Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami may have birthed us a famous horror series, but he is currently spurning it. The ex-Capcom man is refusing to play Resident Evil 5, claiming it will cause him too much stress to do so.
"I probably won't play it. I won't like it, because it's not going to be the game I would have made," explains Mikami. "It'll just cause me stress if I play it. I think it could be fun for gamers to play it, but not for someone who has developed Resident Evil games.
"If I see anything in Resident Evil 5 that isn't done well, I'll be angry!"
And you wouldn't like Shinji Mikami when he's angry.
Seriously though, it must be difficult for a game maker once a franchise has been wrested from his hands, having to watch other people develop it and take the IP in directions you had never intended. It would be like a musician being forced to hand over his instruments to someone else and watching a totally different person play under their name.
Still, Mikami is with Platinum now, a company that is showing amazing potential. Perhaps it's best that he's devoting his time to Suda 51 projects and secret Sega shenanigans, rather than waste time playing those no good videogames.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Still, that's weird hearing that from him, when he's the one who spearheaded the change of direction in RE4 as well. Maybe he doesn't like co-op or something?
Residen Evil CAN be stressful.
When I play this game.
(( STRESSFULL I KNOW! ))
2 the 4th game was almost playble that controled less like tanks for the first time but it also sucked.
3 the 5th game looks just as lame as the 4th game.
So thank god he is not working on it or it would be as lame and sucky as the first game and crontrol worse than lara in tomb raider drunk.
If i had to pick what series of games conrtoled worse than resident evil I think I would go with drunk lara in one of her worst games.
God these games are horrible why do I keep borrowing them oh right because it is free, and making fun of bad horror games is about as fun as doing it with bad horror movies.
I did not give you permission to address me. Back in queue.
But that is just me and not the point I want to make. What really bothers me is why they would ever decide to integrate cooperative play in Resident Evil, a survival horror game. Especially Resident Evil was always about being alone and having to survive against the zombies. That whole feeling of anxiety and being on your own will be just thrown out of the window when you have someone constantly helping you and talking to you over the voice chat. I really want my game to have atmosphere and I belive that the only way someone could ever completely dive into the story of a game is if there is noone to interrupt this illusion of realism.
So in the end yeah I really feel like coop could potentially fuck up the whole idea behind Resident Evil games and to me the inclusion of it just feels like another "me too" move.
I know I did.
Also, he doesn't hafta worry about playing it. I'll gladly do it for him.
EPIC FAIL
