Resident Evil 5 to contain online co-op? Yes, please! photo

Sometime next week, I'll be headed out to Las Vegas for Capcom's CAPTIVATE event, where I'll have a chance to see their forthcoming 2008-2009 line-up. Among those games will be Resident Evil 5, I'm sure — but until then, I'm scraping for all of the info I can get. And this is some good info, damn it.

GamesRadar has one of the first (as far as I know) English previews of the title, and even if it's confusing as hell to read, it does contain a fair amount of new information. I say it's confusing because the preview is all over the place. For example, in the fourth paragraph they use the words "In the areas where you’re separated from your partner," but prior to that there's no mention of a partner at all.

Later, they write "It all depends on whether you’re Player Two or not," which is the first indication that Resident Evil 5 may actually contain multiplayer elements. Then the straightforward bomb is dropped -- "Currently nameless, the mercenary’s inclusion means that, for the first time, you’ll be able to tackle a true Resident Evil game cooperatively online."

I'm really not here to critique the preview (mine will be written with a nasty hangover, to be sure), but yeah ... Resident Evil 5. Cooperative online. Discuss.

How about RE5 to contain survival horror? Because RE4 contained neither.

I never liked RE games due to the camera, but if it had an option to play with someone else...I might look into it.

It's a rather exciting time in gaming...A lot of games these days have some sort of multiplayer, so you no longer have to play alone, or find a RL friend who likes games and likes that particular game...thus, you then have to split the screen so you can't see crap! Boo! Online ftw!

Resident Evil 5: Because ethnically cleansing a village is more fun with a friend.

I want RE5 to be 3000 times scarier than RE4. There was an article on Dtoid a while back showing the early gameplay of RE4 where there was like...zombie babies and some teleporting dude...or something like that. That shit was scary. While RE4 was an unbelieveable game, the new one needs more scary.

this would be a truly amazing thing! I'm interested to see what Capcom does with co-op puzzles in a RE game. And shooting zombies with a friend is always better.

All I can say is:

I'm with Clockwork on this one as I jumped more in RE2 and felt that it was much scarier than RE4. Re4 was amazing but I felt that the eerie ambiance was lost.

Zombie killing co-op should be cool but I hope that it doesn't, in any way, ruin the single player experience as not every game is meant to be two player. Online Co-op solitaire, Co-op Pacman, split screen masturbation....wait, what?

Completely agree with Mozgus, Fuck Westernizing these games, they were good when they were single player, and when they were actually SCARY, not oh, wow, 50 zombies that you have a sackful of grenades and shotgun ammo. Oh no, I have to reload, that's so scary.

I hope there is offline co-op too. I'd love to play through this with my girl and I don't want to be stuck in the bedroom on my 360 while she is in the living room on hers.

@clockwork

Yes, it was scary but it wasn't Resident Evil. It was too Supernaturaly.

And anybody who claims Resident Evil is supernatural is a moron. Supernatural implies ghosts, demons, magic etc. Sure it has zombies but they are created by a virus which isn't supernatural.

Also when I saw this I thought it was awesome, but now that I think about it I'm kind of worried. A game isn't as scary if you are playing with a friend.

That and it's possible it will be Resi Outbreak all over again.

Hell yes, now I can play with a buddy and be incredibly racist at the same time!

But seriously, if this game has co-op, we'll probably laugh at all of the scary parts because we're just that sideways.

well it could be pretty cool but talking to someone through a headset whilst your playing would have to lessen the tension a bit.

Still as long as the single player has me buying more underwear I'll be happy.

hope it doesn't ruin anything, but did you see the mobs in the early vids? Having a buddy sure wouldn't hurt, unless he's a yellow-belly wuss and runs right for the green herb when things get heavy.

No thank you. the whole point to a resident evil game is to create an atmosphere of isolation and dread for things around the corner. It wont be so much like that with your partner blasting pantera music in the background while you both discuss why your phys ed teacher smells of onions.

stupid idea.dont jump on the bandwagon capcom.

How ironic! I did a If you Love it change about Resident Evil. Good to see them having another try at online play, because while outbreak tanked, Lost Planet obviously gave them new tricks.

Mix, RE2 was a great peak for the series, with RE3 being its worst. We were very lucky to see RE4 at all, because fans were losing interest. The old fear of RE was of bad camera viewpoints and claustraphobic fighting in tight spaces with weird controls. RE4 gave a good reboot to the series, but since the game was more open, Capcom provided the claustraphobia of being surrounded by attacking zombie people, than dank corridors with awful wallpaper.

Being creeped upon and attacked by someone is a different type of fear, that didn't really exist in RE1 and 2. Think of it as building on the whole Nemesis thing in RE3, but just because the RE4 villagers move slowly doesn't mean they are any less dangerous.

RE co-op? Ah, Capcom, you save the day again, like a some kind of angel of games.

i honestly don't think that the inclusion of co-op would ruin the single player experience. instead of looking at it as a "co-op game", consider it still a single player experience, with the option of co-operative play. both parties happy.

What the hell are you talking about? RE stopped being RE? IN what way, exactly? No zombies? Wait, no. Got zombies.
Crazy mutant freaks? Hrm... pretty sure they've been in every one since. Tense solitary atmosphere? Check.

I think your just disappointed they added co-op. It's an evolution of a franchise, man! I love RE2 almost as much as 4 and Veronica, but c'mon. You're just not being fair, man. Hadn't that ever occurred to you, man?

Co-op will be mighty helpful for me, seeing as I couldn't beat the first level in Outbreak. I place the blame squarely on my computer AI. And my unusual love of the injured animations of my character, so that I intentionally got hurt every so often, so that I could see myself limping around in a room full of zombies.

However, Resident Evil with a competent second player might kill the tension of having to babysit a retard like Ashley from the clutches of evil.

Color me unconvinced till proven otherwise.

Capcom hinted at online co-op for this game pretty much since it was originally announced. It's nice to see it confirmed.

I'm not gonna get my hopes up though as co-op is the one feature that never quite turns out like you'd hope. Look at Too Human.

I'll be mighty impressed if the game is actually playable in its entirety in co-op.
