Resident Evil 5 getting 'Gears-like' control system photo

Capcom has taken on board concerns that Resident Evil 5's controls were the same as those of Resident Evil 4, which some critics feel is archaic compared to modern games. Confirming that the controls have now changed to a more "Gears-like" system, producer Jun Takeuchi stated that we'll see things in action at the Tokyo Game Show.

At E3, Takeuchi teased this announcement by telling us not to be surprised if the controls have altered by TGS. Looks like that forewarning was a prophetic one, as we look to get our hands on a much more modern-feeling game. Apart from the Gears comparison, no other details have been revealed, so we'll probably have to wait until October to see more.

Quite funny really, considering that Gears of War basically took Resident Evil 4's control scheme and added a cover system along with the ability to move and fire. Things have come full circle.

Hmm, seems like capcom are moving the resident evil series away from a survival horror game into a more action third person game.
And dear god, the destructoid homepage is now chock full of sterling posts!

That's why software patents are unnecessary and useless.. Greedy lawyers want game companies to patent their methods, claiming this would bring innovation to the gaming industry. All it would do would be to fill lawyer's wallets, while increasing production costs.

Yeah, I remember ol' Cliffy talking about the Gears dev. team playing RE4 and deciding it was a great approach to 3rd person play.

The Tank Controls were meant to be part of making the game quote unquote scarier.

i hope this means i can run and gun in a resident evil game now. i hated the slow walking/ stopping to shoot crap thats why i hated 4.

Great! I think a survival horror game where you have really effective combat controls will make the game more tense. They'll have to limit your ammunition and make sure the enemies are either plentiful or durable enough to still be a threat, but it will be scary because it's scary rather than because you have lame controls.

I don't believe it.

Am I finally going to have to start being nice to Capcom? Are they actually getting a little humility? Jesus fucking Christ. I think I'm going to have to take a dump on a kitten just to balance out the good and evil in the world.

NO! Truthfully, one of RE4's strengths was the ability to NOT MOVE during shooting. Why is this good? Because it adds fear and tension to the mix.

I hope this game doesn't feel generic now.

Why does a contrived, flawed control scheme add tension? It adds annoyance, if anything.

Don't care. If it helps me kill zombies more effectively, great. If not, oh well; I'll just kill zombies at a less efficient way.

I would rather not see a huge control scheme overhaul. That and it looks like the game has been in development far too long to implement any sort of cover system if you were to call it "Gears-like." If not that then what possibly could be so different about it?

I hope this is all just code for "you can walk while aiming your gun now."

I thought one of the meerits of NexGen gaming was that it would allow more freedom of movement whether it was sandbox shooter games or better character movement a la Assassins Creed.

I don't see how hindering movement is a step forward in anybody's eyes.

@lubczyk: Yeah I can't wait RE6 when we will be able to perform a triple front flip from a wall while sniping Zombies with a PSG-1.

I agree, actually. I thought the RE4 system was the best out of any game I've ever played, strafing or not. I don't want them to change that.

@Turbostraw

You know that's not what I meant. I want my characters to eventually be able to do things that a normal person could. You know, like jump onto or over a two foot obstacle, see things over his left shoulder, unless he's blind.

I don't want to control a character that couldn't figure his way out of a cardboard box without some special item being acquired. I want to be the hero in a videogmae, not an invalid.

I sort of think that RE4's control system suits the franchise better, what with not being about to move and turn and aim at the same time, a zombie could sneak up on you and wreck you. Added suspence.

I played through Resident Evil 1 and some of 3 and 4, and I think that the tank like controls make it more suspenseful. However, it is not so great when youre about to die and have no more herbs.

Sorta like Tomb Raider 1-6, "oh crap, oh crap, oh crap, boulder!"
