Resident Evil 5 US demo is now on Xbox Live photo

It's been quite a wait, but the US version of Capcom's Resident Evil 5 is now available on Xbox Live in swanky demo form. While many of you played the game during its stint on Japanese Live accounts, a good number of gamers still haven't had a taste of Chris Redfield's sultry ethnic cleansing adventure. Now's the chance for Americans and Europeans who couldn't be bothered to make a fake JP account to get in on the action.

I am going to stop writing this now so I can go and download it. If you've already played it, feel free to share your views. Opinions were mixed when the Japanese demo hit, mainly thanks to the control scheme. Here's hoping Resident Evil 5 can still meet expectations.

Right, seriously stopping now.

It's a good thing that they are allowing us to change the control scheme back, because I think the new "Action/Gears" controls are awful for this game. Those sort of controls only work in games where you can move around while firing your weapon, and since RE isn't about that these new controls just feel like crap.

The first person who comes in here and complains about not being able to fire and move needs to get kicked in the teeth, you knew what was coming.

Oh and I thought it was awesome.

I really enjoyed the demo. It looks gorgeous and it was a lot of fun. All it was was running and gunning, though. And it wasn't as hard as I was led to believe.

But it wasn't scary at all. Just an action game, at least from the demo. Hopefully that changes in the actual game. Having played through Resident Evil 2 a couple of weeks ago, that game was still creepy and had a sense of trepidation at every turn (even having played through it twice before, and with infinite ammo this time around). I really hope that survival horror isn't dead and that the main game can provide some scares.

All will be forgiven if Claire Redfield makes an appearance.

No, it's not hard at all to control Chris with the current control scheme. And no, it's not scary. Jim wrote an excellent "death of survival horror" article you should read sometime.

yay now everyone else can jump on the hate wagon like you know they are going to. -_- for some reason no matter how many times they are told they are exspecting something thats twice as good as resident evil 4. Ah well least i can finally play co-op online again.

They should rename it "[i]Resident Gunslinger 5: The Gunnering[/i}" as the focus has shifted entirely to action now (based on the demo, at least). It's really not that great. We've seen it all before with 4, anyway. I doubt 5 can provide anything genuinely new.

I'll probably still end up buying it though, even though I mightn't enjoy it.

hmm its a 400 mb demo. Downloading it now so we will see.

I know the Fear 2 demo was pretty good and if you are looking for a creepy game to play that would be the one you want.

I liked it, but the new menu in real time was akward. And while playing sinle player the girl when not kicking ass was pretty annoying. Overall its everything I thought it would be which is good.

Totally agreed, my friends and I were freaking out when we watched him play the F.E.A.R. 2 demo, haha. Real good stuff.

Anyway, I still love RE. SO EAT IT.

i was one of the many who stayed up til' the demo appeared, at first i was hearing that the demo was up on the XBLM(4/5am EST).

Up until i found out that it wasn't, up until i found out that major nelson's webpage had a link to the demo on Xbox.com and from there you would log in - select it and que it up.THEN, switch you xbox360 and login and then the download would start.

but i guess now it's on the marketplace.i'm getting the game regardless of the demo.

Considering I hate the old REs and LOOOOOOOOOOVE RE4 in a pretty sexual matter to be honest, this is exactly what I'm looking for. "Oh noes, no more pop-up scary enemies or forced puzzles blargh!" Big fucking deal.

Good god, if you can't enjoy this game I feel sorry for you. That being said I'm at work and haven't played it yet, but I find it very hard to believe this game is anything other than amazing.

Wait, so its really tank controls all over again? I thought they were inspired by Gears of War or whatever. I'll definitely try it out for myself this week.

FEAR 2 was amazing. I convinced one of my friends to play it in pitch black while stoned. Probably something I should have filmed and blogged. it was hillarious.

As for the RE5 demo, am I the only one finding it insanely hard? Maybe I've just been getting unlucky with who im paired up with, but I'm yet to get past the guy witht he axe..

Yes the controls are like a tank. It is pretty sad, they want to change the direction of a game entirely but not the control set up. If you can enjoy the controls of this game i say more power to ya.

You can map items/weapons to the Dpad, you don't really need to open the menu.

The demo is awesome.

Am I the only one who likes the new controls? And also, we've only seen some parts of the beginning of the game, so there might be more "horror" later on. After all, RE4 didnt really get scary until you entered the castle.

@Magnalon

I just posted a comment on the article about the death of survival horror that you referred to. I'll repost the comment here:

\"Who knows? Perhaps one day a new style of play will emerge that can bring back the truly deep horror that more action-oriented experiences seem unable to capture. Maybe a game where combat is removed completely and you have no option but to hide and run from whatever monsters lurk in the dark. Maybe someone will design a protagonist who displays a lack of fighting skill while still making the combat look well designed. Or perhaps that\'s something completely out of the box that we can\'t imagine yet, and is just waiting to scare the pants off us. \"

Jim:
>"It's funny that you describe an experience like that, because Penumbra: Black Plague on the PC is exactly that. And it's probably the most recent *true* survival horror game of this generation. It's a shame that its indie status alone sent it to the back of the line."<

Anyone looking for an up to date creepy ass survival horror experience owes it to themselves to play Penumbra: Black Plague.

I loved RE4. I'm not sure, though, how I feel about the original controls after playing the superior and amazing Wii version. The demo was fun, but it didn't impress me as much as I was hoping. RE5 may not be an instant buy for me anymore.

Nooooooo! While I will defend the RE controls to the death, I do agree with you that Dead Space controls are better. It was the same with the crappy Onimusha versus the amazing Devil May Cry controls.

I just don't think they're that bad! :D

When the person making the match is getting it set up, there's a section at the top that lets you change the option to allow anyone to join or just friends.

Uh, yeah dude, you forgot to mention that this demo is only available to GOLD members. Which in my opinion speaks volumes about The Software Devil's loyalty. Only to the paying customer. Aren't the people who bought an xbox 360 customers? or even worthy of playing a free demo? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! WHAT THE FUCK! This is why I still refuse to subscribe to this crap service. They make you pay for shit that should be free.
