Reminder: Xbox 360 system update now available photo

I just glanced over at my Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel 2009 calendar and noticed that it's August 11. That means the Xbox 360 System Update revealed at E3 should be available, and according to Major Nelson, it is.

The update brings a few new cool features which we've already discussed, including the ability to purchase items for your Avatar, along with updated Netflix capabilities. What you won't find in the update is the Xbox LIVE Twitter, Facebook, and Last.FM integration, or the Zune Video Marketplace, all of which is said to launch later this year.

So go ahead, turn on your Xbox 360, and set about five minutes aside to download and update your console. If you don't have the update just yet, be patient -- the update is rolling out to all Xbox LIVE members over the next few hours. When you get it, let us know what you think.

So it has recently come to my attention that all the cute little armor perms for your avatar are for guys only.

Man, I'm not really into dressing my avatar yet, at least until there is enough content to be very original, but there are some very tempting pieces that they have in the avatar marketplace.

Oh and avatar props look awesome. The avatars actually interact with each prop. It's very cool.

I don't see that part where it shows how long you've been a member of Live though.

All in all much much slicker. I really like how they revamped the games marketplace and have all the top rated content...as for rating games/movies/demos it's super easy. You click on "rate" and then you then you click A for as many stars as you want to give it.

Nothing groundbreaking, that stuff is coming later in the year, but a solid update.

48 minutes remaining I think the servers are a little busy.

@Vimto:

Yikes. A few weeks back for the preview, it took about 9 minutes. Subsequent updates were around 5. Almost 50 minutes is insane.

I'll leave it running, do we know if the 360 classic games will be available either today or within the week?

Haven't seen it yet but then again I have been signed onto Live for awhile so maybe I have to restart. Totally forgot that the update is today.

How big is the update, anyway?! Is it slow because the servers are busy?

My sped up in the end took about 15 minutes, and is a bit rubbish, and slightly disappointing, plus £19.99 for old xbox games, oh dear Microsoft.

@Vimto: £19.99?! Well, guess i will be buying the £10 disc version of Mass Effect instead of getting it downloadable.

I'd rather have it on disc anyway.

if for some reason you dont have it yet, 1st ...connect to the internet, if that doesnt work, try a network connection test to xbox live. it basically forces them to give you your not so amazing update.

I had to try and play a game online to get the update to start, only took a minute. Impressions in a bit :P

One of the early announcements for this update mentioned increased UI speed, which is literally the only thing that interests me, not bullet lists for marketing wanks.

However, any mention of faster menu navigation seems to have faded away as NXE update coverage wears on. But spending real money for fake items for my paid subscription's fake person is fine too.

All this just so I can pay for virtual clothing for my avatar? No thank you.

I was all excited to update, then I quickly found out my guide menus were still laggy, Games on demand were on sale for more money than finding it retail, and MS had copy-pastaed HOME's clothes marketplace into Live.

Uh.......::electro lemon eye roll gif::

I like the smaller updates to the mini dashboard and what not, not so much the other stuff. A REAL RC Warthog would be pretty cool.

I had extra points from buying some arcade games, so I snagged a few of the steampunk items. I think I only spent like, 350 points on about 4 items. If I get an extra 400 I may get the lightsaber.

But, I will never go out and buy a 1600 point card JUST to get clothes. If I have a stale 80 points and nothing else is good in the MP, why not spend it on the clothes?

F*ck it. M$, I'll pay you for and option to remove the avatar from my console. Just put an option in the marketplace, something like: ''Remove your Avatar today! Easy and fast, now only €19,99'' You'll make millions. You know it makes sense.

Why are you guys bitching? Its a free update. You don't need to buy clothes for your avatar, you really don't! It's not like they are making you do it in order to continue playing games. Some people like accessorizing... its the same thing as buy premium themes. Plus, you sort of need the avatar to play certain games, like 1 vs 100 or that racing game that is supposed to come out.

Get a grip people, everything ANY gaming company does is not always going to be catered directly to you.

Wah wah wah "PS3 updates take so long" - compared to 50 minutes? WTF?

wah wah wah - Facebook & Twitter support will be groundbreaking! - No they're not, anyone with a PS3 takes their browser for granted, I mean come on, this is the 21st century, console + Browser is no brainer.

Avatars suck, give me an OPTIONAL avatar and a world for it to play in, even if that world is missing some REAL groundbreaking features.

Where the hell do you find those calendars? Are they 2009? Share the source or admit what you have is a calendar of a shirtless David Boreanaz.

