Are you the type that would rather conquer than cooperate? Tired of your partner dragging ass, taking the team down? You'll now be able to take out your frustrations on them with the upcoming new mode called "Versus."
Coming after launch, the Versus mode will be paid digital download content for Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network. It lets four players go at it online in two game types: Slayer's Rule and Survivor's Rule. Slayer’s Rule is a point-based game that challenges players to kill Majinis. In Survivor’s Rule, players hunt each other. Both one-on-one and two-on-two will be supported. And it's not just Chris and Sheva: two other secret characters will be announced soon. I bet you can guess who they'll be.
Release details: Versus will be available on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network a few weeks after Resident Evil 5 is available. Versus will be available for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE or $4.99 on the PlayStation Network.
[Update: Bad Capcom! We were originally told that the mode would be available on PSN for $3.99, but that's not the case. It's $4.99, so go find another dollar. The story has been updated accordingly.]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Money is tight now and I have to be way more picky about what I buy.
Because $60 just isn't enough for these assholes?
I can see the mode where you kill Majinis as a team working, but I can't grasp the idea of player vs. player.
You guys realize that RE5 will ship with more modes and extras than 90% of other similar games out there? We're already getting a shit ton of bang for our buck: Online Mercs!
Plus it's only $5! That's not bad at all for something that was never in Resident Evil to begin with.
(Yes, I know they're not making us pay for it, but it should be on the disc at retail)
Step 1: Cut the overall gameplay in half in comparison to their previous game (R4)
Step 2: Charge more for the latest game ($40 is now $60)
Step 3: Add in multiplayer content to the game, but make people pay for this as well
Hmm... wonder if they're in it for the money?
We all know who it is thanks to earlier posts, but this just sorta nails it 100%.
Fucking DLC. I don't even want a Versus mode and this pisses me off.
What the industry is doing now is trying to see how far they can go with DLC. Charging for costumes, map packs, versus modes is just game companies testing the waters to see what they can get away with.
Let's say that you are so mad at this that you decide to not buy Resident Evil 5. The people that do buy it might not mind paying for the extra modes. All Capcom sees is that a high percentage of people who buy the game also purchase the online extra versus modes. This just makes them see that this selling model is a good one.
Now lets say everyone who is angered by this still picks up the game and DOESN'T BUY the extra modes. Capcom will see that charging for the extra modes causes a low percentage of people to actually buy the DLC, and thus the development dollars they put into making it isn't worth the low percentage of people that actually purchased it.
I'm no analyst, but this makes some sort of sense to me. I'd say make your RE5 purchasing decisions on what they offer on disc...and its totally ok to NOT buy what they sell on DLC if it's not worth it to you. Personally, I'm probably going to get it cause I'm a RE fanboy...but I'll probably play it only a couple of times before going back to L4D.
Good point. People must NOT buy this DLC.
This is a slippery slope we are on. If Capcom gets away with this, who knows what companies will try next. Will we see a point where half the single player levels be on the disc, and then you have to pay for the rest of the chapters?
Games for years have had multiplayer and single player together. Even crappy multiplayer that is tacked on in budget games is included in the retail release.
Think about games like Gears of War 2. They give you online co-op, splitscreen co-op, competitive multiplayer, and horde mode. We could see the end of games that give you your money's worth if developers think they can get away with crap like this.
On singleplayer, I don't mind the controls at all, but use them in the multplayer arena, where most players expect, and probably demand, fast paced action and a sense of excitment, the game mechanics fail miserably at that task. I want excitment soaked matches when I go onine, not slow, clunky game play. I know for sure that the mode will bore me within the first match, it's basically promoting camping, which is awful.
Not only is it a greedy way of getting our money, it's just out of place in a game like RE5. mecenary mode I can understand, but I can't get around the reason why they would think this would work with a control scheme like the one RE5 has. You'd just get bored, and fustrated, fast.
The argument here is that while you have to pay, it is still cheap, it is still more gameplay. The problem with that as has been stated above is in the level of absurdity. There needs to be a major outcry against this kind of shit. This is something the should CLEARLY be on the disk. After tax, Im already paying $65 for your game. It should not be anticipated that I would even consider paying for an additional multiplayer mode so close to launch. As stated before, this reeks of the decision to pull the Multiplayer so they can make a clean $5 from their core audience of day one purchasers.
Im still picking up the game day one. But as soon as Im done, I'm trading it in. Im fine with additional content. I used the additional places in Oblivion. I loved Operation Anchorage. Lost and the Damned, while short was entertaining. Even map packs Im ok with, such as CoD4, where I get even more gameplay, or Burnout Paradise, where the new cars dont make that much of a difference, but are there for fun, and they've given us so much that they apparently believed should have been in the game (the bikes and day/night cycle). But a tiny extra single player level, costumes, an epilogue or ending to the game (Prince of Persia or the Brotherhood expansion of Fallout 3, the latter of which I will admittedly, yet grudgingly purchase) or bullshit like horse armor? No. Sorry companies, Im not buying into bullshit. I know what I do and dont need. This speaks down to me as a consumer. This is getting out of hand.
I have Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid: Online and Call of Duty: 4 and WaW. There are plenty of other mulitplayer games for me to play Capcom, and you think I want to pay for your mode, when the standard combat in RE in no way fits a competitive gaming style? No, I dont. I've been playing games against others for too long to know a good formula from a bad one, and while the slower paced Resident Evil 4 style will fit a single player campaign just fine, it will probably not fit the generally frantic movement required for a good, fair multiplayer game (See Gears or MGO for 3rd person multiplayer done right). And to be honest, 4 player deathmatch? If I wanted that, I'd break out the N64 and play Goldeneye.
I might be wrong about this. It could be great. But there's no way in hell that Im going to spend $5 to find out. Get real Capcom, we as gamers may be spendthrifts and love the core games, but we aren't stupid, so stop treating us as such, or we will go play something else.
Anywho, This is the stupidest idea Capcom has had. If people can justify buying this then go ahead and buy it, but I think this is such a fucking cash in. If this was free, it would be a different story, but its not they are charging 4.99. Here in Canada sometimes games sell for 69.99 depending on where you go, I already think that's alot, so why would I spend an extra 5 bucks for a half-assed multiplayer mode with only 4 players. There are a ton of other great multiplayer games out there that are well polished, I want to know from Capcom what makes this stand out from the rest???
Your points are a bit off.
Step 1: Cut the overall gameplay in half in comparison to their previous game (R4)
RE4 will be about the same length as RE5. RE4 speed runs can beat the game around 3 hours.
Step 2: Charge more for the latest game ($40 is now $60)
Every other developer/publisher is doing this. What's wrong?
Step 3: Add in multiplayer content to the game, but make people pay for this as well
You don't have to pay for online mercs, or online coop. That's free. An upgrade from RE4.
Reasons why it actually sucks:
It's awful stop and shoot PVP that you have to pay for
It's so close to the release it's rather sleazy
That's it. You don't have to buy it. "OMG I WILL NOT BUY THIS GAME BECAUSE OF THIS" is being very over-dramatic.
For a Resident Evil game, this sounds like a stupid idea.
Yeah we pay for extra features, but not stuff that should just be included on the disk (or in this case, stuff that shouldn't have been included at all).
It probably will. I have to ask the general public though: "Would you entertain this prospect more with walk-and-gun controls?"
