Remedy doesn't know how Alan Wake will end photo

Alan Wake doesn't have an ending yet. In fact, Remedy doesn't even know how the game will end. Apparently, this is still to be decided, and the developer expects the story to change between now and May.

"We really feel there needs to be a satisfying conclusion," says writer Sam Lake. "But at the same time, it needs to end in kind of a cliffhanger and we need to open doors for a larger story beyond this one.

"How Alan Wake as a whole will end? We have ideas and have mapped out the storyline quite far, but time will tell. I'm sure it will live a life of its own and things will change along the way. We certainly would like to do more, but ultimately if people want more, they will get more."

So let me get this straight ... Alan Wake has been in development for at least five years and they don't have any idea how it will even end? I wonder what these guys have been doing for the past half a decade.

DLC, bitches! It's like Alone in the Dark or Heavy Rain. Everything is in episodes.

That sort of long development time without a strict idea of what they're trying to accomplish does not bode well.

It speaks of a lack of direction early on; less focus than a very refined experience would require.

Similar to how FFXIII's large amount of unused assets by the way of levels and art and monsters says something similar about that game. I'm worried Alan Wake will end up having a very shaky narrative because of this.

1. Bought out by Microsoft.
2. PC version canned.
3. Ending changed to make it sequel compatible.
4. ?
5. Profit.

ahem, the game was planned as an "episode" from a bigger story from the very beginning, so why does it come as a surprise?

Oh wait so... this will be the first game of a series?

The ending reveals that the whole video game has been a tv show that Max Payne was watching!

How about they finish the first game before they start thinking of the sequel? Although they could have made two games in the time it's taken them to not even figure out the ending to one game.

What ever happened to the game being "done", and being polished?

Klardeb wins!

Alan Wake, if you can pull up your lanuch console/Windows Vista hype era memory logs, was supposed to be the first of a series. The plan was always each day within Alan Wale would essentially be an "episode" (not that the game would be episodic but that the layout of progression would be like episodes of tv). I think they referenced 24 multiple times. And then each new game would be like a new season. Alan Wake was always not only a series but was also taunted as having a big cliffhanger ending much like when the season of a major show ends.

The longivity of this games development plus the lack of info on it over the last couple years has really fucked with people's grasp of what they're trying to accomplish.

Yeah, as i remember, when the game was supposed to be released as a Vista or higher exclusive on PC, that they were talking about how the game will not be playable on single-core cpus, or non-dx10 gpus. and the game progression was supposed to be as Xzyliac said - a game as a kind of "season" in the series, divided into "episodes". When Sam Lake was giving the first details he mentrioned that they were aiming at at least a trilogy of games.
But i won't be surprised if they did decide to change some plans and story because of a long development.
And i won't be actually surprised if the next "season" of the series will come out soon after the first one. Remedy developed the first Max Payne, which i still consider the best tps to date, for almost 5 years and then released a sequel in one and a half.

So it was a PC exclusive, that later they thought it would be a good idea to have on XBOX360 too, and finally ended as an XBOX360 exclusive? Haha wow.

Klarden' words put me a little at ease, because frankly the original post along with the long development makes me think it's Too Human all over again. I want this game to be rock, but frankly every time i hear some news about it it's like one more nail in the coffin.

Hey look, yet again Jim is trying his best to get views, and of course it is working. I bet he even KNOWS he is leaving out details. Here's the rest of the story: They know how this game will end, but they don't know how the series as a whole will end yet. Wow, was that so hard to admit, instead of trollin'?

Didn't Bioshock come up with "that scene" like a few months before it finished development? Just saying, this might not be a total disaster.

As already mentioned, they've come up with the ending to 'Season 1', just not the overall arc. No, it doesn't turn out that it's all a dream, as stated on many posts scattered throughout the official forums. Also, Sam Lake said in another interview that the game is finished and they're concentrating on polishing up.

Did you read the quotes? I would say that this seems to be in reference to the first game: "We really feel there needs to be a satisfying conclusion," says writer Sam Lake. "But at the same time, it needs to end in kind of a cliffhanger and we need to open doors for a larger story beyond this one." I could be wrong though.

I expected more from Destructoid. i knew random internet tards would misunderstand this but Jim...oh, nm. HAH Seriously, they mean they haven't planned out how the overall series will end, this game is "season 1" and has an ending. Is it that hard to comprehend that?

Yup, because self-contained stories are never good. If you absolutely need a franchise-pusher, why not just make it like the Silent Hill games, where each plot is totally disconnected but has a similar setting and theme?

not actually. i mentioned vista/higher exclusivity for PC release (it was that "halo2 and shadowrun only for vista because everyone apparently wants them so bad!"). they did plan it to be a multiplatform, but weren't sure what platforms will it be released on except for PC. later it was planned as a PC/360/PS3 game. then MS decided to publish the game and eventually it became a 360 exclusive
PC version was supposed to be "superior" in some ways (not surprisingly) and they wanted to take the most of x64, multi-cpu, dx10 or higher combo. Months before it was decided that the game is only for 360 there was a post on the game's blog on how they managed to optimize the game for quad-core users.
And mind you, A.Wake still may be released on PC eventually. No one knows if its timed or permanent exclusivity for 360

If history has taught us anything it's that the best story endings are tacked on at the last second and clearly made to leave room for a sequel.

Well let's be fair - they've only been developing AW for 7 years. I'm sure they'll just write a scrolling epilogue like we had with the S/NES games.
