Resident Evil 4 Wii sales edge out GameCube version photo

Remember when there was only one version of Resident Evil 4? I played the sh*t out of my GameCube copy of Resident Evil 4, thinking it was the best thing ever at the time. When the PS2 version launched, I scoffed and continued playing the GameCube version. Now, when the Wii version was announced, and I heard that there was 1:1 gun aiming with the Wii Remote, I was definitely interested. Now I think that's the best version.

The Wii version moves ahead of the GameCube version, according to Capcom's million seller list, which was just updated. Even two years after the original had run its course, the Wii version has managed to move over 1.6 million copies. I can only imagine that many of those purchases were from people just like myself -- people who loved the original.

Get this, though: Somehow the PlayStation 2 version has sold more than the Wii version, now sitting at 2.1 million copies sold. What the crap?

The best selling Resident Evil is the 5th, released this year for Xbox 360 and PS3. Combined, it has moved 5 million copies.

I have the RE4 PS2 version and it is really good. I like the added content that they did from the GC version. However RE4, wii is the best version for sure in terms of controls.

* The problem with wii games is that almost all donīt worth $50 compared with $60 game in PS3/360. But 30$ for one of best games in PS2 era, with good controls, worth.

It makes sense that PS2 is the best selling version still - it came out to a massive install base (many of which didn't own GameCubes) and was the "latest and greatest" version of Resident Evil at that point in time with expanded content and a proven track record.

But that doesn't diminish the fact that Wii sales are spectacular. The game was more than 2 years old when released on that console, but still managed to rack up 1.6 millions sales? Not too shabby for a quick and easy port...

Shame that the only new, original RE content Wii owners seem to be getting are the on-rails rehashes of existing games. While I like the Chronicles spin-offs, they really don't replace a "real" RE experience.

I have the PS2 version, and it sure is ugly compared to the Wii and Gamecube. I had it on Gamecube (bought RE4 on release day!), but it was stolen a few years back and I never replaced it. :/
Glad to see this game isn't forgotten. One of the best (if not THE best) from the last generation of games.

I bought it for Wii off a cousin (USED GAMES OH NOES), and the control is brilliant. Much better than the GCN controls!

This has always been one of my favourite Wii games. I just loved the vast amount of stuff to do in it. There's the first run-thru on normal, then the 2nd run through on the hardest difficulty and then the multiple runs with that infinite-ammo rocket launcher... =D

And mercenaries... Mmm <3

The only reason I bought a Gamecube was for this and Twilight Princess, both of which were released on Wii. Feeling betrayed by Nintendo for releasing superior versions on a console I didn't own, I have since turned my back on Nintendo.

@ pascuz46

Not only the controls, but the Wii version also has all of the PS2 extras, so it is hands down the superior version.

I can understand it selling well even if its a couple years old.

It was a fantastic game already when I played it on the 'cube. The visuals are still good compared to many Wii titles. The Wii controls make so intuative to play. It has all the PS2 version's extras, and it completely eliminates the button mashing sequences during QTE's and cutscenes and replaces them for reactionary motion controls.

@Grandmas Boy .... Er.. Wasn't Twilight Princess for the GameCube released a couple of weeks AFTER the Wii version? And also, Nintendo released RE4 on the Wii? What?

@Agnates: yes I did purchase it at the end of it's lifecycle. Traded an mp3 player for it as I already owned an iPod. Also owning a PS2 and an Xbox at the time, I figured why not grab a gamecube, since it was bundled with Double Dash. Long story short, I don't feel there were as many awesome titles on the system, compared to the other two.

This is certainly the best version of the game. Additionally, it is actually a much better title than Resident Evil 5 overall. I really feel Capcom took a step backwards, and hope their next effort captures some of what made RE4 great (though I still hope they bring a greater emphasis on puzzles back).

@Grandmas Boy - You bought the console and got to play the games you bought it for. Doesn't sound like anybody got cheated to me.

On topic, the control scheme in Resi4 Wii was superb, to the point where Resi5 actually feels like a backwards step. Let's have a Wii version, Capcom!

RE4 on the Wii is the best version of the game in absolutely every single way. It has all the content, it has much better controls, and you can still use a GameCube controller. It deserves the sales it got.

And who says mature games on the Wii won't sell?

Nice RE4 is still one of my favorite games of all time. It puts RE5 to shame.

I wouldn't say RE4 puts RE5 to shame as some have said, but it's definitely the better game. One of my all time favorites.

If RE4 didn't kick so much ass RE5 never would have moved that many units.

I own 3 copies of RE4. One for each console. Won't buy it for the iphone (wtf). And yeah, the Wii version was definitely my favorite. Close call between GC & PS2 but i think I'll have to go with the initial experience. You never forgt your first time. The Wii version is basically the best of both worlds. GC+ quality graphics & the nice added content from the PS2 version.

PS2 outselling the GameCube just shows you how bad the GameCube is and how awesome the PS2 is.

I played the Gamecube version and the later PS2 port of RE4 to death, so while I eventually picked up the Wii version too, I haven't been able to bring myself to play it yet.

I did pick up and play RE5 quite a bit as well. While its campaign mode isn't as good as RE4, RE5's Mercenaries mode is leaps and bounds ahead of RE4. Overall, I think each is about as good as the other.

How is it surprising that the PS2 version has outsold the "Wii Edition"? PS2 has a larger install base, more of those owners (as a percentage and in quantity) are likely to be interested in the game, and the Wii version plays like crap. Seriously, who the fuck thought it was a good idea to make you aim the camera with the analog stick and then point around the screen with the remote to shoot?

I played that crap for 5 minutes and can't imagine I'd ever pick it up again. Maybe I'd lay down some money for an "Old Play Controls" version that has the true widescreen support, 480p, and the added content from the PS2 edition. Just glad I didn't pay money for the load of crap that is RE4 Wii Edition. It's absolutely terrible. Just find an old copy for GameCube if you have any interest in the game and don't particularly care about the added modes from the PS2 port. If you do care about them, get the PS2 version.

Got to say I was quite surprised at the 5 million RE5 moved.
