Here's a little oddity to chew on this morning -- Resident Evil 5 has been "confirmed" for the Wii -- not by Nintendo, not by Capcom, but by Sega. The surprising sort-of-non-announcement came from Sega of America's president, Simon Jeffrey, who let the idea slip while talking about Nintendo's current focus and its attitude toward the "core" demographic.
"The Wii's selling incredible amounts of hardware, but Nintendo knows it needs to expand the demographic. It needs to connect with the core gaming demographic," Jeffrey stated, before adding: "Resident Evil 5 - when that happens on the Wii that's going to help."
Capcom's rather amusing response was to "announce" some upcoming Sega products: "We have nothing further to announce regarding Resident Evil 5 at this time. Did you hear about the Sonic MMO, though, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS and Megadrive? And they're bringing back the Dreamcast! Because it was brilliant."
For his part, Jeffrey is claiming that the mention of RE5 was a mere slip of the tongue and that nothing had been confirmed "yet." This is Capcom, however, and I have little doubt that they are thinking about RE5 on the Wii. If they can port Dead Rising, they can sure as Hell port a new Resident Evil. Knowing Capcom, that's exactly what they'll do.

"Resident Evil 4 HD starring Chris Redfield" confirmed?
I can hear the Wii players saying it now "Graphics aren't everything. Waggle is better on RE5."
...but I can see if you only have a Wii why you would.
I love how every now and then the "old Jack" comes out :P
RE4 was a hit on the GC/Wii/PS2, right? It looked amazing, aside from the "handicap" of no HD and some low textures. All they'd have to do with RE5 is take down the lighting (or simplify it), reduce some textures and bam. RE5 on the Wii that looks amazing. Waggle could ruin it, but hopefully Capcom would learn a little from No More Heroes and keep it simple.
Besides, since when was a Resident Evil game about superior graphics? I thought it was about going around getting scared by zombies, shootin stuff, solving puzzles, and enjoying the characters/story.
Granted, I would hate to see how much the graphics would have to be watered down, but the Wii version of 4 was the most fun because of the perfect Wii controls. For what it's worth, I haven't played any other Wii game that felt so good as RE4, and I trust Capcom to do it right.
Also, I find it funny that people are saying any attempt to port this to the Wii would involve "dumbing it down." Everything I've heard points to RE5 basically being an expansion pack for RE4. RE4 was a Gamecube game that was "dumbed down" for a PS2 port, and then revved up for a successful Wii port. Why would it be so crazy for RE5 to come out for the Wii with RE4-style optional waggles?
Oh, that's right. PS360 fanboys are scrambling to maintain a sense of superiority. Why can't you just be happy that more gamers get to experience RE5?
Lol, I should have worded myself better.
Let me use a Dead Rising example again. If you played it on the 360 you would know that the large amounts of zombies on screen made it a fucking great experience. If you take away that key element you would be left with a shallow experience. The same will go for RE5.
Also, RE4 was a last gen port. It should look great on the Wii.
Controls aren't the thing, have you seen the graphic-locales and amount of enemies on screen? Regardless as long as it doesn't sacrifice the quality of the PS3 and Xbox version I'm all for everyone having some RE5 love.
Capcom has said that they deliberately showed stuff that was similar to RE4 so the people playing the demo would be more familiar and comfortable with the little play time they got. I think when they really show more of it, it's going to differentiate itself a lot more from RE4. I really doubt they'll even have online co-op on the possible Wii version for example (though I'm sure they could do local).
I think it's a little hypocritical that your already calling RE5 a RE4 expansion pack after just seeing a demo while simultaneously calling people out for ragging on the Wii version of Dead Rising.
I agree. I really hope the Dead Rising port doesn't completely cut down on the experience. Ditto with RE5. However, we haven't seen more than low res. shots of Dead Wiising yet. Let's wait and see.
I suppose you're partially right on this, although I think the situations are slightly different. You're probably right that RE5 has more than we've seen, but we know substantially more about RE5 than we do about a DR port on the Wii. Basically, all we know about DRWii is that it's a port of DR for the Wii. Stuff has been coming out about RE5 for a long time, and I based my assumptions on the large amount of info available.
Another thing: while people were ragging on the DR port, I was just using the expansion pack talk as shorthand. I'm actually quite excited about RE5, and I was just trying to say that it seems as closely related to RE4 as RE2 and RE3 were to RE1. I really want to play it, which is why I'm talking here in the first place. I don't care if it gets ported to the PC or the Wii; I just want access.
Others were completely damning the DR port ("dumbfounding" "dumbed down" "fucking retarded"), while, like I said, I was just talking about the overall gameplay of RE5 with the expansion pack talk.
1. We know more about RE5 than we do about the DR port.
2. I was just trying to talk about the overall playstyle of RE5, while comments about the DR port were wholly disparaging.
I think calling me hypocritical is a bit of a stretch.
The sad thing is that nearly every gamer out there is so far up his own ass, worried about what his so-called friends (who would likely abandon him without hesitation if the chips were down, by the way...) are going to say about him if they catch him playing something like Zack and Wiki, that he exclusively plays games filled with blood, tits, and ultra-detailed, ultra-brown graphics, regardless of whether or not they're any good.
It's a fucking joke.
anyway I don't think it's gonna happen, but I'd love to see it on the Wii and/or PC. I don't like analog controls for those kind of games and Resi4 on both Wii and PC was great!
Yeah, I hate the whole casual/hardcore divide. It's bullshit propaganda first put forth by Nintendo, so that they can act like their tapping a whole new demographic. Next, PS360 fanboys started using it to make themselves feel superior despite Wii's market dominance.
There is no casual/hardcore divide. There are good games, and there are bad games. The casual gamers I know play Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and the newest Madden, while the hardcore gamers I know mostly play games on the PC, Wii, and DS (or older systems). Are my friends representative of everyone? Hells no, but they demonstrate just how stupid this arbitrary divide is.
Preach on, my brother. I shed a tear from the truthitude on display there.
Well now it's potentially kinda like that, only the Wii has waggle and the potential to give a new twist to ports from the "graphically" next-gen consoles.
Unfortunately, ports for the Wii have been mostly mediocre efforts, but considering the Wii's success, I wouldn't be surprised to find more PS3/XBOX 360 blockbusters sneaking their way onto the Wii.
