up... Boo.
