Report claims PS Vita devs are jumping ship to 3DS photo

A Japanese news report has decided to kick a system while it's down, claiming that a number of PlayStation Vita developers have canceled their projects to go and make 3DS games. Meanwhile, Sony has responded by claiming third parties are still behind it all the way.

"Major Japanese companies are cancelling all projects intended for Vita and are changing development to 3DS," a source reportedly told Nikkei.

Sony's Scott Rohde dismissed the claim as an "extremist quote" and assured Gamasutra that claims of abandonment are largely exaggerated.

"I know many, many, many third party developers are feverishly working on Vita titles, not just for now, but for the foreseeable future. There's always going to be the hot platform of the moment in our industry. There's always going to be reason to talk about a story like that."

Some have suggested that Rohde's choice of wording implies that at least some Vita developers have scrapped projects. I certainly hope it's not true, as the PS Vita needs to follow through on its solid launch lineup. I really don't want the Vita to be in a "six months between must-have titles" situation. We had enough of that with the PSP.

Sony insists devs still keen on Vita [Edge]

I find it unlikely that there will be any mass exodus from the Vita. Not with the handheld offering the capability to put more ambitious games on it.

I just got home from Gamestop after getting Tales of the Abyss 3DS and saw this and just laughed out loud! No offense to Vita owners; I'm a proud PS3 owner and will probably get the Vita when the price is right and internal storage is added, but this is so interesting. Considering it was only a few short months ago when so many were decrying the 3DS every other day, it's good to see the Vita isn't missing out on the haterade.

My biggest fear in regards to the Vita is that it becomes too much like consoles, with safe bets ruling the day wholesale. If publishers get skittish about taking chances on the Vita, and it starts to offer the exact same experience as consoles, that would fucking suck.

Say what you will about third party PSP support, but there is little doubt that it was a great system for the kinds of games that you just can't find on consoles anymore. Not as good as the DS in that regard, but still far more than capable. I'd hate for the Vita to become yet another haven for the tried and true because sales just aren't as strong as they could be.

I'd rather have a niche must-have every six months, with mediocre-yet-charming games peppering the spaces in between, than have a must-have CoD clone every two months.

There were similar stories about 3DS projects being abandoned shortly after launch and we do know of a couple public ones. I'm really just saying that before the SDF comes in and uses that and also claims a Monster Hunter game will fix everything.

I think the problem here is a system with an unattractive price point and even more unattractive price point of the memory cards. People don't care about the anti-piracy or data speed excuses the SDF makes up, people care about value in the price for themselves as consumers, not what benefits Sony or data transfer speeds.

Value trumps everything and while we can argue that its in the "eye of the beholder" it seems most eyes want the most they can get for their dollar, not the least they can get.

I highly doubt this is true. Plus even if it is, Sony has the largest first party talent in the industry so it really doesn't matter.

Well the Nikkei has been pretty reliable, and accurate with their video game story's up until now. So I don't know why you'd think that this was would be any less credible, other than the fact that, you just might not like what its saying!

I could care less about the Vita, personally, I just think anonymous sources are not very credible ones. And most articles I've read agree that this sounds like pure speculation and rumor, not credible information.

But maybe you have some credible evidence to the contrary, hmmm?

Really hope this doesn't turn out to be true, I'd rather we have great titles on both platforms and it'll really suck if either one fall behind due to sales.

Even though Monster Hunter does little over here I hope it kicks up the sales for the Vita considerably.

I'm sure they're not abandoning the Vita altogether. It is however, much more likely that the Vita will see many more 3DS ports than initially expected.

The way he worded it definitely means that some Japanese devs jumped ship. The good news is that they are just Japanese developers, so I honestly couldn't give two shits about whatever terrible, obtuse, pretentious, stuck-in-the-past shit fest they were developing for the Vita anyway.

I think we WILL see many games going to both systems, being that the 3DS finally has the second nub and the Vita has a touch screen.

There are definitely titles from 3DS that I would like to see on the Vita, and viceversa

You guys do realize that the majority of the time business news like this is broken, it is done so under the condition of anonymity, yeah? Would you call up Nikkei and tell them things that could put your job in jeopardy, and allow them to run your name in the story?

Do you think Nikkei would run a completely uncorroborated story that could affect share price for a company they, themselves, list as part of the Nikkei Index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange, based on a random phone call that could have been made by anyone?

Anonymous to us, not to them. You have to reasonably prove you're in a position to know such things before Nikkei itself decides to send tremors down your shareholder's backs. Shit like this should never be taken as gospel, but to disregard it completely based on one of the very base journalistic cornerstones in the condition of anonymity (protected by law in the US, mostly) is just taking it way too far in the opposite direction.

These projects must be really early on in development. There's no way you cancel something outright if you've made any sort of progress unless your producer is a complete boob.

Honestly, I don't believe these reports too much really. For all we know its not jumping ship as much as it is simply deciding to cross platform or something.

I mean, look at RE: Revelation. Capcom (love them or hate them in their current state of business) just showed us a $60 game could be made for a $40 cart. Its hard to believe, what with the growth of the 3DS' sales numbers, that more companies wouldn't want to jump on that -but what better way to do that then by using games already in development? It'll surely cost them less then having to make all new games, just to figure out how to port them over.

So, its probably not doom as much as it is simply companies trying to take advantage of the 3DS' surge in sales. When the Vita picks up (and I'm pretty positive it will) everything will even out.

"I should be a developer. It must feel great being able to say whatever you want and have people agree with you."

........wat? It's like wrong artic.....eh....I don't even know.

OT: Tbh I can kind of "see it", why make a game for a system that isn't doing all that well compared to one that has a 16 million install base in a year, of course the vita hasn't even come out yet in the states but it doesn't stop the fact that the 3DS has the install base already.

You get two publishers in this type of situation, those who want to be the cause for hardware sales and launch a system into relevance, and those who rather wait it out and see if it's safe before finalizing, and I find it rather plausible for the latter to jump ship.

OK, seriously, people need to cool their jets. Systems are entitled to slow starts while people figure out the hardware and development costs. Vita hasn't even had a full launch yet in the rest of the world (don't know if Europe got a First Edition bundle), those will definitely brighten some prospects. I'm still excited for Vita and what it can do. It's gonna be a good system.

I dont have either system, and I cant understand why anyone would jump ship from Vita > 3DS. The Vita just looks like a superior system in every way, like seriously.
