Resident Evil 5 may have sold 5 million copies by now photo

Capcom seems to be doing pretty well for themselves during the economic downturn. According to their CFO, Kazuhiko Abe, the publisher has posted an eleven percent operating profit for the 2008 fiscal year. Resident Evil 5 likely played a significant role in achieving those numbers.

While speaking at the Reuters Technology Summit in Tokyo, Abe revealed that the action/horror title attained sales of 4.4 million units in March with another 570,000 sales for April. Sales numbers for May have yet to be counted but they're so close to hitting the five million mark that they might as well have called it by now.

I've always been aware that the lion's share of sales occur within the first few weeks of a game's release, but these numbers really throw that idea into sharp focus. With a drop of over 87% sales, I suppose there's something to be said for early adoptors in the software sector of the games industry.

Killing Africans has never been so profitable.

I forgot who it was, but I remember a while ago a Japanese publisher said that Microsoft consoles weren't profitable. I'm just amazed at how the times change.

And a big congrats to Capcom for kicking ass this year so far in terms of sales. This will be one of their best years yet, what with the sales figures of Bionic Commando still out there.

Congratulations. Easily the most fun i've had on a console this year...well other than the UFC game.

Even in colonial times killing them was never profitable... it was, sadly, the enslaving part that made the money come in.

Damn, that is a lot.

Cool news for capcom then. But this doesn't make the wait for Dead Rising 2 any shorter. :(

Guess I'm one of the naysayers that should be sucking a dick, but RE5 is one the biggest disappointments of the year for me. Capcom is a great house with an incredible legacy and RE5 was okay-ish, but compared to what they could have done with that game? It's ass.

I'm still on the fence about RE5. I bought it opening night, played through it a little bit, and it hasn't come out of its box since. I think it might have to do with the fact that I skipped out on the last generation of consoles due to my infatuation with cstrike (I was 100% pc gamer for the ps2 generation) and thus never played any survival horror games. so, as you can imagine, the controls seemed really, REALLY archaic to me. I'm used to the run and gun style of left 4 dead, halo, and cod4 - it was too much of a change to not be able to shoot and move at the same time, or reload and move, or aim and move.

my roomie, who is a huge fan of the RE series and survival games in general, says that's part of the excitement. to me, it seems like RE5 creates suspense by giving the game shitty controls.

@FinnE: Welcome to the survival horror genre, where all characters control like boats in half-dried cement. It is rather frustrating, because you'd figure someone in a situation where things are trying to kill them would say 'self, we should probably run while shooting' and do it.

I'm not the worlds biggest RE fan but I tried out the demo and it wasn't half bad. I still haven't bought it and probably won't but well done capcom.

@WarZombie: They still arent. MS sells them at a loss ;).

RE5 wasn't bad, but it felt more like a spin off than a proper RE title.

Sad. I gave up on this game last night when my stupid AI partner wouldn't hide from a giant sun laser thing. Also, I hope these sales don't validate Capcom's idea that those controls are acceptable.
