Reggie Fils-Aime, the ham n' mustard flavored Nintendo of America president is suitably happy with Nintendo's massive success as of late. Unlike other executives in the PR arena, however, the beloved beefburger boss can give credit where it's due and respond to the work of his competition with a touch of class and respect.
Although claiming that he doesn't feel it belongs on the PlayStation 3, Reggie had some good words to say about Sony's upcoming exclusive LittleBigPlanet, claiming to be "very intrigued" by the DIY platformer. NoA's meaty frontman also had some very kind words for Microsoft.
"Microsoft has done well," admitted Sir Reginald. "There are a range of first-person shooter type games that are all very well done that could all do quite well on a Nintendo platform. Certainly, the Halo trilogy - anyone who would look at that and say, "No, I think we could live without it," probably doesn't think real long about this industry." Reggie spoke highly of BioShock too, praising its "tremendously clever" writing and wishing for more products like it in the industry.
It's nice to see a corporate spokesman admitting that he regards some of the competition's property with a touch of envy, especially in an industry where insults and petty gonad-measuring contests are the norm. Of course, it's very easy for a company to be so candid and complimentary when it's on top of the mountain, but it's still far classier than what we've seen anywhere else. Looks like that friendly image doesn't begin and end with the products themselves.
I just cant imagine him with a 360 controller in hand.
Quick someone photoshop it.
Can you say Kiss-Ass?
So how long till the big N starts throwing moneys at bungie and the like?
Wow, Nintendo admits they like money, and want more. What a shocker!
Then he ate a kitten. Because that's what corporate executives do after work. Golf and devouring of cute things.
Awww Regie. He's so cut and cuddly. I like those games too, lets hug!
Little Big Planet could N E V E R run on the wii.
his compliment of Little Big Planet seemed pretty backhanded to me
Not acting like an arrogant ass makes you a better PR person? Man, I would have never though that could be true.
mmm....ham 'n' mustard flavored CEO...
Halo DS will happen
its easy to grin when your ship has come in and you've got the stock market beat. but the man worth his while is the man who can smile, when his pants are too tight in the seat. - judge smails
i could be really cordial about my competition too, if i slept on a matress made of baby chinchillas and thousand dollar bills.
@ corncobtacular
It's like he wanted for his Wii or they could do better.
Ninty would just GAY it all up!
Wait... It is alrea...!
The part when he says LitteBigPlanet "doesn't belong on their platform" is annoyingly arrogant and unkind.
This article makes me want cookies for some reason. And to send Nintendo money. Not even in exchange for anything....
"Of course, it's very easy for a company to be so candid and complimentary when it's on top of the mountain"
I don't think so. It seems to me that it takes effort to keep your head when you are on top. Look at what happened to Nintendo before, and what happened to Sony just recently. They were on top, but it was obviously easy for them to become arrogant, not be cordial.
Reggie: "I don't know that it belongs on their [Sony's] platform[.]"
Maybe he's got a point. When I see brightly colored side-scrolling platformer, I don't think PS3. I also don't know that Manhunt 2 belongs on Nintendo's platform; no platform can be equally popular with every type of player.
Lil big planet does seem out of place on PS3. I'm sure Nintendo is secretly kicking themselves for not securing this title. If I were Nintendo, I would inquire about ecochrome. That game is a title that represent everything the wii is supposed to embody. innovative gameplay. Plus the IR abilities of the wiimote would make ecochrome way more intuitive.
Eh, I'd rather have LBP on the Wii anyway rather than shell out 400+ dollars for the only game on the PS3 thus far that I genuinely want.
Reggie is practically untouchable as far as Sony is concerned, you know with just having posted their billion dollar loss from the PS3 in Business Week. He could feast on baby fetuses while punting kittens and trash-talking and still look good compared to Sony.
I think its nice he said that stuff, but i can understand that it is much easier to say it when you are on top. It would be hard to work for one company and ignore all the great stuff coming from other places in the industry. I dont think I could ever settle on one console!
Whatever, I still dislike his comment about LBP because every system has games that seem to "stick out" when compared to what the perceived use of the system is. There are games that you are surprised to see on Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 - no one wins that battle.
I think that was nice of him.
