Want to know how to truly screw every gamer and customer? Well, then take a page from the Sony book, because they have a ton of secrets to share with you. The latest debacle to be added onto the ever growing sh*t pile that is the PlayStation 3 has to do with the fact that if you own an HDTV that only goes up to 1080i, well, then you're sh*t out of luck with games that only go up to 720p. Can you believe this?
The latest (rather major) tidbit is how the console treats the upscaling and downscaling of 720p titles on televisions that don't support that resolution -- specifically those that are only 1080i capable.
As it turns out, gamers who own older HD sets that feature only 480i, 480p, and 1080i resolution input capabilities will have to settle for the display quality being downsized as the game boots in its 480p mode rather than upscaling the image from its more desirable 720p mode to the TV's 1080i. We tested this development on older HDTV sets with games designed for 720p but not 1080i -- Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon. Sure enough, the system downshifted all four titles to 480p rather than moving up to 1080i.
The PlayStation 3's competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360, does upscale 720p games to 1080i if the HD set supports the latter resolution but not the in-between and commonly-employed 720p resolution.
Think $600 is expensive? Wait until you drop a couple grand to get a 1080p HD set to make that PS3 actually worthy. Welcome to next gen.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Being addicted to video games really sucks sometimes.
the fact of the matter is that sony should have supported the upscale unstead of screwing gamers out of an hd experience... especially since no one has boasted more than sony about "true hd" and next gen prowess. this is just bad business, plain and simple.
yeah, lets go to play NES games on a crappy TV.
(by the way, what are you doing here, on a nex-gen videogames site?)
Oh, and there's two G's in Yggdrasil.
If the game is 1080p only and has no support for 720p but has it for 480p... guess what.
Your 720p HDTV will be running at 480p.
I was thinking the same thing! I don't read Dtoid because of "nex-gen" articles that have been frequently posted. Igdrasil obviously didn't read the basic def. of what Dtoid is: A Hardcore Gaming Community! Not about one console, new or old.
Your statement that "this only occurs when a set doesn't support 720p but does support a 1080i image, which is still incredibly rare." is true of newer HD tvs. But it is very common in early model HD tvs. Sony's been making HD sets for quite a while and should have been aware of this issue. This probably won't be a big issue if Sony doesn't ignore it. I would think this would be pretty easy to fix, we'll just have to wait and see.
I was planning on getting one next year, but now there is no way. I bought my HDTV in 2003 & it does not support 720p native. I waited for years before my purchase. I read all kinds of articles & at the time 720p really wasn't a concern because it was considered a temporary step to 'true hd'. There are millions of people in the same boat as me, and it's a real deal breaker for the PS3. Hopefully it can be fixed.
