Resident Evil 5 is SO RACIST: The idiocy begins photo

Well, we knew this was going to happen and yet I'm still moved to a sad shaking of my head at the myopic nature of humanity. Predictably, a black interest Site in the form of Black Looks has jumped on Resident Evil 5 and its foreign setting, getting its digs in early before other self-segregation organizations take a piece of the attention cake. See, because Resident Evil 5 DARES to have black people in it, it is obviously racist, according to one reactionary writer:

The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white man’s job is to destroy them and save humanity…

This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young… fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.

[Hit the jump for more on this. Thanks to TheGoldenDonut.]

This is just ... ridiculous. Ridiculous proof that racism will never go away because certain people, both black and white, refuse to be objective and are unable to see a game set in Africa/India/Brazil without instantly, guiltily or selfishly assuming its all about race and "shooting them thar darkies." Racism isn't a one-way street, and it's attitudes such as the one above that are more "problematic on so many levels," than a game that has the guts to set itself in a location outside of white America.

Do I even need to tear this person's pathetic post apart? Not really. It doesn't take a genius to see that the game isn't about "destroying black people," it's about destroying zombies/ganado who for once happen to be black. It does, however, take a really self-centered, perhaps even racist individual, to see it as "the white man killing MY people," and this clearly what the writer sees in Capcom's game. I can pretty much be secure in my assumption that she has never had a problem with the fact that all the enemies save one in Resident Evil 4 were white. Scarcely a black face among them.

The blog about Resident Evil 5 looks like it was written by a straight up racist. She seperates white and black people, distinguishing between them. She ignores the previous games where enemies were mostly white because it doesn't fit in with her blinkered world view. She accuses what she believes to be non-black games developers of ulterior motives and she writes for a Site that's all about black interests. Were the roles reversed, she'd be called a bigot and I wish to call her one now. Oh, and I noticed something else that might be worth pointing out -- please read her little blog post again. Notice anything in particular? It's subtle, but it's there.

That's right. She capitalizes the word "Black."

Not "white."

Bloody racist.

Personally, I hope its super racist. Like the end boss is named Slappy Waddymellon and you have to stop him from raping white women. As luck would have it, earlier in the level you picked up a fried chicken gun and malt liquor grenades. The end FMV could be Chris lynching every person he couldnt ship back to his southern plantation to pick cotton for him.

Resident Evil 6 could be full of jewish zombies. A headshot wont kill them, youve got to blow the yarmulke straight off their head, the source of their evil jew zombie powers.

Seriously, if we're gonna be racist, it should be old time racism. None of this vague shit.

Hear Hear, well said Jim. We all saw this coming and it's great everyone is uniting against this absolutely idiotic viewpoint.

Some people, like this misguided lady, don't seem to understand that in this day and age that pretty much everyone in the developed world are treated as equals; so why should it matter if the zombies are black instead of white for once?

In Resident Evil 4 I killed 914 white people and liked it so much that I have beat it twice, and working on a third time. Clearly, I hate all white Spanish people and hope for their demise by my hands. Unless it's okay to kill white people as long as you are white and the same for the blacks, of course. This may sound racist, but I want to be able to kill spooks in video games! Crackers are getting boring.

First of all, it is just a game! Second, Zombies can be any race. They don't have a choice of who to infect. They infect whoever is in the area, like in Resident Evil 2 and 3. Third, being racist about this game means that you shouldn't play it. Period.

True enough, I just wanted to use a "fresh new hate group" The KKK is so 1866.

Although chances are hed probably bash the fact that someone in the game is a homosexual, and well, Im sure he doesnt selectively hate people. If you hate, you hate just about everyone.

I could understand the claim if it was a different type of game, like an over-the-top law enforcement action title where we've seen some borderline racism before, but it doesn't really apply to the zombie/survival-horror genre. The idea of the zombie infestation taking over western countries/cities has been done to death, and the new setting is just the writers' attempt to take a unique approach to a genre that was running out of ideas.

Personally, I think setting the game in Africa is really refreshing, and sets up some potentially great story and gameplay mechanics we haven't seen before. But more on-topic, it could conceivably be used to make statements against racism or for other issues like foreign aid to African countries, etc. if the developers decide to tackle political issues with the game. It's ridiculous to think that it will instead be used to promote racism.

Interesting, so I wonder if she thinks GTAIV is okay, because this upcoming version has no playable black characaters, like San Andreas?

