Resi 5 producer denies dirty racism photo

If you've been following videogames for any amount of time, you should be well aware of the "controversy" that has surrounded Resident Evil 5's African setting. The game's producer, Jun Takeuchi has denied that there is anything racist about the game, and believes the original trailer was misunderstood.

It's recently been revealed that a new character, notably a black female, will have a playable role in Resident Evil 5. When asked if her inclusion was due to the uproar over white Chris Redfield blowing away dozens of Africans, Takeuchi stated that she had been there "pretty much since the beginning."

"In terms of the reaction, we're in the business of entertainment," explained the game's producer. "We didn't set out to make a racist game or a political statement. We did feel there was a misunderstanding about the initial trailer."

God, what racists.

2. WHITE MAN KILLING A BUNCH OF BLACK PEOPLE!? OH NO! THIS GAME IS OBVIOUSLY A RACIST WHITE SUPREMACY GAME... made by a bunch of Japanese people.

Actually, I feel the racists are under-represented in gaming. How come we can't have any racists as the main protagonist? Why does it always have to be someone who seems tolerant. I'm sure their are plenty of racists who feel oppressed and discriminated upon by not only games, but entertainment as a whole. C'mon people, racists are people too. Please donate to the United Racists College fund today. Let's end tolerance!!!

/lol, sarcasm

I didn't like the first trailer just because it didn't show anybody in a positive manner other than maybe on roids Chris Redfield (mix the green and red herbs). Now they have a black female lead and I doubt that they just threw her ass in there after people got a little mad.

Also, lol at the people who suggeted their should be a black main character because it's in Africa. Yes, let's make Capcom pull a character not from the main story out of their ass just to appease the racism-sensitive. Not that Capcom is known for sticking with canon, but that's just too far. It's Resident Evil, we have a good list of characters.

It would be funny though if the girl was thrown in due to the complaints. I can see it now "Capcom pays reparations to the easily offended with random black girl!"

How many more years, how many more generations of consoles before there is just as much freedom in terms of setting and story in video games as there is in movies?

No doubt it wasn't deliberate racism, that's rather silly. But I believe you could be rather clueless in the real world's social/political matters.

Seems now they are thinking "Hmm...How do we show people we are not making a racist video game where the some Aryan dude comes to Africa to kill off Black savages...Hmmm...I know, we'll give him a sexy Black...no wait...Mulatta female sidekick!"

Sigh...

Are people ignoring the other games and only looking at this one?

There are White zombies all over Racoon City, Spanish ones in RE4.

How are they being racist for making the majority of zombies black in Africa, of all places!

The fact that people make a big deal about this shit, reminds me that we indeed live in a race conscious society. It's fucking sad.

Well, that's cleared up then. I really hope the developers at some point say they don't intend to make the game bad. That should silence anybody who says otherwise. Won't even need reviews, really.

Not at all racist. Capcom had the black female lead planned. Its not in response to an over reaction by some.

I have to say, out of the majority of devleopers out there, Capcom has the largest cast of black game characters I know of in games. Check their catalogue.

Hurry up, I want to go up against those zombies.

Covah: have you ever seen north africa?

I don't think there is any real racism in this game, just ever present orientalist undertones that I've seen in Far Cry 2 as well. My main gripe is that they don't tell us which country this game is set in! Africa is arguably more diverse than Europe but in RE4 it was clearly stated that the game was set in Spain. But you can't really blame Capcom anymore than anyone else. It's quite common.

"It's too orangey for crows" is a reference to an 80s soft drink advert which was really popular for a long time but was eventually banned because it was considered racist

Personally I think it would be more awesome to have the game take place in Haiti where Voodoo was strong as was the practice of turning people into blind, tongueless "zombies" with their arms outstretched, feeling around and moaning.

The game is racist because blacks are the ones being fictionally killed off. If it were Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Indians or any other ethnic group, there would not be so much as a buzz.
