Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

I used to rock the turbo buttons on my NES Max controller, even if I didn't need to. I felt like a badass, thinking that while everyone else was using plain-jane ol' standard NES controllers, I was getting my turbo on and jumping half as high with my NES Max.

Now that I'm older and less stupid, I can fully appreciate the charms of a turbo button. In this world of shooters, quicker shots mean a strong advantage. And fighting games? Blasting off kicks and punches so quick that no one can see them would be nice. Cheating, but nice.

Nexilux has decided to bring this ancient technology back from the dead by adding customizable turbo buttons to a standard Xbox 360 controller. You'll hit a configuration button the controller, and then tap the turbo trigger to set the frequency and number of button presses you'd like it to execute. It's that simple. Check out the video example, which warns you to set your turbo to a speed that would not get you banned.

Total Console has these Game Genie Turbo 360 wireless controllers on sale for $59.99. If you get one, don't tell me about it. If you use it against me online, f*ck you.

I remember turbo buttons. What did they do? I never knew.

Something similar happened with the pc which i first heard of during CoD4.
Fire was bound to the mouse scroll so that u could fire extremely fast just like the pistol in the video.
It was considered a hack and some servers would auto ban you for this.
Whats the point in playing if you cant play fair?

Turbo buttons were alright when all you could play was single-player and local multiplayer (so your friends could easily see if you were using it). They provide too much of an unfair advantage against other players, and weaken the game balance that developers try to put into online multiplayer games. Sure, the player using the turbo controller might have more of a fun time dominating other players with their purchased abilities, but it comes at the cost of decreasing the enjoyment of other players.

Games should probably have a limit on rate of fire other than how fast the button can be pressed anyway.

Like Halo 3 has.

Pretty sure MW2 has detection for this built in, and the Oistol firing rate got reduced to prevent stuff like this from working.

To be clear, pimping a console does not involve prostitutes?

Also, that turbo is slow, i can rapid fire a handgun on cod way faster than that.

I have this sweet button on my mouse that triple clicks the left-mouse button. I'll admit it can be incredibly cheap at times but nothings more satisfying then knowing you have the upper hand.

Fuck this tech. It's pretty easy to tell who is rocking the turbo controllers these days, and these have been around for a while, but is it that slow of a news day that DToid needs to write about it? And providing a download link to the site that sells them is downright promoting this shit. I mean, an article telling us they exist is fine, but one that calls it "Cheating, but nice," and then provides a link is something this site shouldn't be promoting. Jesus guys, come on.

I considered that mouse when I was looking for one, does it work in TF2?

Mouse Scrolling pistol is one of the oldest tricks in the book. I found out about it from a friend back when mouse scrolling was considered "new".

Also, an issue of OXM from last year had a story about turbo buttons on XBox 360 controlers. They said it was hard to detect between fast clickers and cheaters. I know people who use two fingers to fire so they can have the "turbo" effect. They also kick my ass on Pistols Only rules.

The recent COD4 patch on the 360 outlawed modded controllers. Expect the same for MW2.

Some games have built-in detection for these. Metal Gear Solid had it for the torture scene.

Yeah I did think banning modded controllers would be more worthwhile, but that might be hard or impossible to detect without actually inspecting the controller.

I'll use my turbo pad on CoD4 when I'm playing with friends. Dumping a whole Dragunov magazine in half a second is pretty hilarious.

Oh turbo controllers, how I remember having two of them for Sega Genesis and how both of them stopped working after awhile.

Shouldn't the games that have "fire as fast as you click" weapons have an upper limit so they won't get overpowered so easily? It seems like it would be a lot easier to use a program on the PC to enable rapid fire than using a modded controller on the 360, especially with Microsoft locking down 3rd party hardware these days.

1. The NES Max was the best controller ever and
2. Yes, the torture game in Metal Gear Solid was the best example of the end of turbo.

Seriously though, you shouldn't be using turbo at all. You should have master thumbs/fingers.

i was such a huge NES MAX fan, only controller i would use, wasnt even for the turbo, i loved the black circular dpad. or Opad if you will.
but all my friends hated it. none of them understood that you didnt have to use the red circle thing. you could use the outside black circle as well.

I only had a good experiences with turbo on a select few Amiga games, apart from that turbo was either too fast or too slow for a given game, giving uneven rapid fire. Really could have used it on track 'n' field.

Because of those little ass born fuck heads with no skills, using this shitty method to win every fire fight, im not playing online multiplayer games anymore.
Everyone who use this should get instandly a rrod or a ylod! I mean, whats the point in playing games if your a absolut duche at it? If you suck at multiplay, live with it, get better or let it be BUT DONT CHEAT SUCH A CHEAP WAY!!!

@pain: Man, I just love people who don't know how to spell asshole and fuck properly.

You know, why aren't companies coding in hard limits for fire rates in games? There was that one trick in TF2 to fire all of the pistol's shots in a single go, and so on. I understand that some people can press a button fifteen times in a single second, and kudos to those who can, but I'll go ahead and cry BALANCE!! here for argument's sake.

Seriously. Some games even recognize when so-and-so button's being pressed so rapidly, but that doesn't mean it needs to actually register each and every press. Why, even some games just don't register at all when the speed's too high. Etc etc.

Stephen Tolouse had said that this (opening and modifying xbox 360 controllers) is something that can get you banned on xbox for cheating. This is both something I am grateful as well as saddened by. I want to make a (cheaper) pair of twin sticks for virutal on but if doing such a thing is a bannable offense, I better just get used to playing with an unmodified controller. Turbo buttons are a bad thing though. Don't do it kids. Play fair.

Here's hoping FPS and TPS dev's find a way to render these unusable. Last thing I need is a bunch of losers using turbo controllers on their rifles because they can't play worth a damn. It happened to World at War, along with a lot of glitches in general. TBH, if you need a turbo controller for anything that isn't button mashing (ie Metal Gear Solid endings), you just suck at whatever you're playing.

I know its your duty as a game journalist to tell the masses about gaming news, but I'd prefer this kind of news stay hidden so as not to unbalance games. Also, telling everyone where to buy it AND adding a price listing? Sounds more like product placement than legitimate journalism.