I agree that it is a nice change of pace when the spokesman isn't immediately on the offensive.
Little Big Planet is certainly a vey interesting and innovative game. I don't care for Halo 3 though.
Nintendo should really consider buying more non-Japanese developers in order to make games that they just don't do. In addition, it would help them put out more games so we are not left waiting with big game droughts. It would be great to have developers make some non-Nintendo based franchise games.
If Sadness actually comes out and is very good, then Nintendo should snatch up Nibris especially since the developer is already devoted to Nintendo platforms. I'd also like Nintendo to absorb Grasshopper Manufacture since it makes stylized mature games (something that rare to see on Nintendo platforms). However, Grasshopper Manufacture would probably prefer to stay independent so it can work on multiple platforms.
Nintendo already has Retro Studios and owns a part of Monolith Soft.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the beloved beefburger boss is actually on his business card.
@ Hiltz
Nibris has not yet released a game so the hope surrounding their properties is actually just hype. It just gets old. Now, speaking about developers that have my respect, Grasshopper would be a nice acquisition. It would be nice if they could get Silicon Knights to work on an Eternal Darkness sequel, but Dyack and company are focused on the Xbox 360 (Too Human Trilogy) now so it is unlikely.
Wait? He wants Halo or something like it on his platform? Wasn't he complaining that there was nothing new about it?
Really this is just marketing double speak. I'm sure reggie couldn't give two piles of cow dung about LBP or Halo. He would like the fans that come along with those properties.
It boils down to this, he'd like to see some more "hardcore" gamers on the wii and something creative to catch more casual gamers. Halo increased system sales for Xbox, he would also like to have a game increase the Wii sales. He believes LBP is an interesting direction for PS3, maybe even a system selling.
What I think the Wii needs is a Pokemon MMO. Instead of moving hardcore gamers, breed some new ones. The Wii next year really needs a ground breaking GOTY games next year like 360 has for this year.
Pokemon MMO ftw.
Thanks for giving some cred reggie.
My cynical ass tends to think that Reggie is just flapping his lips to make the video game people go "d'awwwwww".
PR talk is PR talk, no matter how you cut it. By being congenial, he's actively trying to make it seem like everyone else is being hostile but the Big N. It's bullshit, and I hate it worse than someone who bashes the competition.
Except Halo. I think he actually likes Halo.
@ian_esq
I hope you're kidding. It's not going to happen.
Yeah LBP isn't on the right platform. With its beautiful graphics, robust online level sharing and community aspects I'm sure the hard drive-less Wii is a way more suitable for creating your own levels and uploading them for other to enjoy.
Seriously this game would be ass on the Wii.
(@ Taicho) word!
WTF does 'Reggie Fils-Aime, the ham n' mustard flavored' comment have to do with anything? It's more confusing than funny.
Hmm. Okay.
Jim Sterling writes an article that's negative toward Nintendo and the Wii haters come out of the woodwork to bash the company and its system.
Jim Sterling writes an article that's positive toward Nintendo and the Wii haters come out of the woodwork to bash the company and its system.
Strangely, I don't think the problem here lies with Jim. Do you?
I agree with him actually on Little Big Planet, that game is far too good for the PS3. They should put it on the XBox 360 or the Wii.
Halo, eh, I don't so much about since I always felt the series was simply overrated and mediocre. Might be more fun though playing with a Wiimote though, but still it wouldn't help much.
Oh man I love Nintendo. They are all so kind.
Hate those arrogant Nintendo b******!
Wasn't Perrin Kaplan just saying how they didn't need Bungie or Halo?
Sure Nintendo's current Wii strategy greatly annoys me, but I still have always found Reggie to be an awesome guy.
@Taicho
That's funny, I thought that's exactly what Brawl Was doing.
Huh.
Reggie says something and people are divided about it. Somehow I'm not surprised.
huh? all i've been hearing is that the PS3 sucks because there's no good games on it and here's people saying that LBP is too good for PS3? this new logic is astounding. and saying that the brawl levels will be even comparable to LBP levels in size or complexity is crazy. thats like the difference between heating up ravioli and making a lasagna from scratch. buy a PS3 if you wanna play the game, just like the thousands who bought a 360 just for halo3, its not that hard.