I'd just also like to note that the only black playable charcaters, to ever grace the RE series was one in RE Outbreak. This isn't such bad a thing. I feel the RE series has a broad cast of characters throughout. We've seen Kenneth J Sullivan (RE1) end up as black zombie food, and Officer Marvin Branagh end up as a black zombie in RE2. Knowing this, I think black characters have had a good run in the series. Better to be represented than not.

Its true though, I don't recall any spanish folk complaining about RE4 at all. Seeing the proximity of Spain to Africa, I can see where Capcom might be going with the RE story, for purely geographical reasons and remoteness of the T/G Virus to be exposed, unknown without contest. If its okay for white zombies in RE4, it should be okay for RE5 to have black and white ones.

Should be interesting what Capcom have to say, but I'm sure we're are all behind them, we love RE5 and want it more than MGS4.

As soon as the trailer was release, I was thinking "Oh god, some one is going to pull the race card".

I mean, you could claim racism on GTA, because the protagonist kills opposite races. The thing is, Why does it matter? As long as the story is good and the gameplay is solid it shouldnt. Techinically, they arent even human. So whats the big deal? I am a minority myself, but I dont use that as a clutch to get what I want. These whinny people are annoying and make life alot harder/complicated then they should be. Leave your racism in the past, and lets move on and play some games.

Ok, time for everyone to chill out a bit:

As a person who is
- Black
- An Avid Gamer
- A huge RE (or capcom in general) fanboy,

the screens DID bother me when I saw them at first; I was bothered by the RE4 scenario as well - not because they're racist (which they're not, in my opinion) but because game designers so rarely include playable black characters at all. And when we do get minority playable characters, look at how they usually turn out? Remember, this is the company that brought us characters like T-Hawk, Dee-Jay, Balrog...

I'm not defending the weirdo with the blog, but don't be surprised that people are getting upset when one of the few times a game character looks like them, its a group of mindless zombies whose job it is to be shot in the head for 40 hours.

I strongly agree with ryanxp.

The only problem is the lack of black and other minority protagonists. Certainly not an issue exclusive to video games, the problem is far far worse in television, and movies to an extent. The problem is that while its perfectly fine to have a white guy slaughter a thousand other white zombies, the only way a minority can make it into such a game is a mindless horde of shack living savages.

To triple post, I actually found a good list, claiming that since 1990 there have only been 11 noteworthy black main characters.

Actually pretty funny in a sad way, since it includes Michael Jackson from Moonwalker and Shaq starring in Shaq Fu.

There is a problem with race in video games, just not what this person who got upset at a 3 minute trailer is aiming at.

Yeah, that was *remarkably* bad. You should check out Tattoo Assassins, though. Far worse.

My deal is, WHY does it matter at all? If your hero/protagonist is female, male, black, white, Asian - who gives a rip? A person's art or work shouldn't have to be altered to cater to a certain demographic. I'd hate for things to get to a point where someone feels the need change the way they original envisioned their own character because he's concerned about public response about race.

Male or female, whatever race - if something has a decent story and is well-made, I'll get into it. I could personally care less how and what races are 'represented'. I just want to shoot some effin' zombies.

I mean, I seriously think we're going to see race issues until race . . . stops being an issue. White AND black pride are retarded; your race isn't an accomplishment, it's a genetic expression. Do something good and be proud of IT.

Stuff like this just pisses me off. Double stardards towards blacks or any other minority is ridiculous and racist. No one, not even honkys, cares if the zombies or the crazed maniacs are white, but the second a black person comes on screen and says "I'MA EAT YOU", it's obviously a reference to how George Bush hates black people and everyone is racist. People like the people at that blog make black people sound like discriminatory nimrods.

Haha, awesome. It's sad that the roles of racism have almost reversed. I'm curious to see what my bosses response to this game will be (he's black). Everytime a customer calls and hangs up, or walks into the store and then walks out without shopping he starts ranting about how they left because they saw a black man working there. Couldn't possibly just be someone who dialed a wrong number and hung up out of embarassment, or it couldn't possibly be someone who entered the wrong store. <.<

As a gamer who is:
a) anti-racist
b) anti-gay

What I'd really like for RE6 is some gay zombies. Can't wait to kill me some zombie fag.

Let's slow things down for a second now, let's get serious.

The potential for perceived racism is obviously very high here. This was a no-brainer, but Capcom knows better. We have ratings boards, there's no way a racist game would ever see the light of day and that's exactly why people need to shut the hell up. It's just a setting.