I just spent around 40 minutes downloading (my bandwidth is terrible) and I can proudly say that I'm completely indifferent about this update. I'm never going to buy one of their games on demand, for not only are they cheaper in the shops (my copy of Mass Effect in the nice special edition tin cost me less than half of what the game is on here) but it would be much quicker to head down the store and pick up the game, than use the download speed I currently have to battle with.

The avatar clothes are admittedly quite nice, but they cost money so that's a no go. Maybe the next update will be more interesting..

Give me one where I can use a debit card instead of spending MS points and I'll be all over the XBLA!

Besides the new Netflix stuff, I'm really disapointed. It's all worthless if NXE is still slow, and it is....when will viewing my games library NOT take 10+ seconds to load?

I just got it.. only took like 3 mins to download and install.. it's ok, nothing amazing.. games on demand is cool, but $100AU for Mass Effect is Ridiculous.. especially when you can get it retail for like $40AU.. I wanna know what games can earn Avatar awards.. anyone know if there's a way to check? like in the achievements browser or something?

I have 1 Mbit download, thats 100 kb/s. How long will it take? I got prompted, but refused the update for now. For some reason, the electricity went out for about 2 minutes twice today in my house, so I wont risk a power outage in the middle of the download. What would happen if the download was interrupted?

Sexualchocolate, why don't you just stay in the PS3 threads? There is no point for you to be here as you don't own an Xbox and only come in to troll. Seriously, is Sony paying you to be a retarded, obnoxious fanboy?
I liked how the update put the Welcome tab thing back up, so I had to turn it off again. Not really much here I'm too excited about since I don't use netflix...but still the little things I've noticed have been ok. I'm hoping the Facebook update comes soon.

SexualChocolate loves Home.

The update takes around a minute for decent internets. The most important inclusion is that you can now press X to eject disks from the tray!

The ratings things is going to fail hard, people are going to vote either 1 star or 5 depending on their fanboy loyalties, just like Metacritic.

@Caeolos yeah, some of the avatar stuff isn't too badly priced but a lot of it, like that is ridiculous...

especially the branded stuff, like adidas and Quicksilver.. they should be paid for by advertising.

C'mon, I just have one request of the avatar system.

Either made them kids, or make them look and move a little more like adults. The lack of maturity and sexuality in a grown-up looking body is really disturbing to me.

I'd pay for an option to disable the avatars before I'd ever spend even one pretend microsoft penny to purchase avatar clothes. I don't care about the facebook or internet radio, but smaller game installs sounds good to me.

Well my update only took about a minute. It was a wasted minute of my life. This update in complete junk. All they really did was add more things for us to spend money on and over charge us. Do we really need little crappy avatar items we have to pay for? 400 points for a light saber and 80 points for a stupid looking eye patch? And I can't find the spot where they tell us how to unlock the game rewards that are free. And 30 bucks for COD2 and Assassin's Creed? I can get both games used for under 30 bucks together.

The update is rather under-whelming. For people in the States it might be good for the new NetFlix stuff, but we don't get that here in Canada, so I couldn't care less about it, Everything else is just minor changes, which is fine, because it was badly needed. But Microsoft shouldn't act like its some big deal, when its clearly not. The "ratings" thing is a complete joke. I mean come on, you don't even need to own the game to rate it, so the whole system is pointless.

If Microsoft is just going to constantly take from Nintendo's lead, than they should at least try to do it better. You should have to own the game, and have played it for a certain amount of time like on the Wii. This update is just for nickle & diming the customers, nothing more. So the fall update better be better than this one was, but I don't see how it couldn't be any better than this one!

My update was quick to download but I'm still dissapointed in it. Like others have mentioned, loading friends lists and game libraries still takes waaaay too long. Seeing as that was the only part of this update I'm interested in, all I can say is that I am dissapoint. =(

The update downloaded in 15 minutes, the onlay difference that I noticed (and marginally cared about) was some options in the Settings tab were added/reordered, so now I got resolution, aspect ratio(normal or widescreen) and VGA for VGA cable and thats it.

I've noticed the game library section seems to be a lot faster. It used to take me like a minute of waiting between the main dashboard and being able to play a demo I've downloaded. It only took about five minutes for me with my speedy connection. I did realize that I should probably clear up some space on my hard drive: I had only five gigs left of my 120 GB HDD. Now it's back up to twenty because I realized that I still had games installed to the hard drive that I had borrowed and returned months ago.

I had some points left from a few Oblivion, Halo 3, and Bad Company dl's to get a few things. Needles to say, I want the Bioshock shirts in realife. But one thing getting at me is the d--m booping noise in my ear upon joining/creating/leaving a party. Anyway to fix that?
