Last night's announcement of PlayStation 3 gaining Netflix streaming functionality in November was a big one, and even though it seemed inevitable, I still found myself a bit surprised. As someone who has used Instant Watch on his Xbox 360 time and time again, I can't help but feel excited for my PS3-owning friends.
One curious part of the PS3 Netflix deal, however, was the inclusion of a required disc that needs to remain in the console during movie streaming. What's the deal with it? Your guess is as good as mine.
The good news is that G4TV has confirmed with Netflix VP of corporate communications Steve Swasey that these discs will only be for the short term. As soon as the company releases an "embedded solution," similar to how Xbox 360 streaming is set up, the discs can go in the trash can.
It sounds like Netflix wanted to make its wacky assortment of Instant Watch movies available to PS3 owners as quickly as possible, hence the discs. Lastly, while I had just assumed this was the case already, HD streaming was also confirmed.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Well I'm just glad I can get Netflix running throughout the house. I might actually move the 360 downstairs and the Slim I keep saying I'm gonna get (swear to God after Lego Rock Band it's my purchase, SWEAR!) in my room.
People badmouthed streaming and praised Blu-ray? Wouldn't streaming be just as HD, but with no physical media? Makes sense to me.
Blu-Ray will always trump Netflix streaming as far as quality goes, so by "switching sides" you would have to somehow believe that Netflix streaming is better quality. Which is absurd. Which is why your prediction is fail.
You say that like almost all of the SDF's predictions aren't a load of fail.
This is good news for PS3 owners, I guess. Especially when coupled with stuff like iPlayer.
Personally I'd bet that they'd had this solution ready for awhile and had a decent backstock of Blu Rays ready for this very reason while some exclusivity contracts had to run their course.
I bet we'll see wii netflix by next year.
Frankly anyone boasting that it's better because it's free on PSN really didn't pay attention to why xbox Live is worth paying for anyway.
Better matching persistent game support ( unless you're chromehounds), cross game chat support, a more coherently developed online service overall. Sonys spent the better part of 3 years playing catchup with patches and unintegrated half-solutions to make the experience of "free" slightly more bearable.
You said "I bet" three times during your rant. Which translates to, "I have no fucking clue in reality." I guess I have a knack for smelling fanboys miles away.. been doing it for years.
As for PSN.. it works perfectly fine for me. I've never once had any problems doing what it is I wanted to do. You're going to have a real hard time getting me to be persuaded that I should give a shit about that minor detail when the PS3 appears to really be getting its shit together in every single department.
Your Xbox is no less of a console then it was before the Ps3 got Netflix. So, try not to cry yourself to sleep too hard tonight.
Um... Yeah. You've never met me before have you?
I... also own all three major consoles, have owned an Xbox, PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Saturn, SNES, NES, N64, and pretty much every major console that's been out on the market.
I also don't play favorites and I'm also not a fanboy. And I'm also a GINORMOUS ASSHOLE TO PEOPLE I'VE NEVER MET IN REAL LIFE. Just like you. :D
The "bet" part is partly because neither you, me, or anyone else in here knows for sure. And it's also partly because I post mostly from my phone, so I tend to repeat things sometimes to cut down on how much time I spend typing on the damn tiny ass keyboard.
So, if you've got time to spare tonight in your vast expanse of consoles you own to be abrasive for no better reason than to spur people's social advances towards you and just being miserable all by yourself... Maybe you can answer a question.
What makes you think I'm a fanboy?
Was it stating a list of valid reasons that it's worth continuing to pay for Xbox Live? Was it pointing out that Netflix isn't running on the PS3 because the browser lacks support for a special plugin that Microsoft made to sell for specialty video applications on the web? Maybe it was because there's fucking EVIDENCE that a video delivery service similar to Netflix on the Wii is at least being developed?
Cause I took a bit of time to speak to each of those points. All three consoles deserve Netflix. It's a fantastic feature and it's retarded that it was mired in a exclusivity contract to keep it away from other console owners. I'd stick the Instant Watch service on my cock if it meant I'd be able to watch streaming Netflix when I'm in my refractory period.
I'm sure it's none of those, though. Maybe it was my name. Sorry I couldn't cater to everyone, but BluHDDVDStreamingVODDesign.264 just felt weird as a user name.
I'm sure its your sense of self-entitlement to be REALLY abrasive since you're new here in hopes of connecting with someone in some small hope that we'll all refer to you as the "#1 asshole on Destructoid".
Well guess what buddy? There's several thousand other assholes all vying for that same title and you're about 3 years late to this party. Get in line with the rest of us. Robert Summa left the site without naming a proper successor.
Talked to a friend who would use another person's account sometimes and said it was really hard to find movies worth watching most the time, and I can totally see his point.
Not to shit on anyone's parade, but I don't have much time for movies, so when I see something like this, I expect there to be day-1 releases, or at least comparable to the PSN's video store.
I can see why Sony has no need to worry about netflix imposing on PSN's video store's sales.
I use it as part of a mix of stuff to watch. My instant queue is full of old crappy movies that'll never see the light of day on Blu Ray and I don't really want to own. Some are crap movies, some are old classics, others are stuff I haven't seen in forever and would want to see again before i decide if I'd want to own it again.
It has it's good points. Having the majority of South Park up there constantly is nice too when I don't feel like sitting at my computer all day on the SPStudios website. Same with Doctor Who, old Star Trek, Lost reruns, Quantum Leap, most Discover Channel documentaries. Penn and Teller's Bullshit? That's worth it right there.
But, with a mix of this, getting a steady flow of MST3K DVD's and cartoons through the mail with snailmail Netflix, and all the streaming media stuff I've got shared between my 360 and my PS3, life's good when you've got options of how to survive without paying for cable. If only they'd natively re-enable Hulu on the PS3 then I'd be a lot happier.
Sorry, im a super happy camper with the PSN in all corners.
Great, more disposable shit to fill up the landfill. I'll be waiting for that firmware update just out of principal.
The 360 is using Silverlight to run those fantastic moving ads on the NXE.
@MrLefty
It'd be pretty easy to bypass that too. USPS post office boxes, paypal credit cards... All pretty easy to bypass. I'd wagerthey're going to be able to do IP filtering since it's running through a browser in BD-Live
Until that day comes (and odds are it never will), I can't and won't give a shit about this Netflix stuff.
That's a good defense. You should represent Nazi war criminals. "Your honor, even if my client had decided not to murder the Jews, they would have eventually died off anyway."
I try not to contribute to wastefulness out of principal. Just because it will happen regardless of my actions doesn't mean I need to condone or encourage it.
Oh, and I was only kidding. I'm already a Netflix customer. Of course I'm going to order the disc.