I wonder... how many gamers are there, and how many are black, and how many are offended by this who wereN'T offended by previous RE4 games? I'm talking about those who would feel uncomfortable killing black zombies but felt fine killing white zombies? Is that racist? It's not my place or yours to say.

The biggest (real) problem I can see here would be white people who are already racist enjoying this game just a bit more than the rest of us. The game might need some intentionally anti-racist message in there to keep these guys down. And... I guess that's all I have to say.

Let's set aside the question of racism for a moment and consider the sheer tone-deafness of the game. Africa is a continent on which thousands of people die every day of curable diseases and starvation, on which there is an AIDS crisis, and on which horrible violence is, even as we speak, being committed on a large scale in Darfur. Meanwhile, first world westerners thrill to the experience of fictionalized disease and violence committed in a virtual Africa.

To set a zombie game on the African continent may or may not be racist, but it is certainly a travesty of judgment. That game bloggers don't understand this demonstrates an ignorance and insensibility that is mind-boggling.

Imagine if a French company, say Ubisoft, made a game called "Sky Terror Funtime" in which your job, as a jaunty anime terrorist called "Jacques Le Daring", was to try to fly as many planes into as many skyscrapers in a "generic North American country" as possible. Your points total would depend on how many rich businessmen you killed, with extra points for jet fuel immolation and suicides jumps. And then imagine Ubisoft released it on September 11th.

Would some Americans think the French were deliberately giving them a gigantic middle finger? Would they begin yelling, "France hates America". Yes, they would. And it wouldn't ultimately matter whether Ubisoft released the game purposely to piss off Americans or because they were oblivious.

Because at the end of the day, it's the obliviousness that is racist. It says, "I am entitled to be ignorant of your feelings and your concerns, because you don't matter." It is precisely this legacy of the white sense of entitlement, entitlement to ignore black humanity, that makes the difference between killing white zombies and killing black zombies. It is NOT the imagination of black gamers. It is history. Go read it.

How dare you accuse those who are offended by this game of racism. How dare you. To do so is to simply do what white people have always done; when anyone questions your actions, you respond with aggression and outrage built on your eternal false sense of entitlement.

BigBlackCar: How dare I accuse a racist of racism? How dare you presume to deny me the right to call out racism when I see it, just because I'm white. Your stereotyping of white people in your final paragraph pretty much says all that has to be said. You are no better than any other.

Your metaphor is flawed. Your Ubisoft title is clearly based on real world events. However, no zombie outbreak has ever happened in Africa (if indeed it IS set in Africa). That was a very poor tactic you pulled there.

And again, don't stereotype me again and lump me in with "all white people," because that is no less ignorant than a white person saying all black people are lazy, to say all white people are aggressive. Both are dumb generalizations.

Would you rather play RE5 or a game about going to Africa to cure disease and provide food? Maybe neither is racist but I certainly think RE5 would be more fun. Virtual God-Send: Africa Edition might give us a warm fuzzy feeling but it's not contributing to the problem in any tangible way (unless you count drawing the attention of thousands of lazy gamers who wont do anything about it anyway tangible).

And Bioautographical, do you think that Japanese game companies have no one in charge of localizing their game and making sure they aren't doing anything that would offend a North American audience? Have you heard of Phil Harrison? Are you aware of how many Americans and Europeans work for Japanese game companies? Take a look at the main character of RE5 and notice how western his features are, and then ask yourself again whether white western values have not influenced the construction of this game.

But to answer the question you whose answer you aren't interested in, Japan is one of the most racist countries in the world. Historically that racism has mostly been directed against Koreans, Thais, and Philippinos, for obvious geographical reasons, but contemporary Japanese racism against Africans is pronounced, as anyone who lives or who has travelled there will tell you.

Right, and your BS tripe earlier basically insinuates that whites have the market cornered on racism, which isn't true at all. Plus, a "North American" audience? Includes blacks, the last time I checked. America isn't a "white country". It's not a "black country". It's a capitalist country that loves its games, its TV, its movies, yet can't seem to enjoy them at all lest some extremist fringe group get its panties in a wad because waaaaaah anti-black/gay/female/Latino.

You proved my point, though - Asians can EASILY be racists. So can white people. So can Latinos. And, therefore, so can blacks. And that's exactly what this woman is - racist. Anyone who is going to sit there and "innocently" make differences in even the way she writes Black and white? Yeah, is an effin' racist.

Whites can be shot up en masse in a came with nary a complaint uttered (least of all by white people themselves). Involve blacks or a predominately black country and hell breaks loose. Hello, equality.

You amuse me.
