Reggie wants a GTA on the Wii photo

Before that E3 Nintendo backlash for abandoning the “core” gamer really started rolling, MTVMultiplayer had a sit-down with NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime to talk about Grand Theft Auto on the DS platform. Towards the end of the interview, Reggie comments on the possibility of having a GTA on the Wii, and even seems open to the prospect. His candor is a bit surprising to behold.

You know, a GTA on the Wii is all based on what Rockstsar and Take Two want to do. And again, from our standpoint, if they build a bottoms-up game that takes advantage of what we do well, I’d love to see it on the platform.

The natural follow-up to the above statement was a question regarding if any conversations with Rockstar or Take Two about a Wii-specific GTA had taken place. Reggie firmly declined that he ever talked about the prospect to either the publisher or developer of the franchise. Even if Reggie declined talking to his friends at Rockstar about a Wii GTA, he sounded pretty open to the idea on the platform. Perhaps Nintendo has yet to abandon hardcore players. Next year’s Nintendo press conference at E3 may be all about GTA or Link as a sociopath.

Look I own a Wii but come on..we all know that engine can't run on it.

I played through Bully on Wii and thought it was pretty awesome, albeit sometimes hard to control. I think the Wii could totally pull off a good GTA game. An RE4-style aiming system would be better than Bully's extremely tacked-on feeling aiming though.

I'll pass, but thanks. I'll just play GTA on a real console.

I'm confused. The Wii is a real console. I've seen it and played games on i--- ooooohh, I see what you did there. Clever!

The Wii must not be a real console because it doesn't cost 400 dollars!

Manhunt 2 was released on the Wii so I can't see any reason why a GTA game shouldn't be on it.

Shit GTA4 was blurry on my PS3. I can't imagine how fuck up the graphics would look on a Wii.

I won't even comment on the "real console" thing. Really doesn't even need to be commented.

Dear Reggie, sales of games like RE4Wii should have already told you we Wii owners want more mature games. I don't really care about GTA IV but if you can have R* develop a GTA game for the Wii would be a good sign in our direction.
So, do something really spectacular, and I could even forgive you for not having informed 3rd parties about the motion plus in the right time.

The Godfather was pretty fun with the WIi controls, although graphically limited. Perhaps a cell shaded GTA is the way to go?

I really wish Rockstar would branch out a bit and use their engine for something different next time.. perhaps GTA: Sherwood Forest?

Scarface actually was a pretty damn good game on the Wii, with a large amount of people and vechicles on the road., detail, and the aiming feature was sweet as hell.

This is funny to me because just a few years ago Nintendo stated a GTA game would never make an appearance on one of their consoles because "Mario doesn't shoot hookers" or something dumb like that. Oh how the tides have turned.

So basically, Reggie just made a blanket comment. It means nothing. He doesn't even have a game to announce. Just like Cammie, Reggie, you're two in the same.

You know, I'd like to see what Duke Nukem Forever will look like, but as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't even exist as of yet. Same with GTA Wii, the next Mario and the next Zelda.

Even if Rockstar started a GTA exclusive Wii since finishing FTA IV, we won't see anything until at least the end of 2010. Thanks, Reggie, I already beat GTA IV on my PS3 like a month ago.

Oh yeah, Capcom, I already beat Dead Rising on my friends' 360 a year ago, too, so I'm not holding my breath for Dead Rising Wii.

It seems like some people here have forgotten that there's been several GTA games for last-gen consoles, and those games where ok?

San Andreas was mostly engineered to be played on the PS2. The Wii is over 3 times more powerful than that, so if Rockstar manages to squeeze some hardware juice out of the system, then they could make decent looking GTA game with lots of NPC's in it and such.

Godfather for the Wii was really fun and Violent. So I guess GTA on the Wii would be good. As long as I can still choke a bastard out, I will be happy. But If I have to choose, I will still probably only buy it for the PS3

But still, did any of the Mature games on the wii met succes ? Don't think so. Developing a brand new title wii exclusive will probably make R* loose money. If wii will get a GTA exclusive game I think it will pe San Andreas stories.

I wouldn't mind seeing a GTA game on the wii. Nothing like the GTAIV that we all know and love, but maybe something similar to what they did with Vice City and San Andreas. How cool would a GTA set in the mid 70's be? They've already hit the 60's, 80's and 90's, it would seem like a pretty logical step to me.

To all of you bright crayons pointing out the Wii's incapabilities, remember that there were GTA games before GTA4 came out. GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas were all on PS2, which is LESS powerful than the Wii. It's kind of funny how people are associating the Wii's graphics capabilities with that of the PSone, when the Wii is actually capable of pumping some pretty nice graphics. Super Mario Galaxy was beautiful, regardless of its resolution.

A GTA on Wii could be a lot of fun if Rockstar adds in a lot of side missions and minigames like in Bully. If there's one thing the Wii is great at, it's minigames.

@ B-Radicate: They never said GTA wouldn't come to a Nintendo system, just that they wouldn't have M rated titles with the Mario character. That'd be like Disney putting out a Doom III clone staring Mickey as the space marine. Mascot does not equal entire platform.

I seriously don't get you people sometimes.

Everyone always complains that the Wii is too "casual," and that there aren't enough "real" games. Reggie expresses interest in GTA for the Wii, and what do you do? You say that you don't want it, it would never work, etc., etc. What's the problem here?

I'm not even a GTA fan and even I'm excited about this idea. And for the record, they never said 4 would be on the Wii, so you don't have to worry about that engine or whatever. They just said a GTA game. I think it'd be awesome on there.
