It's been quite a wait, but the US version of Capcom's Resident Evil 5 is now available on Xbox Live in swanky demo form. While many of you played the game during its stint on Japanese Live accounts, a good number of gamers still haven't had a taste of Chris Redfield's sultry ethnic cleansing adventure. Now's the chance for Americans and Europeans who couldn't be bothered to make a fake JP account to get in on the action.
I am going to stop writing this now so I can go and download it. If you've already played it, feel free to share your views. Opinions were mixed when the Japanese demo hit, mainly thanks to the control scheme. Here's hoping Resident Evil 5 can still meet expectations.
Right, seriously stopping now.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Oh and I thought it was awesome.
but not enough FIREGOD
But it wasn't scary at all. Just an action game, at least from the demo. Hopefully that changes in the actual game. Having played through Resident Evil 2 a couple of weeks ago, that game was still creepy and had a sense of trepidation at every turn (even having played through it twice before, and with infinite ammo this time around). I really hope that survival horror isn't dead and that the main game can provide some scares.
All will be forgiven if Claire Redfield makes an appearance.
No, it's not hard at all to control Chris with the current control scheme. And no, it's not scary. Jim wrote an excellent "death of survival horror" article you should read sometime.
*In before all the haters of RE controls are*
I'll probably still end up buying it though, even though I mightn't enjoy it.
I know the Fear 2 demo was pretty good and if you are looking for a creepy game to play that would be the one you want.
Totally agreed, my friends and I were freaking out when we watched him play the F.E.A.R. 2 demo, haha. Real good stuff.
Anyway, I still love RE. SO EAT IT.
Up until i found out that it wasn't, up until i found out that major nelson's webpage had a link to the demo on Xbox.com and from there you would log in - select it and que it up.THEN, switch you xbox360 and login and then the download would start.

but i guess now it's on the marketplace.i'm getting the game regardless of the demo.
Good god, if you can't enjoy this game I feel sorry for you. That being said I'm at work and haven't played it yet, but I find it very hard to believe this game is anything other than amazing.
I admire your blind optimism on this matter.
@everyone
Wait, so its really tank controls all over again? I thought they were inspired by Gears of War or whatever. I'll definitely try it out for myself this week.
As for the RE5 demo, am I the only one finding it insanely hard? Maybe I've just been getting unlucky with who im paired up with, but I'm yet to get past the guy witht he axe..
*sigh*
Dead Space controls > RE5 copypasta controls
coffeesash: Yes it does
RE4 Wii ruined this game for me. lol
/obligatory rant
You can map items/weapons to the Dpad, you don't really need to open the menu.
The demo is awesome.
Thanks will that try that the next time I play.
I just posted a comment on the article about the death of survival horror that you referred to. I'll repost the comment here:
\"Who knows? Perhaps one day a new style of play will emerge that can bring back the truly deep horror that more action-oriented experiences seem unable to capture. Maybe a game where combat is removed completely and you have no option but to hide and run from whatever monsters lurk in the dark. Maybe someone will design a protagonist who displays a lack of fighting skill while still making the combat look well designed. Or perhaps that\'s something completely out of the box that we can\'t imagine yet, and is just waiting to scare the pants off us. \"
Jim:
>"It's funny that you describe an experience like that, because Penumbra: Black Plague on the PC is exactly that. And it's probably the most recent *true* survival horror game of this generation. It's a shame that its indie status alone sent it to the back of the line."<
Anyone looking for an up to date creepy ass survival horror experience owes it to themselves to play Penumbra: Black Plague.
Nooooooo! While I will defend the RE controls to the death, I do agree with you that Dead Space controls are better. It was the same with the crappy Onimusha versus the amazing Devil May Cry controls.
I just don't think they're that bad! :D
When the person making the match is getting it set up, there's a section at the top that lets you change the option to allow anyone to join or just friends.
It's been that way for a long time now. I didn't feel I had to explicitly mention it. Everyone should know already.
Go play something else, son.
Damn, man - Can't wait for next weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!
PS3 gets the demo!
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeea!
