Remedy explains why Alan Wake isn't coming to PC photo

Microsoft pissed off the already easy-to-piss-off PC gamer crowd when it revealed that Alan Wake wasn't coming to computers anymore. The publisher's reasoning -- that the game is suited to a big TV and not an "intimate" PC environment -- was rubbish, and we know it. Developer Remedy has issued its own explanation, one that insults our intelligence slightly less.

"Saying that Alan Wake is best played of a sofa with 5.1 surround and a big TV screen, I think is more of a preference than anything else," states franchise head Oskari Häkkinen. "We’re not going out there to say that PC gamers can’t enjoy it from their own PC set-up. We’re certainly not saying that. We have a strong heritage in PC gaming as well.

"But, frankly, we’re a small studio. We’re 50 people, and being a small studio, it makes a lot more sense for us to focus on one platform. Currently we’re fully focused on the Xbox version, and [as for] what the future holds, we haven’t got anything to announce, and we haven’t thought that far right now. We’re fully crunching towards the Xbox 360 version."

That's a more honest excuse than the PR nonsense Microsoft pulled out of its arse. It likely won't satisfy the angry PC gamers, not least because Alan Wake was originally developed for PC, but it's better than being lied to.

See, I can respect that. There is probably more earning potential in the 360. If they need to focus on one platform that decision makes sense.

"There is probably more earning potential"

I would say there's no 'probably' about it. If the game is deserving it would likely sell better on the 360 than any other platform.

But does it make sense? As far as I can see, Alan Wake has always been a PC game at some form of development and it's only recently they've dropped the PC version.

Why drop it now and why not before when it could have saved them a lot more money and manhours?

Though i really wished this would come out for the pc, I respect their desision to keep it off pc. Most games that are developed feel right when on a console but not so good on the pc

The most frustrating part of "Consoles allow you to play on the couch on the bigscreen" is how incorrect it is.

Who can't hook up a computer to a 1080p tv and play on it? I do it all the time...play with my xbox controller or even mouse and keyboard on my tray.

There are games that are exclusive to one console. That's just it. It's not like PC versions of any of those PS3-exclusives are likely, right? I can understand Microsoft needs some real exclusive for their console again. They've lost serious amount of ground to Sony there.

I still say there's too much drama over a game people want one day, hate the next day, want the next day, and so on.

At least they're responsive. I still find it odd but if it's what they gotta do it's what they gotta do. I just want it to come out already.

@coldalarm: It was announced for PC but we don't know what they actually accomplished on the PC version. The PC version could have been dead in the water long before they announced it's cancellation.

Meh...Some of these exclusives are not really set in stone as time goes by. Remember how RE4 was a GC exclusive game or Bioshock for the xbox and pc.

If you can afford the man power. Maybe the threat of piracy on PC? I dunno.

I see some people saying they'd make more on a 360 only version. I dunno the logic behind that but I won't dispute it either.

@ Xzyliac : They stand to make more on the 360 only than the PC only. So if they decided to focus on one platform out of the 2 the 360 is the more logical choice.

Naturally a PC and a 360 version together could make more money overall.

Last time I checked programming for 360 and PC is identical. Just need to reorganize which cpus handle what tasks. So don't give me that 'one platform' bullshit. Frankly, I believe it comes down to your quality of work. It looks like shit, but it will pass on a 360. Your ugly rendering and textures would stand out like a sore thumb on newer PCs.

If they were dropping out of PS3 is less stupid since they have very different coding, though the PC is almost the same as the 360, so they are just lazy

its a bit disappointing I heard about the PC version just a very short time ago so it kinda sucked to know that happened, but oh well.

Hmm, sounds like we might be right that it will come to the PC eventually from comments like, "Right now we are fully focused on the 360 version. As for what the future holds, we haven't got anything to announce." Riiiight. Not now but eventually--once the 360 version has had its chance to play at being "exclusive."

If MicroShit said what Remedy said in the first place, I don't think the outcry would've been as big, besides as with all "exclusives" it'll probably eventually get a PC port.

Small studio == we can't afford (or don't want to pay for) PC development and support.

When developers start saying this out loud, PC gaming is doomed.

Also, just for the record, certain people saying stuff like "MicroShit" doesn't make certain people sound very good.

as an angry PC elitist, this does seem to be a reason, not an excuse. I do not see why, since Microsoft wants to hype it so much, they couldnt have another company port it or something...

As and angry pc gamer myself, i can accept that answer. I would prefer it much more if dev teams would just be like "look, we dont have the resources to to this right now" instead of mircrosoft giving us that bs answer.

One of my PCs is hooked up to a 40 inch LED TV with 7.1 surround sound and some games like racing and action adventure, I use a microsoft gaming pad. So the gaming environment answer was total bullcrap. This answer is much better and acceptable. But I do hope they at least think about developing this for PC later on.

Pretty sure it has more to do with Microsoft must have been financing them to get this thing finished after a million delays (and been allowed to redesign the game to sell on 360), but I don't suppose you can really say that out loud. Hopefully they got to keep some of their original ideas, but I doubt it =/.
