Resident Evil 5: Still scary for a nine-year-old photo

When I was nine-years-old, I went over to a friend’s house for his birthday. His older sister had Resident Evil: Director's Cut, and all the pre-teens in the house went upstairs to see it. My twin sister and I watched up until Jill finds the zombie munching on some dude’s neck, a scene that scared us so badly that we were deathly terrified of zombies for six years. Imagine two dweeby twelve-year-olds sprinting up the stairs, begging the other to turn out all the lights in the house so that the lucky twin could make a break past the zombies that were surely waiting to get us.

So Resident Evil is certainly a franchise that has a history of scaring people. However, it has long been a complaint that the Resident Evil series jumped-the-shark in survival-horror with Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil 5 looks to keep the trend going. This is a major drag for fans looking for the scary “dog-through-the-window” moments of the original, as opposed to the waves of enemies and hoards of ammo in Resident Evil 4.

“Well, I think there is some truth to that," admitted Mike Webster, Marketing Director for Resident Evil 5, "but I think we have maintained a lot of the roots within the Resident Evil franchise. Certainly with regards to the story and the characters, and that’s what people love about the Resident Evil franchise. There’s plenty of things that makes Resident Evil very distinct, and there’s the element of fear and the ability to scare. There’s plenty of that in Resident Evil 5. I’ve experienced a lot of it. We’re just able to that in the light now, as well as the dark.”

But will Resident Evil 5 instill a crippling fear of the undead for pre-pubescent children? Or will the constant threat of Gary Glitter keep them holding their breath under seven blankets pretending that said blankets offer protection from a horrible fate? Not like I’d know anything about that ...

I'm pretty sure 9-year-olds aren't really CAPCOM's main focus with RE 5.

The RE games were pretty frightening for me, then it started to gradually fade as the series started to skew towards action-horror.

Real horror fans play Silent Hill :P

Or at least they did several sequels ago...

I think in order for the series to really get that scare factor going, they really need to add in more enemies like Dr. Salvador. When I heard that chainsaw reving, it scared the shit outta me knowing that bastard was just waiting to run up on me and gruesomly decapitate me.

While the actual gameplay aspect of the RE series has improved 10 fold with the over the shoulder view, it's disappointing to see the actual "HOLY SHIT" moments drift away into just an old memory.

My sister is 13 and RE4 scares the crap out of her, when she's not even playing it.

Of course I chalk this up to her being a wuss

From Resident Evil 4 onward, the franchise has changed fear with a new kind of feeling: insecurity. Yes, this was also present in the first games: a horde of zombies, many in out-of-nowhere moments, and you only have like two bullets... and no handgun. But RE4 played precisely with its known lack of ammo by inversing it.

In the village at the beginning of RE4, you start getting lots of ammo, and when accustomed to NOT having any, you instantly feel safe. Secure. You are a one man army, what could go wrong?? Spanish people, of all things, go wrong.

In my opinion, the new take on the franchise is a welcome one, and its been hinted at since as early as RE3: Nemesis, when the emphasis on action starts taking hold.

Yeah RE4's plenty scary. I think this is merely something to be said for the desensitization we go through as gamers. I dont even flinch going through SH2 anymore.

Ah, another babyface article! :D

The RE series is drifting towards a more action-y feel. Which I loathe.

Playing RE1 back in the day with a friend, probably twelve or thirteen years old, we got scared so bad by a zombie that bursts out of a closet that he reeled in shock, the cord on the controller pulled the Playstation off the desk and reset the game :)

Only scary thing in RE4 were those mutants at the end that flop around on the ground after you shoot them a couple times and regrow their body parts.

"9 year olds shouldn't be playing RE5 to begin with..."

So what? The point is, if this "horror" game can't even scare 9 yr olds, how can we call them scary at all?

in the words of a very near friend to me "CRY SOME MORE WAAAHHHHHHH!" the old resident evil games were not fun, just scary. If inventory management, and shite controls are fun to you then go play a rpg. Capcom did what needed to be done to resident evil with 4...MAKE A FUN GAME. Resident evil had gotten stale by the time the gamecube remake came out, and capcom saw this. I'm sure by the time resident evil 4 remake comes out for ps4 or xbox720 we will be sick of the formula and they will change it again on us. However, what they have right now is an excellent action game that is incredibly tense, with awesome gunplay. The reason RE1 worked so well was because it was the original thats why the dog scared you. Any one who says that when the 2 chainsaw witches bust through that wall in RE4 didnt scare the crap out of you is a liar. As far as I'm concerned you can take your old RE and shove it (or love it i forget which one).

This article is pointless. Resident evil 4 isn't any less scary you're just older and used to survival horror games, therefore exponentially less scared regardless of the level of fright found in the game

I think we need to bring more ideas for this purpose. Involvement of young people can be handy in this regard. I am happy to find a good post here. Thank you
