Resident Evil 5 producer is 'worried' about the West photo

It seems that many Japanese developers have lamented their country's position in the industry for the past several months, and Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi is no different. The Capcom man has recently shared fears of the West's impact in Japan, admitting that he now "worried."

"I'm worried about the movements of Western developers," confesses Takeuchi. "Japan is now their target - it's the last big marketplace. The truth is that Western studios are making great games, and they're going to continue to do so next year too."

Jun's main fear is that Japanese development won't catch up, claiming that: "It's not good if Japanese developers are making games that can't be enjoyed by Japanese people."

It seems that the so-called decline of Japanese game development is going to become an even hotter topic as the weeks progress, as more and more studios look towards the West. There's no denying that some of the most inventive and ambitious games -- titles like Portal, Braid and LittleBigPlanet -- have come from the West while many Japanese games have stuck to conventions, sometimes to their detriment.

Capcom, however, has nothing to worry about. I don't feel that any other publisher so consistently melds East and West together. RE5 will sell bucketloads, so I don't think Takeuchi needs to sell his house just yet.

If RE5 is half as fun as RE4 then they have nothing to worry about.

Japanese gamers need to expand their pallets. I can't understand how anyone could survive on a diet solely of JRPGs, "virtual novels" and "social interaction simulators." Some devs seem to get this, but unfortunately, for every Resident Evil 5 or Metal Gear Solid 4, there's a dozen or so "Quantum Fantastical Journey XVIIs" or "Princess Molesters."

I think RE5 will do amazing. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This game will sell wherever it gets put.

Capcom is awesome. They're probably my favorite Japanese software developer with the possible exception of Nintendo. Are the numbers as bad as these developers seem to indicate? I've seen a bunch of stories about Japanese developers being worried.. but I really don't understand it.

I notice that Japanese games are taking notes from western developers more and more, I wonder if this is helping to change the Japanese game palette at all. I hope so because I don't see any other way of the Japanese development teams making a comeback

Great job Jim, that title and header does merit to your Daily Mail-esque english roots, so tabloid-y and all.

Notice how many idiots missed the point that it's not about the game's African setting.

Capcom shouldn't worry. RE5 has everything America loves.

Zombies? Check.
Racially insensitive characters? Check.
Black people? Check.
White people with guns shooting black zombies? Check.

See, they'll sell tons of this game. It's a KKK's wet dream.

Yes Capcom is pretty good at discussing them self as a western company more so than any other Japanese developer. But lets take a step back a sec, does the most intuitive and ambitions games make the most money? No. So maybe innovation may not be the publishers first thought when throwing money to video game development. But Innovation has to start somewhere and Japan Studio which is owned by Sony seems to be doing some pretty inventive things such as Echocrom. But beyond that, I dunno. Do you consider MGS4 innovative? REZ5 innovative?

this is an overall issue with the entire eastern market that is not going to be fixed over night. Appealing to both markets though has never been an issue for the japanese developers before until this generation and it is only going to get much more worse going into the next few years. I just hope they don't lose the unique feel to the games they have. The real problem is the japanese public and the perception they have with FPS's and action titles that don't fit around the rigid styles they have grown into. Sony is in the best spot to really help change this with the PS3 and Killzone 2 this year and the eventual release of uncharted 2 as well.

@pascuz:

Just because a publisher is innovative doesn't exactly make it good. Take Mirrors Edge or even Fracture, they had really different things that many other games have never tried before but it wasn't exactly well done. So I think that a company that does the tried-but-true approach without being redundant then it deserves more sales (since you talk about money) than the shitty innovative game. And I consider Western developers much more risky when it comes to innovation take Valve, Jonathan Blow, Dice and Media Molecule are all Western and with the exception of Valve they all took a huge plunge in the sake of innovation, two not doing so well. I'm not saying Japanese developers don't innovate but I think that their way of innovation involve a bit less risk than certain Western developers.

Capcom should look towards Nintendo not towards the West. Make innovative games instead of generic brown shooters.

Yes, that's what we really need - The Japanese to start making more generic brown shooters like they have tried with MGS4 and Resident Evil 4/5.

To me, Capcom has always been practically the only Japanese developer who "gets" current-gen development. There have been a few other companies, most notably Sega and SquareEnix, but their games haven't been as consistently enjoyable and as high a quality to people on both sides of the Pacific. I'm happy to see a Japanese developer who is openly willing to advance their own game development techniques and learn from Western developers - even letting a Westerner head the rebirth of the Bionic Commando franchise - instead of just lamenting about how far behind Japanese developers are and sticking to last-gen platforms like the PS2 and Wii. I expected as much from Atlus, since they're a smaller company, but Japan's next-gen offerings have been very hit or miss outside of Capcom.

Screw Japan and the Japanese people. Japan doesn't need game developers, since apparently all they want is the same shit in a new box. Let the marketing teams handle that one, we have real games to make.

Capcom shouldn't be worried. Like others have already said, they blend Eastern and Western game development better than any other Japanese company and they have a bitchin '09 lineup.

I agree with "Clown" in that the controls in the demo are atrocious and very dated though one of the developers of RE5 said on Xplay that the controls CAN be modified to a "Gears of War" style of play i.e being able to shoot and walk at the same time. If so the game should be dope.

Also, as a black man I will agree that black on black crime will be very fulfilling in RE5 but its the few white "zombies" that will be receiving special attention. ::Cocks Shotty::

...thats a joke.

Wait so he's saying he's worried American developers will start selling their games in Japan? When is the last time any game not made in Japan has sold more than five copies there? And considering nobody is buying new consoles there, I don't think he has to worry about Japanese developers "falling behind", when PSP, DS, and maybe PS2/Wii are the only platforms they'll need to develop for (and nobody makes games for them other than the Japanese).

Sounds like something was lost in translation or something.
