Resident Evil 4: Wii edition now has a price

Resident Evil 4: Wii edition now has a price photo
     Resident Evil

Capcom, that wonderful company that I adore so much, has listed on their official store the pricing on the much anticipated port of Resident Evil 4 that is the talk of message boards everywhere (OK, so maybe it isn't). Now for the bargain price of just $29.99, you too can play what the rest of us enjoyed on the GameCube back in 2005.

Not to detract from what I consider to be a perfect game in all respects, but come on, Nintendo/Capcom. I expect more from my all time favorite game series, than to see it whored out like this (same game, Wiimote slapped on).

If there is a silver lining to be found in any of this, it's that you will only have to wait until June to do it all over again.

I've actually never played RE 4 all the way through, so Gawd dayum, boy! I'mma buy me a Resident Evil game for the Wii!

It cost money to add waggle to a game, ya know. Waggle engineers using the latest in cutting edge waggle-adding technology do their best so the player can look like a spastic waggling tool.

That could explain the pricing.

On the one hand, it's good that a (relatively) broader audience will get to play RE4, but this sounds like a pretty low-budget port. At least they aren't charging full price for it. I'd definitely like to try it, even if I heart the laser sight.

Well, didn't have a Gamecube or PS2 in 2005, so I never played it. So, pending good reviews, I'll happily pick it up.

I'm tired of ports

@mmorris

There are times when I feel the same way. Other times, I'm in a more forgiving mood. I can appreciate how much money it would cost to remake a game for each system, and I try to keep that filed in the back of my mind when I cut loose.

However, games are expensive, and we deserve better.

-> Matthew Mac: Don't bother to wait. It'll be pretty much exactly the same as the other versions(ie. badass), just with wiimote aiming, and other minor control updates. So unless you hate aiming your wiimote like poison or something, $30 is a good deal for this.

-> mmorris: I'm tired of people bitching about ports. Don't like it, don't buy it.

Based on the graphics of many wii games already, I think adding waggle and getting it to work well isn't too easy. 10 bucks more than your average value title for that programming on a game I never played is quite a bargain.

I'm a bit taken back by how many of you never having experienced the GameCube version. Did you not know that it was touched by the hand of God himself?

Please buy any version you can get your hands on, before I fall on my sword, and scream unto the heavens something epic like "Why have you forsaken RE?"

Personally I'm looking forward to this game more than any game on the Wii outside of the forever on the horizon Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3. That speaks more of the Wii's crappy lineup than my fervor for RE4.

I don't even care about waggle controls. I just always wanted to play the extra content in the PS2 version but didn't want to play with the crappier graphics. Now we get the better graphics AND proper widescreen to boot.

That said, I'm not in any rush to play it and will probably snag a copy when it's under $20. I'm just glad that it'll exist when I do feel like playing it :p

I just can't believe that Capcom isn't doing a port of Okami for the Wii. I held off playing the PS2 version because I really thought it was going to happen. The game was destined for the Wii but got released to critical acclaim and retail apathy on PS2. You'd think they'd want to give it a 2nd shot on a platform that is in desperate, desperate need for ANYTHING that doesn't suck ass. Okami got lost in the PS2 library but would be a standout on the drought ridden Wii.

Okami was a commercial failure, but a fantastic game. If Capcom wants to turn it around and make money, they should put it on the Wii. It would be awesome.

Like Skullivan said, I'll pro'lly pick it up when it's under $20, just for the extra content that they put in the PS2 version that was absent in the GC version. I didn't wanna play the game in any less quality than I was used to on the GC version, so I never bothered.

Also, w/ the Wiimote, maybe I can finally beat The Mercenaries and get the God-damed Handcannon.

I love the picture.

Anyways, when my Gamecube broke, I actually spent $100 to get a second system just for Resident Evil 4. I think that is the best version of the game, even though it doesn't have the extras that the PS2 port does.

