Renegade Kid shows off its muddy 3D DS platformer photo

Renegade Kid (the developer behind the technically impressive Dementium and Moon for Nintendo DS) has revealed its new project, a third-person platformer, to IGN.

Called Maximillian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds, the title has a young Maximillion cleaning up his neighborhood of mud creatures, spawned as a result of a fallen meteor. Max has a watergun/backpack combination to take out the Mutant Mudds, which of course immediately brings to mind Super Mario Sunshine. But hey, there could be worse comparisons, right?

The title is early on in development, with no publisher and no firm details on how the game will be delivered to the DS. It could be a DSiWare game, it could be a retail game… it could be both? Most interesting is Renegade Kid’s suggestion that it could deliver the game to retail, and then supplement the title with DSiWare downloads in the future, a possible first for the platform.

IGN has trailer of the game in action, which looks fluid (no pun intended) running at 60 frame per second. What do you think?

I would be more interested in this if it were 2D. If I'm platforming, 2D feels more accurate.

That was very impressive.

Sooo, it's Super Mario Sunshine?

Movement IS much smoother than I had anticipated, but I can't bring myself to be excited for 3D games on the DS. Aside from DQ9, they uniformly look like crap.

Yes, I know, it's impressive to get these graphics out of the DS, but just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

My eyes hurt just thinking about it...

So they take the horrible Super Mario Sunshine and make it smaller. Unless some unbelievely gameplay mechanic snaps in that makes the game one the best darned games I've ever played no thanks.

I am impressed!
But not one bit interested.
I for one have no problems with the DS 3d graphics. But I also done "see" graphics.

I actually liked Super Mario Sunshine, I don't understand why so many people

hate it.

Most 3D games on the DS look muddy and jagged, unless it's something like Phantom Hourglass. I tend to avoid 3D on the DS. This really doesn't look that great.

As for Super Mario Sunshine, it wasn't a horrible game, but considering its pedigree, it got the pacing all wrong. Its difficulty was just dumped into a blender and randomized. It had great levels and ideas punctuated regularly with both frustration and boredom.

Personally, I don't like the art style, that's just me.

3d games usually suck on the DS, the controls just don't work very well for it even when the graphics are passable- you really need some sort of analog to do 3d gaming

I like Super Mario Sunshine the best out of the three 3D Mario platformers. It's Mario with a shooting element, set in some of the most beautiful 3D platforming levels ever made and an engine that looked better on the Gamecube than most games look on the Wii (I think it even looks better than Galaxy. Awesome draw distances and heat distortion.) The difficulty is uneven (I still haven't completed it 100% after starting over 3 times.... damn acid pool and pachinko machine), but I think some of the people who crap all over it would have loved it to death if Mario were carrying a flamethrower and not water.

This doesn't look remotely as well-done -- the best we could hope for would have been Mario Sunshine as rendered on the N64, and these guys may be really technically savvy but they're not exactly Nintendo in the design department -- and I don't know how well it'll control without analog sticks, but the watergun play mechanics sound pretty good to me and it certainly is smooth.

Impressive, now I have to pray for good controls.

I mean, I don't like games where you have to constantly switch between stylus and ABXY. If they manage to get platforming controls similar to Ninja Gaiden DS, or at least tap/hold to walk and up to jump, then I'll be sold.
