Reggie still listens to Nintendo fans, still tastes great with mustard photo

It's been a while since we had a patronizing statement aimed at "core" gamers from Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils Aime, but the meaty executive has come out in full force with another round of statements aimed at calming the old school Nintendo fanbase.

"We listen to our fans all the time," claimed the savory boss. "Nintendo fans are some of the most passionate in the world, and believe me, they make their opinions heard. We're not claiming our way of doing things is better or worse than anyone else - it's just different.

"We listen very closely to what people have to say, both pro and con, and keep those feelings in mind as we plan ahead."

I am certain Reggie does listen to the fans ... and bellows with beefy laughter until his porkchop teeth rattle whenever he does.

Oh. A meat joke. How unexpected.

Also, I wish Nintendo would cut the BS. They changed their target audience, and I've accepted. Stop trying to pretend you're company is something that its not.

I treat Nintendo like this: Just like a casual game comes out every so often on the PS3 or 360, every so often something will come out on the Wii that'll interest a 'core' gamer. Personally, I'm waiting for Mad World and No More Heroes 2. If I want something with substance, that's what I got a PS3 for.

New Starfox and F-Zero then please.
And while I'm at it, fund a River City Ransom sequel. Oh and Pilotwings. And a 2D Metroid on wiiware or DS. Also, make another RPG with square. I could go on.

This isn't Nintendo-specific, but I found it absolutely fascinating that we completely throw away quotes from PR and administrative figures and replace them with whatever we want to hear or whatever we think they are really saying. Perhaps we shouldn't post interviews anymore. Maybe Destructoid should just post up pics of Reggie, Howard Stringer, and other big wigs and just play Mad Libs.

Jeez, this guy can start his own manure processing facility, and those questions were weak.

First off, his statement about the division between Nintendo Japan and Nintendo of America are complete BS. There is no reason whatsoever why we shouldn't be able to just import games from Japan. Hell, Japan also uses NTSC, so it's not like it's an NSTC/PAL issue! The only reason why we can't get some Japanese games here is because Reggie doesn't have absolute control over them. Get rid of the region locking on the Wii, and he'll never have to be bothered about the Nintendo/NOA issue again.

And where's the question about a real, external storage unit like a hard drive? With WiiWare and games like "GH:WT" and "RB2" supporting DLC, an SD card that can't even be accessed in-game, is simply not satisfactory.

I'm with Drach. This guy just can't be trusted.

@John B

The SD card can be accessed in-game in World Tour and Rock Band 2. Songs can be played right off the cards.

Okay, my bad. I misinterpreted the instructions in the GH:WT manual. (Just checked.) That's cool. Hey, I'll admit that I goofed on that one.

But it would still be better to have a hard drive. ;)

haha, lamest interview ever. Two chestnuts:

"In addition, the Wii version of Animal Crossing: City Folk has more than 2,400 different items to collect."

Oooooh! What I've always wanted! YAY FOR COLLECTING STUFF!

"...as you know, we recently launched Club Nintendo here in North America to reward our fans for their loyalty. I know everyone here always envied Japan and Europe fans for the cool Nintendo items they had, and now we're getting some of our own."

Dear lord...did he actually say that? Club Nintendo is absolute garbage. I was only partially interested, and then it turned out that the points I had registered and thought were safe 'expired' a while ago. Total BS.

The guy is in dreamland, I can't wait til he comes crashing back down to Earth.

People who say Nintendo has changed its target audience are morons. What Nintendo is doing is catering to both sides. However, They're main goal is to hopefully get both sides to enjoy the same games. A task that has its share of obstacles, starting with trying to break down the barrier that separates "hardcore" from "casual" for lack of better terms.

If Nintendo has "abandoned" the hardcore gamer, then why did it release the epic and innovative Mario Galaxy, the impressive FPS controls of Metroid Prime 3 or the fun bikes and smooth online play of Mario Kart ? What about the massive content and additional fan service in Smash Bros. Brawl Or he good use of Wii controls in Zelda:TP (except for the standard sword attack) or the cleverness of Super Paper Mario and what about the announcements of cult favorite sequels to Sin & Punishment and Punch-Out coming out later this year ? What about the GameCube ports of certain franchises like Pikmin and Metroid Prime that some fans wished for ? What about the early confirmation of new Pikmin, Zelda and Mario games in the works and the exciting new MotionPlus peripheral ? In addition, We don't know yet what new projects Retro Studios, Monster Games and Monolith Soft are working on next. What about Club Nintendo finally coming out in North America ?