From what I can tell based on video footage alone, the Wii port looks to be much easier, at least in respect to aiming. But whatever, as long as people who missed out on such an amazing title play it in one form or another, that's all that matters.

i really wanna know how this game will play on the wii. one of the defining characteristics of the original was that your weapon's aim speed was relevant to the type of gun you held. this made weapon choice an actual thought instead of just "hey, this fires more which means it automatically better!" you had to think which gun you used because you wouldn't be able to react as quick with some guns as others.

with the addition of wiimote aiming i don't see this being a factor at all, thereby completely bypassing one of the best and most strategic aspects of the original game. if every gun can be moved from one side of the screen to the other lickity split, it'll make the entire game much easier and destroy the dynamic tension built during hectic attacks. on the other hand, if it involves some sort of time delay as your cursor slowly moves to where on the screen you point it, people will not understand and get pissed.

i don't see this being as fun as the original at all. and if you want the extra content, seriously, the ps2 version isn't bad at all. in fact, it's quite comparable to the gc version. just 'cause your a nintendo fanboy doesn't mean you should hate on a game that was overall better due to additional content even if it did have slightly (and i mean VERY slightly) scaled-down graphics. and shit, if you like graphics that much why the hell are you playing games on the wii anyway? hypocrites.

@ Gameboi

"Whored out"? I dunno, man. That statement reeks of snobbery. I replay RE4 about once a year; I have no qualms about doing it with a Wiimote this time, especially not if it combines the true widescreen of the PS2 version with the sharper textures of the Cube version. Do you call your ex-girlfriend a whore when she starts dating someone else?

Really?

*sigh* Never mind.

apparently it takes a lot of development money to add the lil "wiimote shake right" and "wiimote shake left" animations to a title. i can TOTALLY see why they aren't selling it for the even more appreciation-to-the-fans-who-have-already-bought-it-at-least-once-if-not-twice-friendly price of $20!

Is is so hard to like, patch the wiimote into the re4 GC edition? No, dude buy a new game with the same graphics.

This is for the people who never played it on GC or PS2, not for people who already bought it. The game didn't do as well as Capcom would have liked, so they're hoping they'll be able to get a little money out of it on the Wii.

I preordered this at Gamestop last week (should have told the Dtoids about the price point but thought everyone knew about $30) so I could pick up a Pokemans stylus (retail bastards). Didn't finish the Cube version and wanted to try the PS2 version. RE4 just won't die.

After this game, please NO MORE PORTS. For the love of all that is decent and respectful, stop shoveling warm Wii turds on our laps (charging $50 for the show).

@ brainderailment

Actually, it's not hard, it's impossible. Changing a control scheme is more than just a cut-and-paste job. Thousands of lines of code have to be rewritten for controller input, graphical assets regenerated for the user interface, and the entire executable has to be recompiled for the new hardware (whether you like it or not, the Cube and the Wii have some major architectural differences). A "patch" for the Cube version of the game - if it were even possible on the Wii - would be huge and buggy as hell, as it would have to encompass half the game's content just to clear out the dependencies in the code.

And that's not including the PS2 stuff they're throwing back in. Please stop acting as though a port is some sort of personal insult. If it weren't for ports, you never would have played Rez (which was a Japan-only Dreamcast release before American gamers had a chance to salivate over it on the PS2). I see nothing wrong with a publisher taking advantage of new hardware that has the potential to enhance an existing experience. Would you prefer if they just sat and waited until the perfect console came out, and then released the game only once? Then you'd better pick a new hobby, because no one would ever release another game.

Developers and publishers are not faceless machine intelligences, adhering only to some ineffable alien logic, that exist only to make your life difficult. Devs make games because they are passionate about it, and publishers sell those games because someone out there will buy them. Do not mistake efficient business for laziness. If the game ships loaded with bugs and inconsistent presentation, then you can call them lazy. But that won't happen, because this is Capcom we're talking about here.

Please try to be more rational.
