Before that E3 Nintendo backlash for abandoning the “core” gamer really started rolling, MTVMultiplayer had a sit-down with NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime to talk about Grand Theft Auto on the DS platform. Towards the end of the interview, Reggie comments on the possibility of having a GTA on the Wii, and even seems open to the prospect. His candor is a bit surprising to behold.
You know, a GTA on the Wii is all based on what Rockstsar and Take Two want to do. And again, from our standpoint, if they build a bottoms-up game that takes advantage of what we do well, I’d love to see it on the platform.
The natural follow-up to the above statement was a question regarding if any conversations with Rockstar or Take Two about a Wii-specific
GTA had taken place. Reggie firmly declined that he ever talked about the prospect to either the publisher or developer of the franchise. Even if Reggie declined talking to his friends at Rockstar about a Wii
GTA, he sounded pretty open to the idea on the platform. Perhaps Nintendo has yet to abandon hardcore players. Next year’s Nintendo press conference at E3 may be all about
GTA or Link as a sociopath.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
"Go play Wii Sport Resort."
I'm confused. The Wii is a real console. I've seen it and played games on i--- ooooohh, I see what you did there. Clever!
The Wii must not be a real console because it doesn't cost 400 dollars!
Dear Reggie, sales of games like RE4Wii should have already told you we Wii owners want more mature games. I don't really care about GTA IV but if you can have R* develop a GTA game for the Wii would be a good sign in our direction.
So, do something really spectacular, and I could even forgive you for not having informed 3rd parties about the motion plus in the right time.
I really wish Rockstar would branch out a bit and use their engine for something different next time.. perhaps GTA: Sherwood Forest?
Read: Release the crappy minigames from GTA4 with waggle.
It may not be as pretty as the xbox or pstriple, but it can handle the fucking engine.
LOL.
Thanks for tuning in.
You know, I'd like to see what Duke Nukem Forever will look like, but as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't even exist as of yet. Same with GTA Wii, the next Mario and the next Zelda.
Even if Rockstar started a GTA exclusive Wii since finishing FTA IV, we won't see anything until at least the end of 2010. Thanks, Reggie, I already beat GTA IV on my PS3 like a month ago.
Oh yeah, Capcom, I already beat Dead Rising on my friends' 360 a year ago, too, so I'm not holding my breath for Dead Rising Wii.
That said, they won't do it right.
San Andreas was mostly engineered to be played on the PS2. The Wii is over 3 times more powerful than that, so if Rockstar manages to squeeze some hardware juice out of the system, then they could make decent looking GTA game with lots of NPC's in it and such.
A GTA on Wii could be a lot of fun if Rockstar adds in a lot of side missions and minigames like in Bully. If there's one thing the Wii is great at, it's minigames.
Everyone always complains that the Wii is too "casual," and that there aren't enough "real" games. Reggie expresses interest in GTA for the Wii, and what do you do? You say that you don't want it, it would never work, etc., etc. What's the problem here?
I'm not even a GTA fan and even I'm excited about this idea. And for the record, they never said 4 would be on the Wii, so you don't have to worry about that engine or whatever. They just said a GTA game. I think it'd be awesome on there.
Ha, I didn't even think of that! I swear, that'd get me into the GTA franchise if we could do that.