You really cannot say that Nintendo has forgotten about their loyal fans when you look at all of the facts.

Nintendo's got its share of issues, but of course so do Microsoft and Sony. There's the Wii's lack of storage space and a generally weak online service and a lack of third-party multi-platform support and how Wiiware is being overwhelmed with shovelware titles and how the Wii doesn't have much in the way of AAA third-party titles. Also, titles like Disaster have yet to come out in North America and Wii Music was a dud and Animal Crossing was a fairly lazy rehash title or how third-parties have been largely focused on offering only party games.

Fortunately, 2009's starting off with an impressive amount of good quality third-party support leading the pack through out the year and Nintendo may announce some surprising new titles later on. There's more hardcore and mature titles coming out than ever before with more planned for next year too (like No More Heroes 2) and MotionPlus is going to improve upon the responsiveness of the Wii remote controller's capabilities and offer further untapped potential that is sure to capture the interest of more developers. 2009 has what it takes to be one of the Wii's best years for gaming but I'm not going to say that it will not have its share of disappointments as well(which happens every year on every platform).

I could go on but you get the picture by now.

The point is, Nintendo has to find a balance between the games they offer and how many titles they can release and which ones will appeal to the hardcore, casual, expanded audience or some or all of them. They've got to try and satisfy all of their customers but the truth is that they'll always make some mistakes along the way. However,Nintendo has done more good than bad for this generation in my opinion. It has helped open the industry's eyes especially when the hardcore market has been shrinking and development costs have skyrocketed and the obsession of better graphics and more horse power will make games more fun. Nintendo took a different approach by using innovation, creativity and accessibility to explore new ways of gaming via controls and make software that no one else has made that generally appeals to all age groups. As a business, Nintendo hasn't seen this level of success in years and it caught everyone off guard, including Nintendo itself.

^ Fanboy much?

Nintendo is cashing in on hype and hype alone. Their best games are always Mario (zzzzz), Zelda (stupid ass princess), and Metroid (cool game) with a few other titles thrown in here and there that are solid (usually PS2/GC ports). Most 3rd party support = developers wiping their behinds with a disc and mass producing it.

As a lifelong gamer, my opinion of Nintendo in it's current form is not a good one. $129 is a more legitimate price for their hardware as well. No way I'll spend $249 on a Wii...not that they need me to, but I won't do it either.

I'm a Nintendo fan. Not a fanboy. There's a difference. I don't support Nintendo when it makes dumb mistakes or disappoints me as a gamer so don't foolishly accuse me of being one especially when I didn't blindly praise Nintendo in my previous comment since I listed some of the issues I and many other Wii owners have with Nintendo's strategy.

Nintendo's classic franchises are obviously the bread and butter of its company. Those are the fundamental titles that always sell millions. I admit that I'd like to see Nintendo offer actual new IPs beyond the "Wii Brand" games like how it did during the GameCube years with Animal Crossing, Pikmin and Metroid Prime or even spin-offs like Luigi's Mansion. For whatever the reason, Nintendo has decided to be one of the few developers who rarely offers new full-fledged hardcore IPs. Fortunately, it has developers like Retro Studios who appear to be given more freedom to do the kinds of games that Nintendo's internal Japanese development teams just don't make.

The way I see it, this whole console war of which console is superior is stupid. It's really just a bragging contest and a way to easily insult a competitor's decisions and make fun of its userbase.

What is really comes down to is personal preference. What console's features and games appeal to you? Does the console meet your gaming needs ? If not, then it's just not the platform right for you. Fortunately, gamers who can afford to own more than 1 platform are able to enjoy the benefits that different consoles offer in terms of exclusive titles and console features.

You've got to give them some credit. If they weren't listening to fans, then what the hell is all this shit about Sin & Punishment 2? They certainly wouldn't make a new S&P on the grounds that it would yield massive profits.

There's only so much they can do, I guess.
